So You Think Return Depends On Quarantine

Meanwhile in the UK overnight, racingpost.com reported: ?A 3rd Cox Plate is a possibility for dual winner So You Think, but any genuine hope of a return of the hero is likely to depend on the vagaries of Australia's quarantine regulations?. So You Think's Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien ?has expressed an interest in bringing the horse back for what would probably be his final campaign?, but O'Brien ?has also expressed annoyance at the stringent quarantine rules that would apply even before he left his Ballydoyle stables in Ireland?. Racing Victoria's Leigh Jordon confirmed: ?Aidan has said he'd definitely come back if the quarantine is right. Things are progressing in that area, but there are still a few things to be sorted.? Australian quarantine officials ?have previously cleared Ballydoyle, but only for a limited period which has now expired; a recent inspection of the famous training complex found some issues that needed to be rectified before Ballydoyle could again be approved?. Jordon said the issue ?had peeved O'Brien?. It ?is understood one of the main sticking points identified by the quarantine service was the separation of horses destined for Australia from the rest of those at Ballydoyle. Jordon noted: ?It's basically about small things, but Aidan's attitude is that it was okay before so it should be okay now - and he's not keen to change anything.? However racingpost.com also noted: ?There is no doubt the Cox Plate is on O'Brien's mind, as demonstrated by his nomination of a 2nd entry Cape Blanco, a last-start Gr1 winner in the US.? It was discovered during the post-mortem that the neurectomy had taken place.

Johnson, who claims he was unaware that horses on which the operation had been performed were banned from racing on welfare grounds and because it could compromise jockey safety, is also accused of administering steroids to three horses.

It is expected the additional evidence and summing up will have been concluded by lunchtime, but it is not known whether the panel will deliver their verdict on Tuesay or decide they need more time before announcing any decision.

From the Herald Sun:

CHAMPION Singapore sprinter Rocket Man won't have his much-anticipated showdown with Black Caviar in the Patinack Farm Classic after his trainer, Patrick Shaw, decided he would have to spend too much time in quarantine.
Racing Victoria international recruiter Leigh Jordon said Shaw was going to come out to look at local quarantine facilities next week, but told them he wasn't going to as he had reluctantly decided not to come.

Shaw told them that as Rocket Man would have to spend a month in quarantine prior to racing here it would mean he would end up spending 60 days away from Singapore.

"He would have to go straight to Hong Kong from Melbourne, meaning he would have to be outstationed for his preparation towards the Hong Kong Sprint," Shaw told the Singapore Turf Club website.

He said he could now run in Japan in the Sprinters Stakes on October 2 and then head to Hong Kong.

"He can get to Japan 10 days before the race and then can come straight back to Kranji," he said.

But while Flemington has lost one international drawcard it is likely to gain another - Hong Kong star three-year-old Bear Hero, a likely starter in the Coolmore Classic. Jordon said David Ferraris, the trainer of Bear Hero, was keen to come to Melbourne.

Bear Hero was named champion griffin and has had three starts for three wins, including one against older horses.

Jordon also said Society Rock, who won the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, was still a chance to come for the Patinack Farm Class

"His trainer, James Fanshawe, and his owner's agent have made contact with me about the Patinack Farm Classic," he said.

And next autumn English sprinter Prohibit, who won the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, is likely to run in the Lightning Stakes.

"Prohibit's trainer, Robert Cowell, has expressed a firm interest. His horse loves 1000m and straight racing and from here he can then take him to Dubai," Jordon said.

In England on Friday night, Luca Cumani's Drunken Sailor defeated Harris Tweed in the Glorious Stakes.

Connections of both have indicated they will come to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup.

Americain on track to defend Melbourne Cup

Plans for Americain to defend his Melbourne Cup title are well advanced, says one of the French-trained stayer?s Australian owners.

?He?s got two runs, a Listed race next week and then in three weeks another Group Two race over 3000 metres which he won last year,? part-owner Gerry Ryan told Sydney?s Sky Sports Radio from London.

?Then he?ll go into quarantine at Newmarket (in England) and then back to Melbourne.?

Ryan said he believed quarantine issues which have threatened European participation at this year?s Melbourne spring carnival had been resolved.

A final clearance on overseas quarantine protocols from the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) is likely to be given during a meeting with Racing Victoria officials on Thursday.

?We are meeting with AQIS and it?s likely we might have a resolution then,? Racing Victoria?s Melbourne Cup talent scout Leigh Jordan told AAP.

?Certainly, everything is heading in the right direction.

?A lot of it is dealing with issues and finding solutions before going through the logistics.

?To be 100 per cent I wouldn?t like to commit to anything before Thursday?s meeting.

?But there needs to be a decision made because nominations close for the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate next week and people need confirmation.?

Ryan, who is providing the financial backing for the formation of an Australian-based professional cycling team, has been in France to watch Cadel Evans win the Tour de France.

The Melbourne businessman took time out from Australian celebrations to visit Americain at trainer Alain De Royer-Dupre?s Chantilly stables.

?He looks as good as last year, he?s got his mind back on the job,? He?s got so much class. His win at Ascot last month, when he beat Goldikova, summed it up really.?

?On the day, nothing would have beaten him,? Hughes said.

Against him though is the up and coming three-year-old Frankel, he?s rated alongside Australian super mare Black Caviar as the best in the world and he?s yet to taste defeat.

It?s not just the fact he?s winning either, it?s the way he?s doing it with massive gaps between him and the field shaming his rivals.

No race showed this better than the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Jockey Tom Queally immediately took him to the front and at the halfway point it was as good as game over as he strode 15 lengths clear.

The final winning margin was six lengths but you get the feeling it could have been more if they had wanted to.

Having said that he did show a little sign of weakness in his last start, that?s if you can find any weakness in another Group 1 win.

In the St James Palace Stakes he once again went to the front early and set up a big lead as he turned into the straight.

He did begin to labour about a furlong form home though and that will give the Canford Cliffs camp a fair bit of confidence, especially given their horse has such good closing speed.

With that in mind the true battle in the 2011 Sussex Stakes is the battle of tactics.

It?s seems unlikely Frankel will be sent so far from home again however at the same time they may not want to have Canford Cliffs too close either.

Timing is absolutely everything for both horses and in the end it could well come down to which jockey gives the better ride on the day.

Whatever happens you can guarantee a fascinating race and one which could be considered one of the classic mile events for decades to come.

Chose your team, whether it be the unbeaten young upstart or the proven seasoned performer and get behind them in the 2011 Sussex Stakes.

Moonee Valley Cuts Dato Tan & McEwen Prize-Money

Moonee Valley Racing Club announced prize-money cuts for 2 of its feature races in September, following decisions by the Australian Pattern Committee at its annual meeting last week. Prize-money for the Gr2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) has been cut from $400,000 to $300,000 & the Gr3 McEwen Stakes (1000m) has been cut from $200,000 to $150,000. The MVRC noted it has ?contributed $540,000 in additional funding to The Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes to support its campaign to have the race elevated to Gr1 status. This has come to nothing as the Australian Pattern Committee last week decided not to elevate the race from Gr2 to Gr1. As a result prize-money has been reduced in accordance with the race?s Gr2 grading?. (Jul 28)

However, Rewilding met with an untimely demise that left the Ascot crowd stunned and perhaps unaware of the dramatic conclusion to the race that saw the front two head to the left, an action that may have cost Workforce his chance.

Buick, who was brought up in Norway had already given an emotional interview to the BBC about the desperate events in the country where he was brought up and his post-race interview summed up the feelings of many at the track.

"First of all I'd like to say how sorry I am for Rewilding and his connections, it's never nice to see that happen," he said.

Of the events in the early part of the race, Buick, who described the result as "a dream come true" said: "My fella, he jumped in the front, Ahmed Ajtebi's obviously didn't want to make the running. I let my horse stride along. It wasn't really ideal. I was happy when I got a lead off Ajtebi and took it up turning in.

"This horse is getting better and better. Today he showed how good he is. I always knew he was a very good horse but I didn't realise he was going to be this good so soon."

About the climax of the race,Buick added: "I could see Workforce out of the corner of my eye. You've got to have a lot of respect for a horse like Workforce but Nathaniel was never stopping and galloped all the way to the line."

Nathaniel is now as short as 5-1 with Betfred for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe after his two and three-quarter length win and Gosden said that connections would now look at adding him to the Longchamp race for another tilt at Workforce.

"He's won well, he loves the course," he said. "We got lucky with the wet weather coming and if we hadn't got the ground we wouldn't have been here.

"Workforce set the standard, he is a Derby and Arc winner, and hopefully with a bit of luck we can take them on again at Longchamp in October. We will have to supplement again as he'd not won a maiden when the entries closed."

Ryan Moore felt that Workforce may have been struck into on the bend and Sir Michael Stoute confirmed afterwards that he had a cut on his leg.

St Nicholas Abbey, who had been friendless in the market finished back in third and his trainer Aidan O'Brien said: "He's run a lovely race, they've gone a steady pace but we're making no excuses."

Edmonds is slowly building a team and since his departure has had 8 runners for 3 winners. One of those coincidently beating home a Patinack runner 2 weeks ago.

Here are some stats I have worked out. Since Edmonds was sacked Patinack have had approx 98 runners in Qld. They have won 7 races with 6 of those being midweek metro races (3 of those maidens) and 1 Saturday race being Metallurgical in a C6. So my maths tells me that is a SR of 14:1. As reported, Edmonds was sacked for underperforming with a SR of 5:1. I hear only good things about Edmonds and his family from those in the game and it is good to see him coming along nicely. On the other hand, it seems that there are problems within Patinack. For all the well bred runners they have, surely Tinkler isn't happy with the recent results. Adelaide seems to be the only state producing numbers which are up to satisfaction....or are they??? That stable foreman is young Adam Spitzer, another former Warwick Farm trainer. Wonder if Tinkler is questioning the sacking of Edmonds. Or the sacking of Jason Coyle. Another young trainer who continues to train winners with a limited team.

Who's next????

A legal problem has developed. It should be sorted out soon but until further notice we will not be operating on Australian sport." The spokesman declined to state specifically what legalities had forced it to close down its Australian operations. When informed by The Australian yesterday that Betdaq had withdrawn its Australian endeavours, the federal Minister for Sport Mark Arbib said: "Betting sites operating offshore without regulation are a potential threat to the integrity of Australian sport. Online gambling has been referred to Minister (Stephen) Conroy's review of the Interactive Gambling Act."

In The Australian's report yesterday it was revealed that on Wednesday Betdaq was operating on race meetings in Victoria (Sandown), NSW (Warwick Farm) and Queensland (Eagle Farm). It was also setting markets for the major football codes and promoting online casino and poker gambling.

It is expected other overseas betting agencies will attempt to bet on Australian races and sport too after Sky Racing completed a deal last week for Australian races to be broadcast live on At The Races, the major thoroughbred racing channel in the UK.

To operate on Australian race meetings, bookmakers and betting exchanges need to be licensed with the various state racing authorities. As well, betting on sport and sporting events needs licensing agreements with the sports.

The presence of sites such as Betdaq manifestly weaken the potential influence and authority of last month's commitment between the federal government, the state sport ministers and the major Australian sports to agree to national legislation to police integrity issues in sport.

The meeting, a rare consensus in the present environment of the country's politics, agreed to a multi-pronged attack on corruption.

A news release from Arbib's department said the key features of the policy were:

*Legal arrangements and integrity agreements between sports and betting companies which will include requirements to share information, provide sports with a right to veto bet types and provide a financial return from sports betting to sports;

*The establishment of a National Integrity of Sport Unit to oversee the national arrangements and provide support for smaller sports;

*Agreement to pursue nationally consistent legislative arrangements;

*The adoption of codes of conduct by sports, and;

*Government funding will be contingent on sports implementing appropriate anti-match-fixing and anti-corruption policies and practices.

The national strategy goes before the state attorneys-general for discussion next month.

However, the limits of that national code to police corruption in sport if offshore bookmakers and betting exchanges offer services to Australian punters are manifest if those betting agencies are not licensed in this country.

Licensing agreements with racing bodies and sporting codes ensure the betting agencies pay a fee for the right to use the racefields and fixtures but also agree to co-operate fully with authorities if they become aware of any suspicious betting patterns or unauthorised sports people or officials placing bets.

The chief executive of Racing Victoria Rob Hines and his NSW counterpart Peter V'landys were unaware on Wednesday that Betdaq was operating on their race meetings.

The AFL, too, did not know that the betting exchange was wagering on its competition.

In effect, the site was not monitored.

Late yesterday, Betdaq still had markets for the premiership winner in the AFL and NRL presumably because those bets are not on the fixtures themselves and punters would have already placed bets in good faith.

The Betdaq spokesman indicated that no other sport bets would be taken and relevant markets would be removed.

Hines said yesterday he had been told by his integrity services department a letter had been sent to Betdaq warning it of the dangers - a $60,000 fine every day an unlicensed agency bets on racefields - but had received no reply.
