On The Money - Roma Cup 18th May
It could be a sign of things to come, but the money on course at Belmont was ordinary for the second week in a row, despite Perth Racing hosting one of its biggest days of the Belmont season.
Race 1:
Much like the previous week where impressive last start winner Vital Importance, was the big drifter, Ignition won again and was unwanted in the betting ring ($4.80 to $8). Mountain Haze was crunched from $2.30 to $1.70 but could only manage the minor placing. Nothing else to report in the first.
Race 2:
Cyber Crime has been a costly conveyance to punters over a number of years and they let him go completely ($8 - $12) and he punished them for their lack of loyalty! Light That Smile was specked from $51 in early markets to $19 in the ring and took out some nice each way bets. Monumental, Black Moment and the short priced favourite Raising Dubai, all had their friends and were steady. Ready on Time was a drifter out to $9 before late suppori back into $6. Rasing Dubai looked to have every chance and just when you thought Cyber Crime would turn it up again, he put his head out and won at juicy odds.
Race 3:
The best horse in the race was always Its a Bit Shady but the smarties let him go, drifting from $2.60 to $3. Futurism $7.50 to $6 and Elle On Friar ($12 to $10) were the ones they seemed to fancy to beat him, but once Fish took him to the front, it was all over.
Race 4:
It was a massive go on Arctic Ocean, which was surprising given the barrier and opposition ($8 - $4.60). Perhaps it was just blind faith in William Pike, but it didn't come off. Stay Lady Stay $4.40 to $5, Ziva Star $5.50 -$6 and Resetgold $5.50 to $10 were the drifters. Eventual winner, Black Magic Miss was steady $5 - $5.50 - $4.80. Dual City remained steady at $8 and $9 throughout.
Race 5:
We were all crowing McBlitzam as the roughie to back in the fifth and it seems we were not the only ones ($41 - $21). He ran a much better race allowed to run along in front, but perhaps the blinkers just overcooked him a little. Razed in Flames was the short priced favourite and was smashed in from $3.70 to $2.50 in a decent crush. Burj Khalifa was also strong with $51 bet in pre-post markets, the best price at jump was $18. The Blues saved the bookies to a degree, drifting from $6 to $7.50. The Cavalieri was steady at about $8 throughout while Galaxy Prince eased from $5 to $7. Razed in Flames disappointed to finish fourth.
Race 6:
The only one they wanted was Power Princess. She was $2.15 in prepost markets, into evens and then heavy support saw her tighten to odds on at jump. Ranger was unwanted, wobbling from $4.60 to $6. Cavallo Pazzo got to massive odds of $13 before good support late back into $8.50 and likewise, Kerrific out to $12 and back into $9. Playing God was virtually friendless ($9 - $12). The specking for Waratah's Secret ($31 - $21) indicated he might go a little better, and he did. The bookies result missed narrowly in Ranger, but the best horse won this year's Roma Cup.
Race 7:
It was a wide open affair in the Skyracing Provincial Final but it wasnt too difficult to find the leader, Nova Joe, and they backed him accordingly ($7.50 - $5.50). That move was overshadowed however by a plunge on the Greg Kersley trained You Say So, a noted non winner! They belted him at Northam and they belted him again from $4.60 to $3.20. Kalarena was specked from $14 to $10 and Madam Jewel, as a result, eased from $5.50 to $8 before some late support back to $6. Kevin Bohorun is really starting to make and impression with his front running style and is suited perfectly to a horse like Nova Joe. You Say So, once again, disappointed.
Race 8:
There seemed a bit of pace on paper in the last and when Beltane was crashed off the boards from $11 to $7, along with Catlantic from $51 to $21, one could be excused for thining they were going to control the tempo up front. Add to that, Iseethingsyoudont was an alarming drifter from $3.40 to $4, Full Steam Ahead ($5.50 - $7.50) was underdone according to the trainer and Rantorini ($14 - $20) was friendless. The one they wanted, again from a wide barrier and against better horses, was Accrual ($5.50 - $7 - $4.80). It was some sort of move against horses with the class of Iseethingsyoudont, Rantorini and Full Steam Ahead. The race was soon decided when ISTYD strolled to the front, ran the first 600m in a pedestrian 37.9 secs and gave them windburn with a 33.84 second final section. The bookies were really let off the hook in the last.

Personally I think its pretty Harsh to say that Raised in flames was dissapointing. I know he won his first 2 starts in WA in convincing enough fashion BUT it was a rise in class from a Class 1 race to a 60+ Saturday field. Plus he drew barrier 12 of 12 which ...

Thanks for bringing this back. I find it extremely informative and a possible lead to future winners. I hope you find the time to provide this on a weekly basis. :x :x
