Weekend Review - 4th May

Matt Rigby | Weekend Review | Mon 6 May, 2013

Race 1:

Jest Envy her was the impressive trialer and opened up very short in the market but drifted quite dramatically and it was obvious all was not right. She held the inside rail but was headed by Ignition who was just too good and saluted at huge odds. Cool Trade was the run of the race, sitting wide without cover and going down narrowly. Jest Envy Her the disappointment of the race.

Horse to follow: Cool Trade.

Race 2:

It wasn't all beer and skittles for the bookies when favourite Hussy By Choice saluted in the second as the $2.50 favourite. She wasn't heavily supported however, as is usually the case with a Simon Miller runner. Baleen in Me was the best backed runner in the race with some late suppport also for Novadarl. Ryan Hill handled Hussy By Choice perfectly however as the speedy Tungsten attempted to unsettle her by dashing to the lead. Hill didnt panic and cruised up to the leader and strongly held off Baleen in Me in the final 50m. The rest were simply outclassed.

Horse to follow: Baleen in Me / Hussy By Choice.

Race 3:

Back to a Walk's previous form had been franked in race 2 when Hussy By Choice saluted. There was no reason why the favourite wouldnt win with a leg in the air and he did just that. It was pretty much a dwadling pace and back to a walk took them apart with his impressive sprint to win with ease. He was well supported in the ring into even money favoruite and has a number of future wins in him one would think. A shining light for Gino Poletti who recently lost Luckygray to the east. Its a Bit Shady finished off nicely considering the slowish pace and is worth following while Stock Trader was disappointing, afforded every chance outside the leader. Dream Merger was injured in running.

Horse to follow: Back to a Walk

Race 4:

My Lovely Lovely caused the second boilover when holding out the heavily backed Black Magic Miss in the fourth. As much as $81 was bet in pre-post markets but the bookies were keeping her much safter at $31. Black Magic Miss ran on stoutly to be denied by a short half head after missing the start slightly. Priceless Cat and Let's Buy Iht both had every chance and were outclassed. Ziva Star was also heavily backed, led and faded to run 4th.

Horse to follow: none.

Race 5:

Moneghetti failed badly in two runs last campaign but had a fresh record good enough to figure in the York Stakes. Consequently, he was backed steadily in from $31 to $21 and the win did not surprise. Blinkers went on Rebelson and once again he let down the punters, failing by just a long head. Miss Tipsy Topsy is Miss Tipsy Topsy and she ran her usual placing without threatening. Red Mercedes was the other one they  wanted in the ring but failed to flatter.  Amelia's Dancer had no luck, having to tramp wide and Global Flirt was ordinary.

Horse to follow: none

Race 6:

The money in the fifth indicated that Operational would put his two previous poor runs behind him and improve to be the one to beat in the staying event. That was how it eventuated. The inexperienced Jerry Noske found herself in traffic on the favourite Daneclicked and Staeck rode a polished race on Fred Kersley's more than handy stayer. They zipped along in a tick over 2.08 for the 2000m with the leader falling in a hole. The Litigator ran in well despite over racing for most of the trip and Cyber Crime was ordinary. Daneclicked was the unlucky runner, not getting out until Staeck was well and truly gone.

Horse to follow: none

Race 7:

Times are Changing was the best backed runner in the seventh and it panned out nicely for the front runner as Painted, drawn 1, slipped badly and almost fell at the start. Times are Changing and Darci Time slipped away from the remainder of the field, who were all going to struggle with the way the race was run thereafter. They finished 1,2,3 in order of running with only The Widder and World Domination able to make any ground.  Jaja Saab was the disappointing favourite with a superb first up record. He went ordinary for his new trainer.

Horse to follow: The Widder / World Domination

Race 8:

The last was a wide open betting affair with best backed runner Accrual missing by a neck to Let's Lighten Up. Red Hot Sax was forced to work wide without cover from her barrier while Accrual and Lets LIghten Up both got the cover they needed to figure in the finish. They were lengths better than their rivals on the day.  Beltane led and gave it away first up with Red Hot Sax toughing it out to run third. McBlitzam pulled his head off the entire journey and finished near the rear. Don't give up on him, they'll allow him to run soon enough and he can return to form.

Horse to follow: Red Hot Sax.
