But I
missed on the win. I was torned between longshot Reptillian and fancied
Audrey Rose, and at the last minute went for 4 win/place on Reptillian
instead.
Very sad, great sprinting filly

Champion jockey Glen Boss was rushed to hospital after being injured when the Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily collapsed and died after contesting a jump-out at Flemington on Friday.

The Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained mare was preparing for Friday week?s Group I Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley and is believed to have suffered a heart attack.

Boss?s manager Reece Murphy said Boss was conscious but complaining of a sore shoulder when taken to hospital and it appeared unlikely he will fulfil his engagements on Saturday at Caulfield.

Boss?s key ride is the Anthony Cummings-trained glamour three-year-old Smart Missile in the Group I Sir Rupert Clark Stakes (1400m). Smart Missile is the $3.50 favourite with Sportingbet.

Cummings said he would wait for more information before making a decision on a replacement if required.

Boss was set to replace Craig Williams aboard Crystal Lily in the Moonee Valley Group I sprint that also features Sepoy and More Joyous.

Crystal Lily?s demise comes hot on the heels of a similar fate suffered by fellow Group I winner Cedarberg and promising three-year-old Delago?s Lad in recent weeks in Victoria.

Crystal Lily not only won the Golden Slipper last year. She also finished second behind the world?s highest-rated sprinter, Black Caviar on three occasions.

A daughter of another Golden Slipper winner, Stratum, Crystal Lily won more than $2.65 million in prizemoney.
This story will be updated as more information comes to hand.

Grand National-winning owner John Halewood led the tributes to Aintree legend Ginger McCain, who died on Monday, aged 80, after a short illness.

McCain, affectionately known as Mr Grand National, made racing history by saddling Red Rum to win the great race three times in 1973, 1974 and 1977.

He added a fourth towards the end of his career with Amberleigh House in 2004 to give Halewood his greatest thrill as an owner.

"I was fortunate to have known Ginger for nearly 30 years - he was a good friend and I remember him not just for the horses we had together, but also for the great fun we shared," he said.

"It is impossible to replace him - he was a man's man in every sense but I also know he was very proud of Beryl and the family and was delighted with Donald's deserved success.

"It is a very sad end of an era.

"He is a true legend and I will miss him very much."

McCain and his wife, Beryl, were married for 50 years and have a daughter, Joanne, and a son, Donald, who took over the licence in 2006 and won the National himself with Ballabriggs this year.

McCain began his training career as a permit holder in 1953 and took out a full licence in 1969 when his stables were behind his car showroom in Southport. In 1990 he moved to Cholmondeley in Cheshire.

He worked as a taxi driver to supplement his income as a trainer prior to finding Grand National success.

It was as a taxi driver that he became acquainted with Noel le Mare, for whom he bought Red Rum.

McCain retired after the 2006 Grand National and handed over the licence to his son.

Tommy Stack rode Red Rum to that historic third National success.

The Irish trainer said: "Ginger was a great man and a great friend and it was my pleasure to have known him.

"I rode for him in numerous occasions and when he asked me about Red Rum at Doncaster Sales, I said never school him.

"He asked me to ride him when he first got him and he also asked me to ride him in his first Grand National, but I was retained by somebody else.

"To produce Red Rum on five occasions at Aintree and to never finish out of the first two is an achievement which will never be equalled."

Red Rum's first National triumph came at the expense of Crisp who was collared in the final strides after making the fearsome Aintree fences look like twigs.

His jockey Richard Pitman said: "He was such a marvellous man. Legend is used quite widely but he was a legend and he was bigger than life.

"You couldn't fail to enjoy yourself in his company.

"I thought the world of him and knew him as a friend right from the early days. I used to go with him to Southport sands when he was exercising the horses.

"It was great that Amberleigh House made his fourth win because there was so many people who felt he was a one-horse man.

"Of course he wasn't."

Ballabriggs' owner Trevor Hemmings held McCain in the greatest respect.

He said: "Legend is the correct word for Ginger. I've known the family since 1969, which is a long time.

"He was a remarkable man and despite the way he represented his personality, he was very astute, his timing was very accurate and he knew what he was doing.

"If he was going to cause controversy, he'd know exactly what he was doing and why.

"It was so nice to have the character in racing that he was. We all know that this game needs characters like that and Ginger was unique.

"I'm delighted that he saw his son win the National. Though it was my horse, even if it had been someone else's I'd still have been delighted that Donald was able to train a National winner when his father was able to see it.

"As much as racing did for him, racing owes Ginger a lot as well."

Champion jockey Tony McCoy knows better than most how difficult it is to win the Grand National, having finally got off the mark in the world's most famous steeplechase at the 15th attempt on Don't Push It in 2010.

"What he achieved with Red Rum was amazing. I know how difficult it is to win one Grand National and it looks impossible to win two," said McCoy.

"For him to train the same horse to win the race three times, I think that is an achievement that won't be matched in a long, long time.

"All records are there to be broken of course, but that is one that is going to take some beating. Red Rum is one of the most famous horses of all time.

"For him to then train Amberleigh House to win does the man even more justice and of course his name will always be synonymous with Aintree - he's an Aintree legend."

Officials at the Liverpool course plan to honour McCain's achievements.

Aintree chairman Lord Daresbury said: "Ginger was a local man and a true National legend.

"His four Grand National victories, three with Red Rum and his more recent win with Amberleigh House in 2004, was an unbelievable achievement and brought the Grand National even closer to the Nation's heart.

"Ginger was a terrific supporter of the racecourse - we will badly miss him at Aintree on raceday.

"We will be speaking to the family in the coming weeks to agree how we best remember his great achievements."

The 'voice of racing' Sir Peter O'Sullevan commentated on all of Red Rum's Nationals for the BBC and believes McCain played a big part in helping to save the race when Aintree was danger of being closed.

"It was a career of remarkable achievement," he said.

"He will always be remembered for Red Rum and rightly so because he and the horse appeared absolutely at the right time and were very much instrumental in saving the National at a period when it was very much in peril."

Jenny Pitman, who became the first woman to train the winner of the National when Corbiere won in 1983 and again with Royal Athlete in 1995, was "gutted" on hearing the news.

"Ginger's words when Red Rum died come to mind - 'We'll miss the old bugger'," she said.

"Ginger is just irreplaceable. We've known one another a very long time.

"We didn't always see eye to eye, but it was all done with good humour. He gave me stick, I gave him stick.

"He was a unique character and he was afraid of nothing."

Chris Brand, acting chief executive of the British Horseracing Authority, said: "Training the same horse to win the world's greatest race three times is a feat unlikely to be repeated, and thanks to Red Rum's three Grand Nationals Ginger McCain was one of the few racing people to become a household name."

GINGER McCAIN - WHAT THEY SAID (via Twitter)

Paul Nicholls: Sad to hear of death of Ginger McCain. What a legend.
Found this story on Racingandsports: must be desperately short on news?

KYNETON TO CUP DAY?

Tuesday, 13 September 2011: An expensive and well-travelled late maturing visitor from Perth that is nominated for the Melbourne Cup, is worth getting aboard second up at Kyneton today.

Train Crusher may have drawn the outside gate in the seventh event on the card, a Restricted 68 over 1875m, but the five-year-old gelding has distance written all over him.

He cost A$600K at the 2008 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and trialled once in Sydney over the winter of 2009 but clearly had some issues, as he then next appeared in Perth trialling almost a year later.

Several more trials then saw Train Crusher debut at the start of this year and finish a very eyecatching and strong closing fourth from well off the pace over 1200m as favourite.

It was no surprise at all he won second up, despite a tardy start, just over three weeks later as a warm favourite over 1700m.

He then went out a very short favourite next time out over 2200m but an awkward start and a heel injury saw him never look likely to justify his short quote.

Two weeks later the Shane Edwards prepared son of Pentire tackled a Restricted 68 over 2038m and once again started favourite but different tactics were adopted.

The half brother to multiple Group-winning mare Only Words and dual Listed winning mare Gibraltar Campion, was sent to the front and run down into a modest third.

Train Crusher was not seen again until August appearing in Melbourne on the Geelong synthetic track in a Restricted 62 over 1300m, where he finished a decent and not far away sixth.

Most noticeably he did not start favourite for once and under 58.5kg worked home nicely despite a coverless wide trip worse than midfield.

The form out of the race is okay too, with the winner Iconic Princess since winning again but this time easily, while the seventh and eighth finishers in Pretty Almaher and Dare I Ask also won their next outing.

Blinkers on Train Crusher and a return to natural turf with cushion should help, with the wearing of concussion plates for the first time telling you feet issues have been ever present.

Jordan Mallyon will ride the gelding for the first time and Kyneton is not a roomy track nor does it have a long home straight, so it will be interesting at what point he stokes up the visitor from the West.

Dreams are free and to be part of the first nominated batch of 163 runners for the 2011 Melbourne Cup does not cost much but from here on in that will certainly escalate!

Kolokotronis was the name of a great Greek Field Marshall, whose longevity and will to win is as legendary as his battle against the Ottoman Empire.

A later maturing horse by that name runs here for the Mark Riley stable at Mornington and Michael Walker will ride the gelding.

He finished a distant second on very heavy ground fresh up this time in last month over 1400m against maiden company, with the winner an improving mare Rock Of Ages by Fastnet Rock in the Peter Moody stable.

To show his toughness Kolokotronis ran two weeks later on testing slow ground over 1700m and scored by a half a length at Sale and defeated the well-backed and fitter Origato.

Any extra cut in the Kyneton track will play into the hands of Kolokotronis, as he will jump from gate four and that is the best barrier of his career to date.

A Shade Better is another visitor but this time from the North and the Gary Portelli stable at Warwick Farm, with the Sydney raider already having won over 1850m.

A rain-affected track will not pose any problems and this gelding can perform being ridden cold or put into a race having won when ridden handy and placed when ridden cold.

Jamie Mott will pilot from a good gate and just might put his mount into contention from the outset to see how many here are stamina suspect.

Michael Kent has two runners in the field in Corinella and La Phillyharmonic, with both mares in contention on rain-affected ground.

Corinella will appreciate the class and calibre drop in opposition from what she has been racing of late plus being by High Chaparral one does think 1875m is attainable.

She has actually raced okay without much luck in her last two starts tempo and traffic-wise, so with an in form Dean Yendall to ride include this half-sister to Changing Eyes.

La Phillyharmonic won her maiden over a mile on testing wet ground fourth up last campaign and will be in that same state today.

Keep an eye out to see if Kent runs one or both these mares since Corinella is also accepted at Sandown-Lakeside tomorrow.

Enjoy the race.
