I just watched a trot race, race 6 at Yarra Valley over 2,600.

I have, from time, criticised race callers, especially those who are so concentrated on the leader and winner over the last 100 metres of a race, especially when that horse is 4 or 5 lengths in front, that they forget about calling which ones have the chance to run second or third, leaving punters who can only listen to the race, in the dark.

Having said that, I have to applaud the caller at Yarra Valley Harness for an absolutely brilliant call.

I don't know the name of the caller as I don't follow the trots here, but it was an absolutely brilliant call. Only 8 horses, but, adopting the adage which Bill Collins once told me, that being, "when I call a race, I call as if it's to a blind person, I watched the race with that in mind.

When I used to bet on the trots, and even nowadays when, from time to time if there is nothing else on and I'm watching Gloucester Park on a Friday night, or the odd race at Melton, or Albion Park, the callers both in the past, and it continues today, don't bother with telling the punters who can only listen but not watch, where exactly, the last 4 or 5 runners are positioned in a race.

If I'm punting, the horse I backed might be third last, but it's a huge difference to me listening, if I'm told that it's third last on the outside or third last on the inside behind a wall of horses. And the callers, rarely, if ever, tell you.

So as a lesson in how to inform punters who cannot watch a race, and even to those that can, watch race 6 from Yarra Valley today, and see how it's done. The caller did not miss a beat.

If you were listening in your car, you knew exactly where your horse was positioned throughout the 2600 metres of the race. It was a brilliant call, and a lesson to all harness callers, on how it's done.

I have just noticed there are new classes for all trotting races in WA. I part own a couple in Robert the Bruce NZ and Beltane.

I am from the old school of C0 or M0, etc. Could somebody please explain how it works - my understanding is there is a lot of negativity about these changes but being a Victorian I would be rapt if someone can help.

Some of the feedback coming out of the Harness Outreach Sessions paints a disturbing picture with overall share of harness turnover plunging below 12 % and return on dollar invested falling from an already worrying 48 cents in the dollar to a disastrous 42 cents in the dollar. Perhaps RWWA and new appointee Cammeron Brown may care to obtain a copy of the WACHRA Submission presented to both the Minister and Shadow Minister. Clearly, the current business model has been an abject failure and history shows that previous rationalisation decisions have been detrimental to Industry growth with all indicators clearly in decline. It seems the metrocentric driven agenda proposed by some influential figures cannot stop the Industry from disappearing into the abyss after falling off the proverbial cliff. Time for some major changes of direction from our esteemed administrators before it is all over red rover. "Growing the Industry by reducing the footprint" clearly won't cut the mustard.

has been doing a power of work behind the scenes to support the ongoing
future of country harness racing (both Clubs and Race Dates) and
recently presented a comprehensive 35 page submission to Minister Whitby
in his office last Friday. This submission was prompted by ongoing
speculation of a further "rationalisation" by RWWA of country racing,
confirmed in person with a number of key players.

Subsequent to the
submission being presented, Shadow Racing Minister Peter Rundle
today asked a probing four part question directed to Minister Whitby
during question time in the Legislative Assembly concerning the
Minister's position. An audio/video link for question time is provided below.
The question occurs at the 56 minute mark of the link followed by
the Minister's answer. His response is very supportive of WACHRA's
submission (which he has yet to fully digest having been away for 4
days) and very positive with regard to the ongoing future of Country
Harness Racing and the Country Clubs. Clearly, Minister Whitby, Shadow
Minister Rundle and WACHRA are on the same page.

When The Hansard

Shadow Minister's questions and the Ministers response.

an email concerning updates (increases) to the Trainer Subsidy that they receive for EACH
starter at a race meeting. There was particular emphasis in the increase in the rate for meetings held on Sundays, call it a form of overtime penalty rate.

Excellent news indeed. For Sundays and Public Holidays, the subsidy will now be $290 per starter. The is a scale of subsidy payment for other meetings depending on metro or regional with Saturday Metro starters receiving $190 per starter down to $140 per starter for provincials.

As I understand it, this subsidy is paid to gallops trainers for just taking
their horse to the races, regardless of where it finishes, so long as
the trainers percentage for placing 1st to 5th doesn't exceed the
subsidy. A minimum guaranteed payment to the trainer for his labour and time.

No such subsidy is paid to Harness
Trainers, zero, zilch. Greyhound trainers also receive a starter subsidy
(I think it is around $50 per dog but stand corrected if wrong).

This is
blatant and pointed discrimination against the Harness Industry. If a
harness trainer takes for example, 3 horses to a Sunday meeting at
Kellerberrin, all he is entitled to is 7.5% of the stake earned in
finishing 1st to 5th. Should all 3 of his runners finish 6th or worse,
the trainer receives nothing, not a cent.

There
is a $150 unplaced subsidy paid to the owner but the trainer gets
nothing. So, a potentially 10 hour working day (from loading the horses
onto the float at, for example Serpentine in my trainers case, a 3 hour
trip to a daylight Kellerberrin meeting, arriving 1 hour before the race. potentially 3 to 4
hours on course depending upon what race the horses are in etc, and then the 3
hour return trip, unload, feed up etc) goes completely unrewarded.
Basically, working for nothing.

A galloping
trainer taking 3 horses on a Sunday or a Public Holiday to a Country meeting is guaranteed a
minimum of 3 x $290 for his working day. This unjust situation is simply wrong and
highlights yet another example of how harness and it's participants are
treated so poorly. To add insult to injury, with gallops stakes up to 4 times higher than harness, the trainers percentage at the gallops dwarfs those paid to harness trainers.

Why someone hasn't taken
this to a Fair Work Commission hearing,or wherever, is beyond me.
Discrimination based on RWWA's perception of worthiness? It is rubbish and should be rectified immediately.

Nomination packs can be collected from the GP Office between 8.30 and 4.30pm, no mailing or emailing option made available? Not available on race nights? Country members are not being encouraged?

Candidates must be nominated by 2 members who are currently financial (fair enough) and who have paid their membership subscriptions for 2023/2024...interesting as accounts have not yet been issued for the 2023/24 membership year??

Nominations will be accepted by the CEO through the Gloucester Park Office during office hours 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday, does not appear to be a postal option?
