Hi all, hope you're well and backing plenty of winners.

We all know that the Melbourne Cup day race card at Flemington is all about one race - the Melbourne Cup, and rightly so. However, what about the other races - the support races or the undercard? The VRC and Racing Victoria has made the effort to boost the support races so that there is more stakes (Group/Listed) races on the card. What stats and historical quirks do the other races on the card at Flemington have? I did some research and was surprised to see how many good horses who have won these races have done afterwards.

Race 1: Listed Maribyrnong Plate (1000m)

From the 1999/2000 season to 2005/2006 season the race was a Group 2 even but was then downgraded to Group 3 level the following season. Bel Esprit won the race in the 2001. Bel Esprit would go on the win the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes, and Group 1 Doomben 10,000.

Race 2: Listed Desirable Stakes (1400m)

This race has always been a Listed event from the 1999/2000 season onwards. No winners it seems went on to win a Group 1.

Race 5: Listed TAB Trophy (1800m)

Registered name of this race is the Batman Stakes. Since the 1999/2000 season the race has always been a Listed event. The big winner was in 2018....Vow And Declare, who went on to win the Melbourne Cup in 2019.

Race 8: Listed Furphy Plate (1800m)

The registered name of this is called the Melbourne Cup Day Plate. Since the 1999/2000 season, this race has always been run at Listed level and since the 1999/2000 season, the winners list has been impressive. In 2001 Fields Of Omagh won the race and would go on to win multiple stakes races including two Cox Plates. In 2005 Zipping would win the race. He would have a good career and win multiple stakes races including four consecutive Sandown Classics and two races at Group 1 level - the Australian Cup and Turnbull Stakes. In 2015 Awesome Rock would win the race. He would go on to win the Feehan Stakes and Mackinnon Stakes in the spring of 2016. In 2019 South African horse Yulong Prince would win the race and he would go on to win the Group 1 Cantala Stakes on day 1 of the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington in 2020.

Race 9: Group 3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m).

The registered name is the Maybe Mahal Stakes, named after the Bart Cummings champion horse Maybe Mahal who was the horse of the season in Australian racing for the 1977/1978 season. Since the 2005/2006 season the race was run at Listed level until the 2011/2012 season when the race was upgraded to a Group 3 event. In 2008 Neroli would win the race and would go on to win the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes in 2009.

One final one. Whilst the 2800m race (the Macca's Run) is not a stakes race. I do remember Zazzman winning the race in 2003 (when called the Lavazza Long Black) and then going on to run 3rd in the Melbourne Cup in 2004. Also, who ran 3rd in the 2003 Lavazza Long Black.....Karasi. Now in 2001 Karasi had won the Geelong Cup and ran 4th in the Melbourne Cup Behind winner Ethereal. Karasi would go on to win and place in feature hurdles races in Australia and also go on the win three consecutive Group 1 Nakayama Grand Jumps at Nakayama race course in Japan at 4250m which is one of the richest steeplechase races in the world.

I hope you all enjoy the Melbourne Cup and keep an eye on the support races as well - you just never know what up and coming horses are in these fields.

Cheers.

I like the idea of 2 weeks between runs for these youngsters
Also read that Grand Slam is Cox Plate bound so could be a doubtful derby runner or at best will be a bit gassed for the task also.

This is a topic that’s being discussed at length in the media lately so thought it’s worth bringing up here. It’s plain to see when the first 4 past the post in a Cox plate are bred in Ireland our breeding is miles behind what they are producing.

I’ve been thinking about why and I keep coming back to a horse called The Autumn Sun. A horse that never won outside his own age group and when you go back through what he beat it’s very underwhelming. Yet he has a service fee of $77,000.

Not just picking him out, any stallion that wins a Coolmoore or Guineas gets the $20 million dollar price tag. Why don’t we demand they then prove it at weight for age to warrant those $$$.

Not sure there’s an easy answer but clearly If we would like to see the Aussie bred horses start winning out majors again things need to change.
