No doubt, lots of differing views about the the Nullabor.

Was it a worthwhile exercise, was it value for money, will it reinvigorate the Industry and so on.

On balance, I think it was worth a throw at the stumps. The weather stymied the crowd and no amount of repetitive photos from the publicity arm of GP (over 200 on facebook but many of the same people inside the restaurants) will alter that fact. To tout it as a "BIG" crowd is frankly a nonsense but rain was very much unwelcome. "BIG" crowds have not been seen at the venue for decades, fireworks or no fireworks. Apparently, only Western Australians are keen on fireworks, all those millions that line Sydney Harbor each New Year must be an illusion.

However, there was some quality interstate representation for the first time in ages and two fine young drivers involved. There was some good industry generated publicity, barrier draws and the like, and some quality promo videos produced. In spite of Ernies efforts, The West seems to have written off Harness Racing and the Friday edition focussed almost entirely on the Quokka with no mention or articles on the Nullabor. Very poor from the Sports Editor.

The race itself was a good watch, competitive and unlike much of our pedestrian $1.10 gate speed, lead and win rubbish that the system serves up week in week out. In that respect, it was refreshing. Certainly, the post race discussions about who drove well and who didn't has got tongues wagging with some absolute almost Trumpian nonsense written interspersed with informed views. File that under the "any news is good news" category.

Was it a cheap exercise? Well, on balance a firm NO. There was the $300,000 stakes top up from industry funds plus the $70,000 purchase of a slot. Some could argue that the money could have been well spent elsewhere. Having then had their slot horse successful in the race, we are informed that RWWA/TABtouch's share of the $500,000 would be donated to suitable charities. Hmm, perhaps the industry itself is a suitable charity. Then, there are costs associated with the aircraft getting the participants here and returning them home and the hospitality costs of wining and dining the guests and associated Industry folk upstairs on race night. It would be interesting to see how many actual paid tickets were sold and who covered the tab for all the guests and officials. Presumably, the many syndicate shareholders didn't have to stump up entry fees at the gate and nor should they but with them and industry participants racing their own horses that night making up a substantial chunk of the downstairs crowd, I would doubt that gate receipts would have contributed a whole lot.

Turnover wise, given that the only available figures are TABtouch parimutual, and acknowledging the limitations of that data, well, the figures are horrible. There was just $34,000 invested on the win/place pool for the Nullabor compared to $350,000 for the Quokka on the Saturday. The Dogs by comparison was just $18,000 win/place. Both the trots and teh dogs had a carryover boosted first 4 pool of around $100,000 but the quokka (unboosted) was $214,000. Trotting races frequently don't have high turnover but race 7 had a win/place of $27,000, so any suggestion that the Nullabor was a turnover magnet are sadly unjustified.

The idea of running both the dogs and trots on the same night never seemed even remotely sensible, displacing the dogs from their normal Saturday night slot and pushing the Nullabor back to race 9. It appears to have been a tactical error. Running against the Race For Grins in NZ was also very questionable. As it was, the win/place figures for that race at 4.50pm in the afternoon were $57,000, arguably a higher quality field might have boosted that.

So, as with all things, wins and losses, swings and roundabouts. I think we must keep trying so a provisional plus I reckon...let see how it evolves for next year and whether the date shifts and what the long term boost may or may not be. The low noms for Friday should not be used for short term analysis of the benefit or otherwise of the slot race.

Views of a bitter old man bahaha.

As i type - VK hasnt put up his usual GP tips for the Frid night meeting - so the reason i created this thread

I did spend about 70 minutes - looking at numerous replays Thurs Night - and all im analysing is the Wagin Meeting

The Market movers( re what they opened TAB.Com Thurs night and what they are now ) - well if you follow money - the 2 big shortners are Regal Aura $6 into $4.40 - and Fireball Friday in race 7 - $7.50 into $5

Just a few general comments before i give a couple of tips - because this is a detailed look at Wagin

Race 1 - Tritttrittbangbang - - its been a dissappointing horse in WA - when Harpley trained it - and Sugars drove it in Vic - it had a boom on it - its Melb form it wins this race by 50 metres - im not tipping it - the $3.50 is tempting - all i will say is - if it is ever going to do anything impressive in WA - then tonight is the night - in that field

(2) Some Trots punters including myself have a golden rule - never back pacers 1st up - especially if they havent got a trial- however again its not a tip - but in race 4 - Follow Rocknroll $4.80 - its 1st up from a spell thats why im not tipping it - but if it reproduces its form before the break - it destroys this field

(3) Race 2 - again just a comment on the Race - not a tip - the fave at $1.70 - i dont think it is much good -id love to take it on in a big way but i cant - the only horse i was interested in was Thats So Fetch at $7.50 - but the bottom line is - i have no luck whatsoever with Chris Playle so im passing

Now my 2 tips - and you probably think ive got the datboard with the 2 ive come up with - they are both small e/w - must emphasis that - there was nothing in the replays where you could confidendly have a real big bet on something

Race 6 El Jessie @ $19 - there are 5 chances in this race - they actually all ran in the same race at Narrogin 2 starts back . Alot of gunner horses in this race - it will simply come down to who gets the best trip and who steps best - didnt mind El Jessie 5th to Kimble a couple of starts back - held its ground ok in a slick last qtr

Race 7 - as mentioned the big money has come for Fireball Friday - i had a serious look at the $7.50 - however its last start at Bridgetown beaten 4 metres sat behind the leader soft run - Isaidboo - same race well back 3 wide w/out cover beaten 24 metres - so to me - not much between those 2 runs . It did run 4th at Pinj 1.58 - it gave Regal Aura a length start top of straight and narrowly beat it - so even though its at cricket score odds its not hopeless in this race . The fave 1.35 - new trainer - ordinary trial - so so 1st up run - so to me there is doubt. Thus i had a small e/w bet on Isaidboo ( with the win boost ) @ $100 win odds and $19 the place

Good luck to anyone investing at the WaginTrots Tonight

And it has ended up being a hotch potch of Level 6 (how does it get a start?) to in form level 10 (some without a concession) and a level 9 is 2nd emergency (with a claim).

Ernie Manning notes the passing of 91 year old Harry Miller in today's West, affectionately known to all the old timers as The Padre.

When I was very young, we had a recalcitrant Crown Refrigerator which although ridiculously unreliable, was a step up from the ice box with large blocks of ice delivered in hessian bags. As the only refrigeration mechanic known to mankind, it was Harry's formidable task to keep the Crown working. It invariable froze everything solid or didn't work at all, there was no in between. Harry was a frequent visitor with his pork pie fedora perched on his bald pate, small in stature and looking for the world like the Padre from a Bush Christening (In the outer Barcoo where churches are few et al)

This was around the time he had Jackie Scott, a Pacing Cup and Easter Cup winner as an aged gelding along with numerous Free For All wins. At the same time, Mary Major, a daughter of Jackie Scott (by U Scott who was prematurely gelded shortly after siring Mary) was also racing and in fact, father and daughter often successfully raced on the same night in the early 1960's. Mary Major won 10 races in town at a time that Harry had another good horse in Cotton Tail. In fact, Harry and his brood of about 13 kids (someone will correct me if I am wrong but that's pretty close I reckon, Mrs Miller was seemingly always "in child") had horses running all over the place out on Welshpool road, Wattle Grove, on a bend as you began the ascent to Kalamunda.

Mary Major, a roan mare herself, produced the grey Triple Flash, who may have been completely white when he won a Bunbury Cup for Joe Miller amongst other wins, and one of Harry's last horses in Seba. I can also recall Tommy Ambrose and Don Design winning a lot of races. Green (of course) with white sleeves were his colours and although the complexities of the huge Miller family are way too convoluted for me to follow, yes, of course he is related to the rest of the racing Miller clan...JJ, Jim, Dashing Dan and all the rest of them. He was a good little bloke old Harry, he enabled us kids to have Ice Cream in the freezer, yes, it was homemade and not a patch on Peter's Neopolitan but it was icecream, I was amazed to see he was still alive, I thought he had popped off ages ago. Another link in the chain broken.

February 24th 1973, 47 horses contested 4 heats of the WA Derby, 3 heats of 12 and one heat of 11 horses. Seeded heats from the looks of things. Heat 1 to Haddock (L.J.Robinson) over Beau Box (Alan Woodworth) and Park Royale (Jim Schrader). Heat 2 to Beau Rivage (Ron Buswell) over Sibon (L.Waldrodt) and Scottish Arania (Mick Taylor). Heat 3 to Parking (Val Pereira) over Royal Force (Jack Retzlaff) and Mathinna (Dennis Richards) and Heat 4 to Happy Creed (Whistle Jones) over Opal Park (Ray Grantham) and Lord Frisco (Reg Denney). Some class there, future Inters Heat winners, Miracle Mile, fast class winners, future sires etc.

Question is could we rustle up 47 horses to compete in Derby heats nowadays? And if we could, would the current gurus run them? Did having the heats generate any interest in the lead up to the final? Were the public engaged and did they attend? Did it generate any headlines in the daily papers?

Meanwhile, the dog whistlers giving their own distorted take on reality continue to pull the strings.

For the record, Royal Force won the $7,500 final a week later from Parking, Happy Creed and Haddock in front of a bumper crowd. On the same night, future star Zaruma could only manage 4th behind Mussa Petricevich's Dormans Son in the 2 year old race. I think they had a handle on race programming and handicapping back then. And the venue was presented in pristine condition.

Should be working at home - but i cant be bothered at the moment - rather discuss Trotting

So want to know your best winning bet was- where you have got massive overs for one reason or another

I was seriously pro punting from late 70s to early /mid 80s - why was i pro punting - well Perth was a depression - didnt matter what Professional qualifications you had or trade certificates - there was horrendous unemployment - i can remember lining up in a Scarborough street - a builder was building a duplex their- advertised in the West for someone to clean it - to take it - to what do they call it - fitout or lock up stage - 200 people lined in a queue for that job - he eventually came out - and said i only need 2 people - so the other 200 went home - so to me it was a simple decision - pro punt or otherwise be evicted and starve . I had 2 shots at ProPunting - 1st time no good - undisciplined - 2nd time round - highly disciplined - brilliantly prepared - and won and banked some very nice money

To set the scene back then - for people who wernt around then - there was massive overs and cream everywhere if you knew what your were doing - simply because WA was like a different country to the E/States - even Melb and Syd were like different countries - so there were big gaps in the information - thus if you knew what your doing - there were beautiful overs to cash in on

I will give you a general example which i didnt profit from so you can get a feel for the massive overs on offer - then i will give you my actual example

Early 80s WA had a great galloper/sprinter by the name of Coal Pak - trained way down south - beautiful blue colours from memory - it won the time honoured Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield - so a very prominent/prestigious race . Alby Smith jumped off it for some bizarre reason - and Harry White took the winning ride - i can still hear Collins call ( no pictures back then ) but at the top of straight he said " Oh heres Coal Pak " - it just romped in - i wont give an official margin - because you can bet London to a brick on - that someone will Nitpick me on that

Anyhow John McGrath the now politician - he use to be a racing journalist - he was on 6PR - i allways liked John - he gave the WA dividends - now WA had a stand alone TAB - so did Vic - now they were 50cent units - so again i dont want to be nitpicked on this - but say he said ( in todays $1 units ) Coal Pak paid $6 - he then said in an exasperated voice - " Look if you like one of ours ( a WA horse ) - youve got to back it over their - its paid in $14 in Melb" That is a prime example of the fantastic overs you could get- if you knew what you were doing and backed horses in the right place - and it was an Oakleigh plate for goodness sake - a very prominent race

Now my actual example - it was a race at Moonee Valley harness race around 83/84 - now to set the scene again - when the Valley trots were on Frid night - the only 2 - interstate trotting meetings that the WA TAB would cover / bet on were HaroldPark and Moonee Valley - there was nothing during the week or Sat - there was no Ballarat - Bendigo - Geel - Penrith or Bathurst - absolutely nothing - they didnt even on Albion Park or Globe Derby - thus there was very little form/information - that was beautiful for someone well prepared

I had Melb Truth newspaper and the sporting Globe newspapers hitting the ceiling in the spare room - the S/Globe would show pictures of the Valley Trots at the bell and at the finish - plus the sectional times -very important information . But also i use to duck into this City Newsagency 3-4 times a week - he had basically had a hole in the wall in a City arcade - and he got in daily the interstate newspapers - he said to me - look mate if they are not in by lunchtime they have missed the plane and you wont get them to the next day - which are no use - but 80% of the time he got them that day - and they were vital - full form guides and betting market

Anyhow ive got the Melb Sun paper for a Fridaynight M/Valley trots - there was a horse in the last race called Parading - a poor mans Lincoln Storm - very strong - it had poor numerical form but it was a certainty- John McClean trained/drove it - he had good horses like Sammy Karamea and Riverlea Jack . Now remember the West Australian newspaper even up to 4 years ago - they had those stupid odds re country trots - well imagine what odds they had 40 years ago - when they were only covering 2 interstate trotting meetings a week

They had 10-1 Parading - ive got the Melb Sun - the price is 5 to 2 ON - take 2 to 5 $1.40 in todays betting and it was an absolute certainty

There were 2 interstate Trots bookies at GP - standing not far far from Chariots actually - a tall skinny bloke - only manning the stand - i saw him working in a bankone day - there was another bookie - looked Maltese -bit of a hunch back - wore a bit of a jacket - he bet before the call - and he put up 10-1 Parading . Now at that point you want $500 on it at that price - but even he would wise up and you would get nothing - so i said $60 Parading - a 50 and 10 dollar note i had - and he accepted the bet $600 to $60 Parading . Three to 4 minutes later he must have felt a total goose - because the 1st call came over and it was 2 to 5

I had a little trani - listened to the race on the lawn area - Brian Martin called the race - and he was on Parading big time - and the horse had a run where it could have got beat - he said - boy Parading is taking an eternity to get the death - took about a lap - but in the home straight - i can remember him saying Parading just races away - won by plus 5 metres

Now that is a prime example of the overs you could get back then - for a $60 bet i should have won $24 - but instead won $600 - they were sensational - exciting days back then - limited information flow -huge lack of form - perfect situation to cash in . Now it is 40 years ago - and hopefully ive got most of that right - because Jay Jay will be scurrying off to his record books to try to nail a few errors in it

But the thread title - if you have got massive overs in a winning bet - then tells us your story

PP reports...Boncel Benjamin came from obscurity and claimers to win last year's Inter Dominion a race traditionally won by champions. Benjamin is no champion. He is a legless walker. Jason Grimson who trained it is a disgraceful drug cheat.

My comment.. Has it won a race since? Duffy now the trainer. Last recently beaten 43 metres at $151. Never closer than 12 metres including beaten 25 metres in last 5 starts prices of $26 and $51. No Inter Dominion winner can boast that post Inter Dom form record.
