A comprehensive new facility, on course stabling, training facilities etc. The contrast between what they are contemplating, how they are going about it and the end product could not be starker when compared to the the nonsense redevelopment of GP that will also swallow up $24.7 million of RWWA Industry funds.

Funeral tomorrow for highly respected horseman (originally from Katanning) Ross Ashby after a long health battle.

Trained the majority of the 'Disco" horses for John and Sue Awcock of Bridgetown, which they bred from the broodmare gem Madam Butterfly, a sister to Tailamade Lombo, Espeshlimade Lombo etc.

Some of the really good ones included Disco Force (Ray Jones as well), Johnny Disco, Disco Flyer. Disco Spirit, Dalmore Disco and many many others. The 'Disco" prefix from John's kids Dianne and Scott.

Appropriately, Disco Dynamo saluted today at Bunbury.

TABForm Race Description in The West

Old mate asked me this morning about the descriptor headers for each race at GP tonight in the TAB form published in The West this morning. He is a rusted on ex owner and trainer, now retired, so not completely unfamiliar with the handicap system. Been training for 4 decades prior to chucking it in last year.

He pointed out that there was no indicator for RBD or PBD and that the abbreviations for each race descriptor had recently changed? I must admit I hadn't noticed if they had or not but a close look explains his confusion.

For example ..Race 4. "3YO and older Fillies and Mares $8,000 I $9,000". To the initiated, it is a "dollars last 5 Less Than $8,000" conditioned race with a stake of $9,000, to the uninitiated it is quite confusing about what the stake is, no indication of the class of horses engaged, no indication of PBD or RBD and not conducive to having an even slightly educated bet.

Same with race 6, probably even more confusing. "3YO and older $12,000 I $9,000" and race 7 and 8 " 3YO and older $8,000 I $9,000" with the added confusion of Div1 and Div2 added in.

I looked up HRA to find that race 1 and 2 were PBD ( a good thing), based on HWOE for race 1 and Level on race 2, which I think are one in the same thing? The other races were all RBD.

Broken record I know but one of my first concerns dating back to HWOE's inception from November 2018 was the thoroughly confusing terminology and abbreviations that few outside of the Industry understood, along with a high percentage within the Industry. I was widely rubbished for suggesting punters would not understand given the poor introduction process.

With turnover continuing to head south at a rapid rate, run of the mill punters continue to turn their backs on harness racing in droves. Meanwhile, only a dim wit would continue to program both a Conditioned Pace and a FFA week in week out, in the middle of winter with a reduced fast class horse population, producing 4 and 5 horse fields, paid trials for the big end of town that no one bets on.

It took me 15 minutes to explain to him what each race was about and even then, I am pretty sure his last quite polite comment was along the lines of "What a complete crock of you know what, any wonder the boys down at Pub TAB are throwing their 10 bucks on a mystery trifecta at the dogs whilst having an afternoon beer or two."

SA Cup Revamp and Relaunch.

Today,
all major details of this new-look SA Cup meeting are released, with
Globe Derby Park to host SA Cup Night on Saturday, October 28.

The following feature races above $15,000 have been programmed:

$60,000 SA Pacing Cup Final (2645m)

$40,000 SA Trotters Cup Final (2645m)

$30,000 SA Derby Final (2230m)

$25,000 2YO Golden Nursery Final (1800m) – standard Golden Nursery eligibility conditions apply

All of the above races will be heats into finals events, with heats contested at Globe Derby on Friday October 20, preceeded by a couple of "win and your in" races in the month leading up to the Cup. Not huge money but a big boost to SA, finally an event to promote.

Now, all the "anti heats" brigade will burst out in hives, as they usually do when self interest rules, coming up with all the usual reasons about "bad luck cost MY HORSE" and "only racing to qualify" arguments but it's time the Geckos looked wider than themselves and looked towards what is best for the Industry.

I applaud the new CEO's attempts to revive what is basically a dead cat in SA, a promotable set of heats and a final for their Cup, a proven formula and one that WA, on the bones of its turnover backside, should immediately implement.

Mistaken Identity

Just came across a result from Kalgoorlie, October 1 ,1995. Horse raced as "Retzlaff NZ but horse was really Arthurian".Race was won by Just Like Poppins (Barry Warwick) with Arthurian DISQ.

I was overseas in the USA at this time, can't recall it at all. Ivory Trunkey or Chariots, can you recall any details?

Brown 4yo Retzlaff later won 2 races at Kalgoorlie much later in the season (his only career wins from 35 attempts) for J.T.Warwick/P.J Fairless and bay 7yo Arthurian didn't win that season..

Previous results in September show the horse that raced as Arthurian (on two occasions) was in fact Retzlaff and was also disqualified.

The following position was advertised this morning on RWWA website. The closing date for applications is astonishingly next Tuesday May 16th, barely time to put pen to paper of finger to keyboard. Rumours suggest it will be an appointment external to the organisation. They may even have their person already? Rumours also suggest that a major round of country club rationalisation (read closure) is imminent. The scope of the job is very encompassing:

As a Head of Harness Racing and Special Projects you will oversee the
strategic planning and racing operations functions for the harness
racing code, ensuring efficient and effective delivery and compliance
where required. The successful person will be required to lead and
implement the strategic plan for harness racing, in particular
implementing change to achieve a more sustainable industry in the
long-term. In addition, you will support the Chief Racing Officer in
delivering key strategic project across the three racing codes.

Other tasks and projects will include:

Review the strategic plan for the harness racing code to achieve the outcome of a more sustainable industry in the long-term
Infrastructure planning for each harness racing facility
Implement strategic initiatives for harness racing, ensuring alignment to corporate strategy.
Key contributor to content of industry funding allocations and associated planning
Oversee race date scheduling and race programming, ensuring revenue opportunities are maximised and compliance with policy.
Review and amend as required, handicapping and race programming policies for harness racing in WA.
Oversee handicapping, race field selection and associated racing services functions. 
Contribute to the development of learning programs to increase the professionalism of the harness racing industry. 
Manage the operational budget.
Manage
annual distribution budget for the harness racing code and keep abreast
of developments at a national and international level.

Whilst there are many areas listed above that many would think need urgent attention (review of teh strategic plan (the New Business Model clearly a failure?), race progamming, race date scheduling, field selection, handicapping (is this the beginning of NR?), the focus on funding and operational budgets/distribution budget/alignment with corporate strategy/industry funding allocations etc may suggest the ground is being prepared for a slash and burn approach (after the mandatory "review" of course) to the remnants of the Industry.

Reviews have in the past been conducted after outcomes have been pre determined as per Sir Humphrey Appleby's famous explanation but that would be a cynical suggestion. But country clubs may well be in the cross hairs. And if that happens, as per previous incarnations of rationalisation, the Industry will undergo further shrinkage to the point of not being viable at all. How long would the Central Wheatbelt Club last if told to race at Northam or Wagin being told to race at Narrogin, or Collie and Busso being reduced to a single boutique date racing a Bunbury. It would be good night nurse very quickly.

Time will tell, it may well be the opportunity for a new broom approach down at Hasler Drive Harness. Interesting times. What will the Minister and the Shadow Racing Minister make of these developments?

Unplaced Stake Reduction

Must have missed the announcement from RWWA but the 6th to 10th stakes payment in the $6,000 races at Narrogin last night have been reduced from $150 to $60. Great incentive for the battling owner and trainer to exit the Industry along with their horses. The $150 payment remains the same in the $9,000 races.

Interestingly, the $6,000 race at Bunbury on Wednesday retains its unplaced payment at $150 as per the advertised conditions and the HRA form guide.

Two weeks in a row, the Industry can afford to run a $30,000 Free For All for 5 horses for the benefit of the top end but it cuts $90 dollars off those that probably need it most in order to continue participating. That will grow the Industry from the base up, won't it?

And it is great to turn up at a race meeting and read about the change in the racebook as you are gearing up the horse.

Trots-Handicapping-Betting - We have a problem!

Looking at trot meetings last three days, Narrogin, Kellerberrin and Gloucester Park (up to race 6),

16 of the 21 winners have paid $1.80, $1.07, $1.60, $1.12, $1.36, $1.04, $1.75, $1.32, $1.38, $1.60, $1.14, $1.26, $1.01, $1.01, $1.80, $1.12.

Is it any wonder trots is at the bottom end of betting in the three codes - and our races take the longest (in time) to run.

We have a handicapping problem. Back in the 60's, 70's, 80's it was a big deal if a horse was 3/1 on ($1.33), but now we have winners at 100/1 on, 25/1 on etc, on an achingly regular basis, especially at Pinjarra every Monday afternoon.

RWWA - please "Do Something!!!". Listen to BOTRA. Listen to the industry, listen to the punters.

I have been involved in trotting all my extensive life, and the current handicapping system gives me a nose bleed - I just don't understand it or get it.

I did when it was C class and M class and age races, but now????

In my opinion the best horse should be given every chance ie Random Barrier Draws, and as you win you go to a tighter mark, but still RBD.

Like it or not, this industry is in trouble, make some changes. "LIV" it up a bit.
