But in the past it was TVN that was the target of the aspirations of others.

Over recent times TVN, which is 50 per cent-owned by Sydney's new super club, the Australian Turf Club, with the balance belonging to the three Victorian metropolitan racing clubs, has attracted the interest of James Packer, Foxtel and Tabcorp itself.

This time around, clearly inspired by the potential of Tabcorp's demerger, it is TVN that has sought to seize the initiative.

So why would Telstra get involved?

Well, Telstra is already something of a media partner with TVN courtesy of a host of arrangements, some exclusive, that allow it to deliver the broadcaster's content through BigPond, on mobiles and the internet through the telco's T-Box.

The prospect of a more material engagement between the telco and the racing industry's broadcaster, which is chaired by the inestimable Harold Mitchell, has been a matter of considerable speculation in racing circles ever since the former head of Tabcorp's wagering business, Robert Nason, joined Telstra.

The recognition that content drives technology uptake and usage has long been a part of Telstra's thinking (it should be remembered that in 2004 the Howard government gave the quiet nod for Telstra to chase Fairfax). And who better than Nason to drive the telco's appreciation of just how broad are the interactive needs of the average home punter.

The big question for TVN and Telstra now, given that Tabcorp doesn't want to play media merger games, is just where do they take their nascent alliance?

Could it be possible, for example, that Telstra might pursue the opportunity to become a minority partner in TVN?

Certainly this is an idea that the clubs have entertained, although rejected, in the past, when back in 2006 James Packer came knocking, offering $25 million for a 25 per cent stake.

Telstra, which has refused past invitations from The Australian to confirm it was involved in discussions with TVN about equity participation, last night refused to comment on the joint TVN bid for Sky Channel.

But a company spokesman noted that Telstra customers already get TVN product through BigPond TV, Next G mobiles and the web.

He added that: "Any discussion on how this relationship could change in the future would be purely speculative."

Indeed.

An affidavit tendered to the ACT Supreme Court in December alleged that Close used a "loophole" by placing bets on races after they had started.

From November 2001 to April 2010, Close allegedly had access to the betting system as an authorised manager, which meant she could re-open betting after a false start. This practice is usually reserved for the trots, where punters can place bets after a false start - but before the race has resumed.

Close allegedly started with small bets and spaced out the betting patterns. In 2002, she allegedly used the system to make 38 bets. By 2007 the frequency had risen by half.

The ACTTAB launched an internal investigation last May, weeks after Close is alleged to have made her final bet, which returned $14,656.

Close's lawyer Kamy Saeedi told The Daily Telegraph the case would eventually be sent to the ACT Supreme Court.

He formally entered a not guilty plea to one of the 592 charges against Close. More pleas are expected when the matters return to court on June 23.

from yesterday

Promising filly Houston Benefactor generated an extraordinary in-running betting story at Canterbury this afternoon when she was matched at $280 on Betfair after missing the start by six lengths, only to trade at the minimum price of $1.01 on the exchange when she charged through the field and appeared set to notch a miracle victory.

But there was another twist in this already staggering betting tale, as $48 outsider Exceed and Exalt broke through late to hit the line in-sync with Houston Benefactor.

The roughie was awarded the race in a photo, meaning the Anthony Cummings trained Houston Benefactor not only traded at $280 after missing the start but was also beaten after being matched at $1.01

Betfair?s Mathew Thompson said: ?I can?t remember a race where a horse traded at such opposite prices. It?s a genuine punting rarity and highlights the quality of Houston Benefactor?s run after dwelling in the gates.

?The layers were quick to offer any price when Houston Benefactor missed the start, but that quick thinking nearly brought about a punting wipeout as the daughter of Encosta De Lago charged home to figure in the finish.

?Punters were then prepared to take any price about the filly when she emerged from the pack, many taking $1.01 about her winning, only to see outsider Exceed and Exalt fly home closer to the fence.

?Regardless of whether they?ve won or lost, Betfair punters will no doubt be shaking their heads for quite a while whenever they reflect on this race.?

Courtesy of MATHEW THOMPSON of BETFAIR, 09/03/2011

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

A champion jockey narrowly escaped injury as a racehorse was hit by a taxi near the Morphettville track in Adelaide.

The horse was hit while crossing near the Morphett Road-Bray Street corner in Adelaide's south-west, just after 6:00am ACST and had to be put down due to its injuries.

Jockey Clare Lindop was riding a second horse which narrowly escaped injury in the accident.

Former jockey John Letts says he is not surprised to hear of the accident in an area where hundreds of horses train every morning.

"We've had a lot of near-misses down there over the years," he said.

"The heavy traffic and this time of the morning ... and I mean the strappers, the attendants, have all got reflective clothing but on that intersection there of Bray Street and Morphett Road it gets very, very congested and very busy.

"There's a 40-kilometre-an-hour limit down Bray Street, but even at 40-kilometres-an-hour ... I've been driving down there myself sometimes and the horses, you just don't see them come along."

Trainer Leon Macdonald said it was upsetting to lose the unraced two-year-old, which was being ridden by Brodie Petherick, who escaped unhurt.

"People who live in the area are well aware of the horses shifting around this corner and they're always pretty good to us. This bloke was obviously strange to the area, I don't know," he said.

He said Lindop's horse narrowly avoided being hit.

"Clare was shocked, she saw it coming and kicked her horse forward and it got away from the other one and she was probably nearest Morphett Road," he said.

"She moved off on her horse and got out of its way, but only just."
