Cracking day of racing, a good track is anticipated and the main race is a small but select group of quality gallopers and should be a ripper although Haggas is already playing the "dry track won't suit us very well" card, guess what Will ole boy wet or dry the great mare was likely going to beat you anyway :D fascinated to see how Mo'unga measures up there are 4 top line older horses he faces but i think he can give them a fright with his turn of foot.VE for me she is simply "the best" in my eyes.

Looking forward to Amarelinha's Australian debut she has to go up a level but is more than capable and also get's her preferred dry conditions, another kiwi Entriviere also debuts but has drawn can run real well though with luck.Richards has some serious horse flesh come through their stable as Avantage is going for G1 number 9 at Te Rapa saturday also.

Another "handy" mare again his looks a deadset banker in the mares race, once again conditions suit perfectly for Probabeel who looks unbeatable to me bar bad luck.

Finally my fav filly Isotope takes on September Run(whose lustre has dulled a bit on that Newmarket run)will be a good guide where this ripper girl fits in the up and comers pecking order i think she will go very close with SR the obvious hurdle to overcome.

As i said a great day of racing, probably have even missed one or two i'm looking forward to seeing run. Will be enjoying a frothy or 5 in Gero town(think the pubs are all still standing)particularly can't wait for the QE.

Horses like Mugatoo and Avilius only get 3.5kg more than a 3yo on Aegon, whole Mounga gets 49.5kg as a 3yo colt the same as a 3yo filly in Forbidden Love.

Noticed this galloper has been transferred from Waller to a new/rookie trainer Annabelle Neasham, is owned by Aquis and have just read an article from last spring where it states "we will be supporting her heavily" as she kicks off her own training gig..no ****! has i dare say been given some fairly good gallopers to kick off with in this bloke and Prague is another i noted and who resumed with a nice close up 3rd last Saturday.

Annabelle whose name i have seen around but know not much about is from the UK i believe.Bit of digging tells me she worked for Gai in 2016 on a working holiday and never left, subsequntly ran The Maher/Eustace's Sydney operation from 2018 and with considerable success too until kicking off in her own right in August last year, so far has had 13 winners from 61 runners at 21%.

Mo'unga is dual nominated for Sydney and Melbourne this saturday last time i looked and is great odds particularly for the flemington race which i think he could win first up, do not know if he is there or in Sydney though.

Has accepted for The Apollo in Sydney also a notably bigger test but the wraps were big for him too.Interesting to watch how he goes...and Annabelle too

She has started well and i think she is VERY highly rated.Smart move would be to "sign up" Tommy Marquand for rides wherever possible(he lobs there this week i believe and will be ready too ride on the 27th Feb),i could see them forging an alliance of sorts for his time here and he used to ride Prague and maybe others for Aquis anyway.

Fair bit of water to pass under the bridge with the race 5 weeks away but i think the concept is a beauty and probably better or at least as good as the Everest albeit for far less prizemoney. My knock if any is the venue this year being Moonee Valley but as it's mainly high quality gallopers that will compete the cream should rise to the top.

I reckon i saw the winner of the race too yesterday at Caulfield her name is Probabeel.
Raced wide the trip first up with 60 yet still had a terrific turn of foot and won very soft showing she is well and truly back, is last years Epsom winner who handles all conditions and has run really well before at the Valley in a Cox Plate.Melody Belle isn't coming so she WILL get a spot and probably would have anyway so there are no worries there.
Arcadia Queen looks the main danger also having had a sighter at the track and we know how strong she is, personally am not a massive fan of Russian Camelot at 1600 in top company.
So that's my early take on the race..pretty bullish too all things being equal.

Very good chance both tracks will be in the good range for Saturday @Flemington the rail is out 5m and Randwick 3 should both play fair and there are some terrific races and good bets evident?
Who likes what in the Newmarket and Australian Cup which looks a very open race?

At Randwick the race I most want to watch is the Guineas plus Bivouac and co in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes.

Not fully screwed in to an Australian Cup tip as yet but in the Newmarket if September Run gets even luck she just wins on her late splits in the Lightning and her outstanding straight track record.

In Sydney in the Guineas I think Mo'unga is a star in waiting, firmly believe he is a big chance to beat the fav..blinkers going on first time could be the real X factor for him to unleash.
6 other runners who finished fairly well beaten behind Aegon line up again and Peltzer is maybe the only one who could turn it around mainly because he grows a leg at Randwick(5/5)..a decent negative though is he has gate 13.
So this may sound a bit ambitious but the race is in my opinion a 2 horse race, Tommy Berry who is on fire lately just needs clear running as they straighten and if he gets same only Aegon can beat him imo.
At 1600 I'm a bit wary of the kiwi so I'll bet accordingly to still make a tidy profit, the 2.45 boosted the place is still decent enough. If I'm right about how good he potentially is stepping out to 2000 in 2 weeks i think he just wins the Rosehill Guineas and if it's slow to Heavy he could well smash them..so I may avail myself of some of the $7 All in for that race too.

Bivouac can rebound up in trip really suits, it was proven he isn't a 1000m horse but no harm done(thankfully I chickened out).
He has won up to 1400, clearly remember the day when Bowman let the "handy" Yes Yes Yes get a head in front in the Golden Rose then kicked back the last 75 and won.
Should stalk Saviatiano and co(hopefully Boss gets cover)and run over them late.

Having been prevented from travelling to Perth and Adelaide due to restrictions being put in place by their respective Premiers, the wife and I who were desperate for the freedoms that we used to take for granted, decided to travel over the border to NSW.

If you drive there, Gladys doesn't require you to fill out any forms, or didn't when we left Danistan on Tuesday February 9.

By the way, you DO have to apply for a permit to travel back to Victoria. This I did, and as we approached the border yesterday, we expected to be pulled over to have our permits checked. Not a soul was there, so, like every other car and truck we drove straight through.

What was funny, was that someone had painted a large sign and tied it to the post where you cross from NSW into Victoria. The sign said, "enter at own risk" I reckon the wife and I were laughing for a good ten minutes after reading that.

We decided to stay in Wagga for three days, then head on to Newcastle for another 10.

What a relief. Not a mask in sight. People moving freely, and it was the same in Newcastle, with life at almost 100% normal. Just for that alone, it was worth the trip.

Human nature being what it is, you don't realise how much we tend to take our freedoms for granted, until those freedoms are taken away from us.

There was a race meeting at Wagga on the Thursday we were there. And to be perfectly honest with you, it was our reason for going, as, although we had stayed in Wagga a few years ago, we had never been to a race meeting there.

I have to say that for a major NSW country town, the facilities at the Wagga Racecourse, are a disgrace. It looks like they have not improved a thing for the public, since 1850.

This, to me, was remarkable, as they have a beautiful course proper which generally speaking, races very fairly.

The grandstand, if you can call it that, is held up by cotton thread and spider webs, I went into the members corporate boxes as the members was open to the public, and they were frankly, in a disgraceful condition.

They run the Wagga Cup carnival in May over two days. Top trainers and jockeys from NSW and Victoria come there and they get between 5,000 and 10,000 people attending. I'll be stuffed if I can work out how they fit them all in. And don't get me started on the condition of the public toilets.

Anyway, we arrived and I had to put my mobile phone camera in line with the NSW contact tracing logo which was placed at the entrance to the track. It took me to their contact tracing web site, and all I had to do was provide my name and wife's name and a phone number. The whole thing was very easy to do, and took about 10 seconds.

We still use parchment, a feather quill, and ink made out of dinosaur blood, here in Danistan, I mean Victoria.

Entry was free for about the 60 people who bothered to attend.

It was a hot day, and I felt for the two bookies there,Terry Coelli and Richard Night and his wife, who had to stand under the hot tin roof of the betting ring which also has not been improved in the last 100 years.

Coelli who I had heard of and read about previously, would be that districts biggest bookie and has been for a few years now. He would be around 60. He operated his stand on his own. Richard Night who I hadn't heard of before, operated his stand, with his wife on the computer. They would both be in their late 60's.

You could have a reasonable bet with the two of them, although it must be noted that at all these meetings and around Australia, the bookies have Betfair available, so why wouldn't you bet someone 100/each way on a $26.00 chance, which happened, when you can back it back at 40's on Betfair.

I wouldn't go back there again, and any thoughts that I have had in the past about going to their carnival, have been well and truly flushed down one of their disgraceful dunny's.

From Wagga we travelled on to Newcastle. We arrived on the Friday, and the Saturday race meeting happened to be at Gosford.

It was a cold wet day, but it's only about 40 Kilometres up the highway, and we decided to go.

They have brought in a law in NSW, that no matter what age you are, you have to pay full admission to get in. It was $20.00, yes, that's right, $20.00 for an adult to get in, and as I was told by the person at the gate, anyone over 12 months old had to pay full price. Yet another reason for people not to go to the track.

The facilities there are great. A fully enclosed large area under the grandstand, with heating and cooling as required. Excellent food on sale, and completely glassed in on one side. It's pretty noisy, and quite a few young blokes there having 1.00 each way on the tote, I actually saw them having their bets, and yelling their guts out and high fiving, each other when they backed a winner. I've known a few blokes in my time who can drink, but those young blokes would drink them under the table.

The bookies ring was at the entrance to the area where we were. There were three of them. Grant Lynch, Phill Maher, and Allan Hinks. Why they weren't put inside and opposite the tote, whose operators were in total comfort, is beyond me. Well, it actually isn't.

It was a prime example as to how much bookmakers have become irrelevant to race clubs and the racing powers that be, despite some officials claiming how they add "colour and excitement to a day at the races"

I'd heard of Lynch and Maher, and, as per Wagga, you could have a decent bet with all three bookies. Hinks and Maher would be in their 60's, whereas Lynch, who I did speak to and is a very nice bloke, would be a spring chicken compared to them, being, in my estimation, in his 40's.

There was supposed to be three meetings in one week at Newcastle, but due to wet weather and overuse of the track, they transferred the Monday meeting to Musswelbrook. I didn't fancy a two hour trip up and back the New England highway, so I spent the day with she who must be obeyed joining her in her favourite pursuit, of visiting shopping centres.

Over the years,we have visited Perth, we have been to every shopping centre there at least 5 times. As long as the missus is happy, so am I. I reckon that not one member here, can boast such a record!!

We went to Newcastle races on the Thursday and last Saturday. It was free entry on Thursday and full use of a very nice members area. No more than 40 people, and one bookie, Grant Lynch who told me "I'm taking one for the team". On Saturday, it was full fee entry, but at least 1,500 people if not more, were there. A lot of young people. But the highlight for me was watching the young women trying to fit themselves into their tight fitting dresses which left nothing to the imagination. That alone, was worth the price of admission. The missus said I could look at the menu, as long as I didn't touch the food.

The facilities are very good, with about 120 tables and chairs set out in what used to be a huge betting ring, under the grandstand. 50 of those were reserved for pre bookings, but the missus and I had no trouble in getting a table. There are only two bookies working at Newcastle on a Saturday, Maher and Lynch. they have four boards up, as they did at Gosford, and bet on all meetings.

I remarked to Lynch how I had been there about 7 years ago, and there were 7 bookies. He told me that one had passed away and the others have turned it up. But he added, that he was happy with there being "no competition".

We were all set to go up the highway to Taree on Sunday where there was going to be a heat of the Country Championship, but it was rained out and the meeting transferred to Scone, a further half hour away.

Overall, we had a great time, relaxing, and breathing in a lot of fresh air. The races were what I had expected them to be, from a punting and bookmaking point of view. Some may disagree, but I reckon that the on course bookies and I will see each other out, and that at least for next 5-10 years, we should have a bookie or two at most tracks.

The older ones in their 60's and 70's love the caper,so they will only give it away when their health prevents them going. So it was with Jack Ashman a doyen of the bookmaking fraternity in NSW and a fixture at Newcastle for 50 years, who gave it away only a year or two before he died in his late 80'sor early 90's. Going to the track kept him, as it does others alive.

The days of old with rows of bookies, thousands of punters, and plenty of cash changing hands are gone. Our Grandchildren will never experience what we have. Unfortunately, the races have become a victim of the technology that they have embraced. from encouraging people to congregate in Tab's to phone betting accounts,to Sky Channel, the list goes on.

So, if, like me and the wife, you enjoy going to the track and betting with a bookie, and, like us, you have a bucket list of tracks you want to visit, do it while you still can and there is a bookie on track left to bet with.

The atmosphere isn't anywhere near the same, but like us, you may still get some pleasure in breathing in that little bit of atmosphere that is left.

Thoughts??

Noticed Jum has posted a BB entry for Enthaar assume he may be sticking up for her?.
Not entirely useful information because i dont recall who the bloody trainer was but there was a query put forward about her getting a strong 1200m? Idk but he suggested the gear she wears is of interest especially wearing same in that 1000m race which she won very well.Maher didnt sound super convinced as i recall either..but i guess most aren't super bullish in what is usually a high pressure race for these babies.

Not a huge knock but at 2.25 currently and second up into the big one having never gone beyond 1000m i'm quite wary, plus getting burnt by Hanseatic last year who looked a better thing imo has me fairly convinced to look elsewhere.
I have my eye on General Beau, liked his win back to the inside in the BD preview he was strong late on maybe inferior ground that day and i will be watching closely how he fairs in the Prelude up to 1100.He is not nommed but they will do so if he wins i'm sure, dont know whether i will have an all in spec at the $10 on offer now or not but his quote maybe halves if he wins..

Profiteer is a watch too but they have gone to Sydneyso are they chasing the big bucks, a wet track(or both)then coming back to Melbourne for the Diamond or what? idk really but he would be the other favourable chance if he won up there and came back for the race.

Have only looked at the barrier draw for the Guineas, have never had much interest in the 2yo race a couple at odds in Finance Tycoon and Baby Wong hold a bit of interest..maybe but not sure on that race at all yet.
As it's early in the week i have no knowledege as to the likely track conditions or weather up there..hopefully a good track or just into the soft range at worst.

For the Guineas, the barrier draw has been kind to all the favoured runners, Away Game 3, Forbidden Love 4, Isotope 7(into 6 after scratchings)also is pretty good. The smokey and the one with 1400m form is the underrated Apache Chase who drew 1, he is $14 and worth a punt maybe at those odds or better..has 57 which may have a small impact giving all the females weight.

Bossy is bullish as usual no surprise there but i see Apache Chase probably giving her some serious competition on pace which might be to her detriment as it's her first time at 1400, meanwhile likely sitting just off them smoking the pipe are Isotope and Forbidden Love(who i think may prefer it wet but has plenty of ability)..plus these two are getting 1.5/2 kgs respectively off last years 2yo millions winner.
Away Game's advantage if she has one is she loves the Goldy track, should be a beauty of a race as should the day in general..not the easiest punting day though from memory.

Will be looking out for Paradee and Yao Dash in other races when the all the fields come out..do not know what happened to Exhilarates Cummings didnt nom for the mares race for some reason :(
