The great L.J left the room late this afternoon after over 94 very fruitful years dedicated to Harness Racing. Adjudged by many to be the best farrier in the land, a very, very astute trainer of a small team, possibly the best free lance driver in the state for many decades, I think legend is a very appropriate term for him. Formed lasting relationships with Bob Clausen, Les Mourbey and Harry Bele and produced dozens and dozens of winners for them.

For those interested, I will put together some career highlights later on in the week. A childhood hero of mine and many others on the bus home from school each day, trying to work out win or place for our 5 bob on one of L.J's.

I regret to advise that Sylvia died this morning following a severe fall in her care facility.

Sylvia was the first female bookmaker in WA and probably Australia in the late 1970s. Her then husband Ian Boylan held a trot license and wanted to move to the races so Sylvia took out a trot license so they could cover both codes. At that time a bookmaker was confined to working one racing code only. I was instrumental in getting the rules changed to allow dual licenses despite strong opposition from the elite racing bookmakers.

Ian and Sylvia were good at their trade and Ian was an excellent form analyst that was capable of working outside the square.

Bit of a read, and it is orientated towards the Thoroughbred Industry, but it says everything that needs to be said about the decline of the "hobby breeders" and the effect it is having on the Industry. Those who promote the fallacious "Grow The Industry By Shrinking The Footprint" narrative should read this and then clean out their desks. They have mismanaged the industry to a future that is a microcosm of the past. It mirrors what is happening in NZ and mirrors what has happened in WA in particular and Australia in general. The big picture of Harness racing has been lost in the drive towards racing being for the exclusive few.

https://thestraight.com.au/the-tall-are-getting-taller-and-the-small-are-getting-smaller-the-changing-state-of-australias-stallion-farms/

Early Starts The New Norm?

Don't quite know what to think of the 4pm starts for Friday Night at Gloucester Park. Arguments for and against. It seems that it may become the new normal, especially in winter and possibly even into summer.

The claim that 85% of turnover emanates from the Eastern States is one of the reasons being put forward. That to my mind is a waving of the white flag on the turnover front and the argument that 90% of Australia's population is in the Eastern States, therefore, we should expect that to be mirrored in turnover figures doesn't hold up for mine. GP harness meetings are a WA product, much as Eagles or Dockers games at the Stadium are a WA product, and I'd be pretty sure that viewing figures for these games would have a much higher audience based in WA and be nowhere near 85% domiciled in the Eastern States.

Even with "85%" of harness turnover originating from the Eastern States", it is no where near enough to sustain an Industry whose overall share of turnover has shrunk to a miserable and industry threatening 10%. The reality is that overall, the product is not attractive as a betting medium, as opposed to the gallops and the greyhounds whose share of betting turnover on racing continues to grow.

It is a very sad indictment on the product if you are basically accepting that your local population has no interest in betting on or attending the Trots. Starting at 4pm and finishing by 8pm will basically put the thought of any on course presence of a crowd into the history books. It frankly makes the building of the new Grandstand and members facility to cater for a fictitious 4,500 crowd beyond logical thought, especially when Gloucester Park seem to make only a token effort to attract any patrons on course.

The argument around occupational health, and the late finishes for trainers and staff, is understandable but for country participants, it works both ways with early departure from home base creating their own set of problems with staffing arrangements and getting all the stable work done on a Friday.

For hobby trainers, it is yet another barrier, with work on a Friday at their day jobs almost impossible with a 4pm start. This may well foreshadow a further decline in participant numbers, a further shrinking of the footprint, which may after all be the driving force behind the move. The "movers and shakers", quoting certain spokespersons for the Gloucester Park Owners Association, make no secret of their desire for "3 track racing" on their doorstep so to speak and it is not inconceivable to think that moving forward, there may be only 6 to 12 professional stables racing each other, with all the hobbyists and part timers sidelined out of the industry, with trotting in country centres being consigned to the history books.

It would be beneficial if the claims of increased turnover, for many things including the sprint race format at Pinjarra and the seemingly weekly 6 horse FFA's each Friday night, were supported by the release of actual figures.

Something has to happen shortly. The collapse of two $30,000 two year old West Sired races on Friday night, just 4 nominations for the colts and only two for the fillies, is indicative of both hopeless programming and an alarming decline in numbers and I am not totally sure that 4pm starts to appease a few big eastern states punters is the answer. Growing the industry at a local level, making decisions to encourage new, and sustain existing participants, may be a far better strategy. And seeing references in the latest BOTRA minutes about the Harness Racing Consultative Group listing the "transfer of Kellerberrin Meetings to Northam" should send shivers down the spine of all WACHRA Executive members.

What was once a mirage may well become a reality.

"The Camels Are On The Horizon".

There
is an upcoming WASBA Feature Race at Narrogin (following on from the
Color Glo Tribute) on Saturday July 6th, the "Salute To Red Vicar". A $14k race with garland and trophy for the winner.

It
is wonderful that the mighty Red Vicar is being recognised. There
should be a statue of him in the Narrogin Town Square or Entrance. As a 3
year old, he raced in the district at Katanning, Wagin and Narrogin for
trainer Vic Murphy and driver Colin Murphy,
winning 5 races including the Great Southern Derby, rating 2.19 around
the small 3 furlong tracks. For such a magnificent long striding horse,
complete with his stunning chestnut coat and white socks, it was an
imposing sight to see him getting around the tiny circumference circuits
as well as he did.

Transferred to Phil Coulson's Herdsman Parade
stables, he announced his arrival when winning a Qualifying Stakes at
Gloucester Park on Saturday December 5th, 1970. Sensationally supported
from 10/1 into 7/4, the meeting corresponded with the Ashes Test Match
over the road at the WACA, and visiting press from England collected
handsomely courtesy of a Ken Casellas tip off as Red Vicar careered
home by over 50 metres. It was an astounding win, and afforded Ken god
like status in the press box on the same night that Coulson produced
Juniors Image for a statement win in a heat of the Christmas Gift.
Course commentator George Grljusich had of course declared the runner up
to Red Vicar, a handy mare named Brunette, to be his best bet on the
programme and in typical fashion, declared that Brunnette was unlucky
and that Red Vicar would never beat her again. George's statement didn't
age well.

Red Vicar would also win a heat of the Christmas Gift a
fortnight later whilst Juniors Image, after winning the Final, headed to
New Zealand for the Interdominion Series. Red Vicar continued to march
through the classes with Fred Kersley deputising for Coulson whilst he
was in NZ, but Coulson was back on board when Red Vicar won both his
Heat and the Final of the prestigious Easter Handicap for new trainer
Geoff Sherriffs. Coulson continued to win race after race, a remarkable 9
wins from 10 starts, until his disqualification from NZ took effect.
Fred Hough took charge of the reins during the WA Pacing Cup campaign
(4th in the final off 12 yards) culminating in a win in the J.P Stratton
Cup. The Interdominion in Brisbane was the main goal and with Fred
Kersley driving, Red Vicar won multiple Free For Alls and the Easter Cup
prior to traveling to Albion Park. It is now history that after winning
a heat and qualifying for the Final, the heavily supported Red Vicar
galloped at the start before flying home to finish 4th to Welcome
Advice, a certainty beaten to quote the inimitable George Grljusich.

Transferred to Lawrie Moulds after the Inters, Red Vicar won the Albion
Park 10,000, main events at Harold Park and Time Trialed in 1.59.6, a
Queensland record. His 22 starts that season resulted in 13 wins for a
then monumental $39,563 in stakes and he set 3 Australian distance
records over 9 furlongs, 13 furlongs (from the mobile) and 14 furlongs.
Not bad for a Westbred son of an unraced sire (Overdew) from Ted
Abbott's unraced dam in Bonnie's Kay. He was a magnificent champion and
it is most fitting of Narrogin Race and Pace and WASBA to be
commemorating this stunning horse. All up, he won 31 races including 18
metropolitan wins in WA at both Gloucester Park and Richmond Raceway,
and 5 metropolitan wins at Albion Park and Harold Park. I have never
seen a better ocean swimming horse than "Big Red", he was an absolute
powerhouse and he was a major draw card at the track. Probably a bit
boring for many but it gives some context as to why the great champ is
being honored.
