Liked its run 2 starts back at Northam , the Relatively Arma formline i think is sound , it broke 2 minutes and it didnt have a cosy pegs run

And her trainer Lang Inwood i think he does a good job with the quality of the horses he gets ,he would have plenty in work they race consistent and he consistently trains regular winners

The FFA on Friday night is ostensibly a PBD but being based on Harness Win ONLY Earnings last 2 starts, it throws up a bit of an anomaly.

While They Pray is ODM, so it has to get gate 6. JJMAC is the only runner to have won in it's last two starts, so it has to get gate 5. The other 4 runners have not won in their last two starts, so it becomes a random draw for them with Wildwest winning out with gate 1.

The earnings (not win earnings) for each of the 4 in their last two starts is as follows (In barrier draw order):

Too Fast Too Serious $1,228

There are strong views either way on PBD v RBD but given the programmed conditions for this race, this is, depending on your point of view, either a half pregnant PBD or a half pregnant RBD......and a 6 horse, pay 1,2 only pregnancy at that.

Divided Stakes

A short time ago, after a spate of 5 and 6 horse Free For Alls (may have even been a few 4 horse fields), the concept of divided stakes was introduced along with running some "country/mid week class races, to ensure full(er) fields and 10 race programs for Friday Nights.

No more weekly 6 horse Free For Alls as a matter of course was also circulated and that was implemented. There were some misgivings but overall, it was accepted.

However, that policy seems to have fallen by the wayside as we see a 6 horse FFA and a 7 horse Conditioned Pace for Friday Night, $56,000 in stakes being shelled out for 13 horses. Surely a L11 to L15 divided Stake for $25k or even $30k if you wish, a preferential Barrier draw based on level would have produced a better race, better turnover, a larger pay 1,2,3 field and saved some money to be distributed elsewhere?

It seems at odds to run these two races but a $6250 race at Kellerberrin or Wagin will get the chop in order to save money?

First 3 months down 22% and April down 25%

Its getting worse and you can see it , just looking at Tab touch

and Betfair. It doesn't help that Tab touch reducing so many bets.

If you cant bet and get rduced of cause turnover will be down.

I think Saturday night at Bunbury says it all $2 million on lights

and still don't all work. Early quad had $320 in the pool, never

WA Harness Handicapping Proposal

At Racing WA, we’re making a focused effort to create more competitive racing, improve racing opportunities and consequentially increase wagering turnover on WA harness racing.

Over the past two months or so, our new dynamic approach to race programming has seen increased field sizes and consistent 10-race programs at Gloucester Park on Friday evenings.

While this has been a fantastic result and led to a spike in turnover, it’s important we continue to innovate to improve and optimise the product and subsequently attract further wagering.

That’s why Racing WA is proposing we embrace the national ratings handicapping system starting from January 1, 2025.

The Dumesny Report has highlighted the shortcomings of our current handicapping system, especially in comparison to the national standards. The national ratings system proved its effectiveness since its inception, and in 2023:

Only 6.75% of races featured favorites priced at $1.30 or worse, compared to 17.49% in WA.
Similarly, 18.35% of races had favorites priced up to $1.60, as opposed to 35.8% in WA.
And 31.8% of races featured favorites priced up to $1.90, while in WA, this figure stood at 53.9%.

Utilising the national ratings system is projected to lead to a significant reduction in short-priced favorites in WA, ultimately driving higher turnover.

It also offers us the opportunity for a complete programming reset as we work towards improving the manner in which we program to the population, to seasonality, to differing levels of ability and to juveniles.

To ensure a smooth transition and to gather valuable insights from all stakeholders, I – with the support of the team at Racing WA – will conduct handicapping and programming consultation sessions.

The dates for these sessions will be announced shortly, however, I encourage your active participation and involvement.

One crucial aspect that we'll address in these discussions is juvenile programming, particularly focusing on developing a comprehensive calendar for our two-year-old horses.

It's imperative we nurture young talent and provide them with the best platform to showcase the top-quality standardbreds we have on offer in WA.

I’d like to emphasise the adoption of the national ratings system will maintain a 'net-neutral' impact. Racing WA is committed to working with Harness Racing Australia and other states to ensure the fair distribution of ratings points.
