I saw this on facebook and thought I should share it with you. I reckon Northerly is unlucky to miss out but this field is awesome. This was from the Ladbrokes Facebook page.

1. Gunsynd: $7 (59kg, Roy Higgins, barrier 3)
There isn’t another horse in this field that has a record over the mile like the Goondiwindi grey.

He had seven starts over the mile and was beaten only once, which was in the Doncaster Handicap when he carried 60.5kgs and even then he was only narrowly beaten.

As a four-year-old he won all four major mile handicap races – The Epsom, The Toorak, The George Adams (Cantala Stakes) and the Doncaster Mile.

2. So You Think: $11 (59kg, Steven Arnold, barrier 4)
Although he was a better horse over a mile and a quarter and beyond, So You Think was pure class.

His turn of foot allowed him to be more than competitive over distances around a mile with wins in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes and Underwood Stakes, while he was unlucky in both the Caulfield Guineas and the Emirates Stakes as a three-year-old.

3. Kingston Town: $5 (59kg, Malcolm Johnston, barrier 1)
We forever remember Kingston Town for his three successive Cox Plate victories, but he was such a versatile horse.

Like So You Think, he was better suited over more distance but he was so classy and adds a lot of intrigue in a race like this.

I think it is safe to say that if Bill Collin’s was creating the market for this race, he would be keeping The King safe.

4. Super Impose: $11 (59kg, Darren Gauci, barrier 8)
Super Impose had 74 race starts including eight Group 1 victories and a then Australasian record of $5.6 million in prize money.

Unlike the two horses above him, Super Impose was a genuine miler.

He won back to back Epsom Handicaps, Doncaster Handicaps and Chipping Norton Stakes all over 1600m.

5. Ajax: $26 (59kg, Harry Badger, barrier 12)
46 starts for 36:7:2.

Ajax was an incredibly consistent galloper.

In the Rawson Stakes of 1939 at Rosehill Gardens, Ajax was shooting for a record equaling 19 consecutive wins.

He started as the 1/40 favourite and lost, but that has not ruined his legacy and he would go into this contest as a genuine winning chance.

6. Lonhro: $9 (59kg, Darren Beadman, barrier 7)
Nicknamed ‘The Black Flash’, Lonhro won 26 races in total of which 25 were in stakes grade.

He won from 1100m to 2000m and the mile suited him perfectly.

He won the Caulfield Guineas, Chipping Norton and George Main all over 1600m and you can envision him stalking the field rounding the turn, ready to pounce.

7. Sunline $8 (57kg, Greg Child's, barrier 11)
Sunline competed in 48 races for 32 wins, 9 seconds and 3 thirds and won over $11 million in prize money.

She won two Cox Plates, two All Aged Stakes and two Doncaster Handicaps and was as tough as the day is long. Sunline.also won at a mile on the international stage by winning the Hong Kong Mile and defeating the Hong Kong Champion Fairy King Prawn.

Would give them something to chase rounding the turn!

8. Winx: $4: (57kg, Hugh Bowman, barrier 9)
She simply has to be the greatest of all time.

She has now won 31 consecutive races including 23 Group 1s, which is a world record.

She has won at distances ranging from 1300m to 2200m including the Epsom Handicap, Chipping Norton x 4, Doncaster Handicap and George Main x 3 at 1600m.

Would be deserving favourite in a race of this quality and the bookies would still be shaking in their boots.

9. Black Caviar: $11 (57kg, Luke Nolan, barrier 2)
Before you start sending hate mail, we are aware the great mare was never tested at a mile.

She did win the Group 1 C.F Orr Stakes over 1400m and there were plenty that thought she would handle the mile on class alone.

You would be brave to back against her considering she was never beaten in her racing career and we may actually get a price in a race like this!

10. Emancipation: $13 (57kg, Ron Quinton, barrier 5)
Emancipation only raced as a three and four year old however she managed to win 19 of her 28 race starts.

She won six Group 1s which included beating the great Manikato in the George Main Stakes.

She was out of a mare called Ammo Girl, who was sired by Gunsynd!

11. Weekend Hussler: $26 (56kg, Brad Rawiller, barrier 6)
Weekend Hussler was a very talented horse in his own right, however he may not be quite as classy as some others in this field.

For balance we thought it a good idea to throw some three-year-old’s into the mix and his form as a three-year. He won nine of his 11 starts as a three year old including the Caulfield and Randwick Guineas over the mile.

12 Surround: $15 (54kg, Peter Cook, barrier 12)
Another horse that is probably better suited over more ground, however her record as a three year-old was outstanding and she had enough class to be competitive over the mile.

She won 12 of her 16 starts as a three year-old and is still the only filly to have won the Cox Plate.

Who would you be backing?

Reference: https://www.racing.com/news/2019-03-12/comment-do-away-with-stakes-racing

Comment: Do away with Stakes racing
Racing Article Matt Welsh@Themodernpunter 12:37pm O
,(
To get the best racing the best, something must change.

There's simply too much Stakes racing. Too many options for aspiring stallions to build their value and fillies to get all-important 'black type'.

How often do you hear a trainer say of a filly, 'She's done her job, she's off to the breeding barn'?

There's no motivation to take on the best. In fact, best practice is to avoid the champions and find the easiest route to securing owners that lucrative Stakes win.

That's not to be critical of breeders, owners and trainers who exploit the current system. Racing's programming does nothing to encourage our superstars to clash.

Who wouldn't dodge Winx with a valuable colt when they can get a Group 1 win against their own age or a lesser-quality open age field when, in reality, the breeding industry doesn't note who you beat, simply the classification of the race.

It's a flawed logic. But it's the legacy we are left with in abiding by a grading system developed for the pre-computer, pre-internet age where gradings were an easy reference for breeders when assessing horses from across the globe.

Why do we need to assign a Group or Listed status to modern-day races? Why should horse racing be dictated to by the breeding industry rather than the other way around?

This isn't to be critical of the breeding industry, it's a vital part of making the industry tick but the reality is the lure of the breeding barn is compromising our racing.

If Group and Listed races were stripped of their grading it would encourage the best horses to tackle the best in an attempt to build their CV ahead of their breeding career.

Using The Autumn Sun as an example, his owners have a plethora of options far more appealing than challenging the world's best racehorse, Winx, in what would be a tantalising match-up.

Both Winx and The Autumn Sun will have their next run at Rosehill on March 23.

Both horses are looking for 2000 metres based on how they raced in their recent 1600-metre wins.

However, despite the 2000-metre Group 1 WFA Ranvet Stakes being an ideal option for both, it's unlikely racing will get the clash it seeks.

There are two other options for The Autumn Sun to get another Group 1 on the same day without tackling Winx. There's the 2000-metre Rosehill Guineas against his own age or the Ranvet Stakes with his stablemate Winx instead heading to the 1500-metre George Ryder Stakes.

The 1500m doesn't look as suitable for Winx given the way she is racing, but she's Winx and she will win anyway.

To me, the thought that The Autumn Sun's stud value would continue to rise while collecting 3YO Group 1 wins but go down if he got beaten five lengths into second (assuming he'd run second) by the greatest horse in the world is rather preposterous.

If he were to run second to Winx and beat home a horse like Happy Clapper his value should increase a great deal more than for winning a lowly-rated Group 1 Caulfield Guineas that has seen one subsequent winner (outside of The Autumn Sun) from 26 more starts with 22 unplaced runs and three placings - in a Class 1 at Ballarat and a BM74 and 76 at Canterbury and Kensington.

Take away Group and Listed races and the game changes, suddenly there's motive for the best to tackle the best.

The impact on punters, trainers and owners would be negligible. Prizemoney would remain the same and the crowds wouldn't be impacted, but the breeding industry would value horses on the quality of a race and who a horse beat rather than leaning on the Pattern.

The time-honoured races would still be steeped in history and tradition. But it would also allow the more recently-added races that our sport needs to encourage the next-generation fan to flourish and, where deserved, attract the best-possible fields.

Horse racing doesn't need the grading system to enhance its product; in fact, it's holding the product back. Do away with it and let those who climb to the top of the mountain enjoy the fruits of the breeding barn, rather than those who have been cunningly placed against their own age group.

Racing makes the breeding industry and as a thank you the best horses are retired as soon as they've ticked boxes required to have a career post-racing. It's time to take our best horses back, keep them racing and force them to beat the best before they can be considered stallion-worthy.

Racing Post reports......

All of Thursday's British cards have been cancelled following an outbreak of equine influenza, but what does this mean for racing?

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details are established.

What has happened?

Late on Wednesday evening, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) reported there had been three positive cases of equine influenza in vaccinated racehorses and announced that all meetings in Britain on Thursday were cancelled. The decision was taken so as not to risk further spread of the disease.

What is equine influenza?

It is described as the most potentially damaging of the respiratory viruses that occur in horses in the United Kingdom, with symptoms including high fever, coughing and nasal discharge. It is not usually fatal, although there can be complications from pneumonia. Incubation can take two to six days and horses can remain infectious for seven to ten days. Recovery can sometimes take several months.

Why is there so much concern?

Equine influenza is highly contagious and can be airborne over reasonable distances as well as being transmitted indirectly, including via people. Horses from the infected yard raced at Ayr and Ludlow on Wednesday, potentially exposing a significant number of horses from across Britain and in Ireland.

When will racing resume?

The BHA has said no definitive decisions on whether racing can take place on Friday or in the coming days will be taken until later this evening once test results return on Thursday evening.

Could the Cheltenham Festival or Aintree Grand National meeting be affected?

There is no indication yet on how long racing might be affected.

What about Irish racing?

Racing is going ahead in Ireland but British horses have been barred from being entered in races in Ireland for the time being.

Have there been outbreaks of equine influenza in the past?

Yes. Mandatory vaccination of racehorses was introduced by the Jockey Club in 1981 following an outbreak in 1979 which caused widespread disruption. A further outbreak occurred in 1989 in which vaccinated horses were not protected. The most major recent outbreak was in 2003 when more than 1,000 horses were affected in 21 yards in Newmarket. However, racing continued during that outbreak.

What about abroad?

A major outbreak of equine flu in Australia in 2007 led to widespread cancellation of racing including the Sydney Spring Carnival and cost the industry millions of dollars. However, the major difference with the UK was that the racehorses in Australia had not been vaccinated and immunity was far lower than it is in the UK.

I reckon there is a chance they will run her in a 5th Cox Plate.

What is everyone elses feel on this.

Another high class meeting coming up for final day of Cup week. VRC Sprint Classic, Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the MacKinnon just a few highlights.

Going to back three in the Queen Elizabeth all around 9/1 and upwards...#3. Lord Fandango - last chance and then never ever again! Has Kerrin McEvoy aboard - will need him, was ok in the Bendigo Cup - keeping the faith.
Then two right into double figures #6. Casterton - import for Chris Waller - was good in the Geelong Cup when running on at the business end, and #12. Miss Admiration finished off ok in the Herbert Power and ran on again in the Moonee Valley Cup - has Damian Oliver to navigate her and he was in form on Oaks Day.

For the VRC Sprint - Kementari on a 1 x 5 basis - was fantastic at the Valley behind Brave Smash when making up heaps of ground. Should go well up the Headquarters straight.

Half time at the Carnival. For punters the third quarter ( premiership quarter ) is Oaks Day. Ladies Day. Traditionally has mostly been a favourites race for the three year old fillies, the exception being the massive boilover in 2016 - Lasqueti Spirit.
Two winners had a lot of time for were Samantha Miss and Dear Demi both all quality.

This year like Amphitrite and Very Elegant. Both ran on Saturday with next to no luck. She can pull a little Very Elegant, so needs to settle and hope for a good speed on up front. Amphitrite was held up badly and could have tested the top class Shillelagh with a clear run.

The other terrific race is "The Subzero"...the race for the grey horses. One of the best races to watch of the carnival. Former WA horse Ripper Rio goes around at cricket score odds...wasn't too bad at Geelong when 150/1. In the Hayes/Dabernig stable - am having $2 eachway on him! At about 66/1 that's enough, he's the rank outsider.

Think there are ten winning chances!
Going to settle on four of them between about 14/1 and 20/1 and work around them in Quinella and Exacta betting and hopefully one of them can win or run second.

They are in number order...1. Best Solution...2. Cliffsofmoher...9. Marmelo...22. Youngstar.
The other six winning chances...Yucatan, Magic Circle, Muntahaa, A Prince Of Arran, Avilius, Cross Counter plus one bolter - Finche.

Rain still forecast for Monday and Tuesday.
