I've had something on Machnifocent at the big odds as well if it's run upside down.

In the Stand I think Trooping Of The Colour can track Aussie Scooter throughout and be dangerous at 20/1.

R7 I thought Handsandwheels might be able to return to form. They might go Indian file and then Glenledi Chief pops off, DeCampo can follow him or stick to the pegs. Just feel like with 300m to go he's going to look like having something to give.

Good luck all.

Fake Handicapping System

It is now four years since the HWOE based system was introduced. Amongst great angst (changes is always confronting), there was great promise of reform and progress in providing exciting, high turnover, like against like competitive racing with far fewer short priced favorites, I think you would have been hard pressed to find anyone opposed to the suggestion that the old M/C/R system with its proliferation of penalty free races had done it's time and that change was needed. HWOE was the solution we were told (although I don't think anyone foresaw the progression to the $L5 Conditioned racing that is fundamentally what we have today).

The much celebrated story of previous year's Derby winners rocking up, and beating up, a field of very moderate open aged maiden horses in a CO at Pinjarra or wherever perhaps more than anything crystalised everyone's view that the magical realignment of a successful juveniles handicap, to that of a battle weary outer country maiden 1 second after midnight on August 30 of each year, was unacceptable. Many 3 year olds, and their owners, got a huge free kick with the realignment to classification C0 the second they turned 4, effectively handing them retrospective penalty free racing as a 2 and 3 year old that had our counterparts in the thoroughbred world rolling on the floor in laughter every time anyone from harness even mentioned the word "handicapping". Successful owners and breeders of quality juveniles were in "handicap clover', a position that 4 years later with HWOE handicapping has changed very little, and may in fact have been enhanced.

With mounting complaints from some that horses were moving through their levels too quickly (and hastening their departure to North America), and we are talking about successful, talented, winning horses here, not loyal old country scrubbers, win penalties have been adjusted so that instead of incurring your full winning stake against your HWOE (Harness WIN only earnings), there is now only a part penalty to pay. There was always a concessions applicable for 2 year olds (25% win penalty) and 3 year olds (75% win penalty) from the get go but the recent changes have handed out even bigger free kicks left right and centre. The applicable penalties across all stakes levels for 3 year olds (incorporating the 75% discount) are now as such:

Community/Country/Mid Week races

$6000 stake race Win Stake $3167 , HWOE penalty $2249.25. Penalty percentage is 71%

$9,000 stake race Win stake $4993 , HWOE penalty $3375 Penalty Percentage 67.5%

Metro Races:

$20250 stake race Win Stake $11,745 , HWOE penalty $6750 Penalty Percentage 57%

$50,000 stake race Win Stake $29,000 HWOE Penalty $10,125 Penalty Percentage 35%

$100000 stake race Win Stake $58,000 HWOE Penalty $10125 Penalty Percentage 17.5%

$150,000 stake race Win Stake $87,000 HWOE Penalty $13,500 Penalty Percentage 15.5%

$200,000 stake race Win Stake $116,000 HWOE Penalty $13,500 penalty Percentage 11.6%

So, the higher the quality of your horse, the better the concessions with battling horses and their owners copping win penalties at Busselton or Collie that are, for assessment purposes, seven times higher than the Derby winner. Hugely encouraging for the big end of town but devastating for most horses and owners. Just how absurd has this system become that a horse that has won potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars emerges as a 4 year old with an artificially low HWOE. Great work if you can get it, and a benefit that I don't foresee the current beneficiaries giving up without exercising every bit of influence they can muster. It would take another 3 posts to divulge the nonsense going on in the $L5 races where plodders at all levels keep getting dive bombed by quality horses (granted out of form) such that good types with $350k in life time earnings can over time drop back into a $L5 $4k race and beat up $20k life time plodders at Narrogin, and in many cases, have the chance of drawing gate 1 in a RBD.. So much for "like against like" competitive racing. Michael Radley and friends can rave on all they like about Gloucester Park and it's brand being "turnover central" in WA but the reality is that it is turnover central for five eights of bugger all as harness turnover shrinks into oblivion as a percentage of overall betting. The decline in the last 10 years is far more than alarming, it is way beyond that, and the snorefest leader biased racing at this out out of date, undersized metro track is a major contributing factor.

And the solution doing the rounds this week, unconfirmed of course but it has been on the grapevine for a while now, is that there is a proposition floating around the Halls Of Power to further "rationalise" Harness Racing by reducing racing to just 5 tracks.....with the outer clubs (Busso, Collie, Williams etc) being granted a single boutique meeting each season. Racing only at GP, Pinjarra, Bunbury, Northam and one of Narrogin, Wagin and Albany will please some but others will signify the move as time to call in the Harness racing undertakers. "RWAA...Growing The Industry". Bah humbug.

Slip raised the issue of unbelievable strike rates on another thread concerning Emma Stewart's dominance in Victoria. But looking back and dragging some old stats out from an era that particularly interested me in WA, the late 1970's through to the 1980's, as always, owner support has a lot to do with the outcome. Now without knowing all the personal circumstances of individuals, and with Macau probably throwing a statistical spanner into a few works, case studies of the likes of Val Pereira and Ben Geerson are a bit interesting. Not the two most successful ever trainers and drivers but certainly very prominent in an era when GP was the place to be prior to it becoming the somewhat uninhabited wasteland that it is today (for whatever reason, although everyone has their own view on that).

In season 1967/68, both Val and Ben were pretty much unheard of. Just the one winner (all tracks, all meetings) all season for VP, Nick Star on June 28th at Richmond Raceway. Ben failed to trouble the scorers that season when compared to the likes of other non "top guns" (Schrader Lindau, Coulson, Pollock and co) like Alan Woodworth with 29 winners and part time trainer driver/full time farrier Laurie Robinson with his 12 winners.

In 1968/69, Pereira landed 7 winners as Boronia Bay (5 wins, two in town) teamed up with Nick Star, whilst Ben had the four successes with Dew Renown, one of Clive Skippers horses providing 3 of them at Bunbury, Kellerberrin and Williams.

1969/70 saw Pereira starting to emerge....15 winners (9 metro) with Boronia Bay (4 metro), Sanello (2 metro), Gold Borer, Oro Dior and future star Dawns Glory all hitting the board and 1970/71 was much the same with 13 wins coming from Dawns Glory, Beethoven, Cavan Beauty and prince Caspian. Jump forward to 1973/74 and there were 16 winners but a better class of horse started to emerge....Parking, Dormans Son, Candy Boy, Lord Anstey, daring Shell and Eringa Bay kicking in. It was the start of big owner Warren Brady supporting the stable in a big way and by 1976/77, the landscape had changed. Victory Oro, prolific winner Grand Slam, Adios Foyle, Minor Control, Timely Hostess (yes, not a typo although she would later be associated with Bill Duffy), Rapid city and Hal Tempa contributed to 32 wins, 14 at metro tracks. And in 1977/78, the above were joined by Kirkie and the rising star Whispering Campaign.

At the same time down at McKinley Lodge in Byford, Ben Geerson with strong owner support had emerged as a serious trainer, particularly of young horses with Lucky Kinley, Lady Ketch and the formidable colt Dillons Return hitting the headlines in 1971/72, and in 1977/78, horses such as Paltrina, Warwick Kid, Melton Neptune, Sharach, Strockton, Prince Return and teh brilliant Golden Slipper winner Mark Tabella had my old friend smiling broadly. Don't ever be fooled by his gruff manner, he was one of the most amusing and dry witted people I have ever encountered but I digress.

In 78/79, the Pereira stable kept producing...Patrick Neptune (4), Nandina Skipper (3) and Kirkie (3) added to the prolific Hal Tempa, Grand Slam and Whispering Campaign (10 wins for the season including the Derby and 2nd in the Australian Derby) to help tally up 28 wins with 22 in the metro area. Ben also collected 19 wins and dozens of major placings with Prince Return, Melton Neptune, Sharach, Irish Rowan, Mark Tabella and Warwick Kid.

But in 1979/80, the winners for Pereira started to dry up, just 13 with 5 from Whispering Campaign being the best, and 1980/81 saw just 5 wins with the emerging Tahitian Dancer winning two races in town. Now, I think this time period coincided with Macau Trotting starting up and Val Pereira had a significant involvement in that venture, buying horses for Stanley Ho but I am not across the detail of all that and records from Macau are hard to locate. Others may be able to add to the story here.

Meanwhile, Ben Geerson was rollicking along...Wanbidgee Way, Melton Neptune, Prince Of Orange, Den Helder, Hindu Way, Wallara Way, Tout, Suda San....In general terms, Ben backed in relatively unproven first season sires trusting his renowned eye for type at minimal outlay as the basis of his purchasing at sales.... and 1980/81 saw 24 wins and 81/82 was little different with all the above plus Iluka Thor, Quick Cross, Dynamic Call and Boss Neptune to the fore, whilst the relative downturn for Pereira continued, just the 7 winners with Tahitian Dancer joined by Liebchen Lady and Matai Bret. Was Macau still dominating his time and energy? I don't know but by 1982/83, fortunes were rising...Tahitain Dancer, Liebchen Lady, Elteei, Astrability and star Gay Boyden made for a successful 27 winners. Of course, all the stories were afloat, with magical chinese potions and all manner of other conspiracy theories being mumbled from behind hands but these were high priced, capable horses that bought about the 20 metro wins including the Derby and the 3 and 4 Year old championship. I well remember one of the "smarties" being sure that the hippy drug LSD was being used but honestly, can you seriously imagine that scenario? The coloured lights of the new Matagarup Bridge would play havoc with the horses these days, back straight interference would take on an entirely different aspect.

There were a few others who shall remain nameless that emerged at the time but disappeared equally as quickly after a few positive swabs stopped them abruptly. One hitherto unheard of trainer knocked up 17 wins in quick time and had another burst of prominence in 1983/84 before sliding back into disqualified obscurity shortly after.

1983/84 saw no winners for VP from June 21, 1983 until November 5, 1983 but the season finished with a rush courtesy of Tahitian Dancer, Gay Boyden (another 7 wins to add to his 6 from the previous season), Smarda and Astrability tallying up 20 wins, 15 in the metro area. Ben continued on with Loyal Batchelor, Wendy Lobell, Dynamic Call, Golden Rand and Fellow Kinley but the prominence for both was starting to wane. As the saying goes, ebbs and flows, peaks and troughs, owner dependent and probably, the daily grind eventually dulling even the most enthusiastic. Without absolute top horses winning the better stake races, it ain't easy work. Having a steady supply line of huge numbers of top bred stock is a factor that cannot be under estimated in Emma Stewart's success. Success breeds success....until the owner runs out of money or interest.

The time slots for Friday make it hard for drivers....last at Bunbury at 5.13pm, first at GP at 5.28pm.....for someone like Emily, a dash up Forest Highway (and probably hoping that Seven No Trumps (emergency in race 7 at 7.24pm) doesn't get a start. Is this an occupational helath and safety issue, and if as is commonly stated that Sky set the race times according to TV slots, have we lost that much control over our industry that drivers had to do a mad dash up the Highway and barring owning a helicopter, have to exempt themselves from taking engagements in the first 6 races? Something not quite right here.

Bizarre meeting last night....what a waste of of a day of travel and a tank of diesel. Walked in the door and was handed a sheet of A4 paper saying that because the WATA does not have any Bylaws regarding procedure for Special Meetings, the Committee had "received advice" (from whom not disclosed), and remembering you only receive advice when you ask for it, that "no motion can be put forward at a Special General Meeting".

My immediate thought was why bother having one if that is the case, why weren't the members informed of this prior to the meeting and what in the hell was I doing bothering attending?

The information sheet went on to say that because of the absence of any bylaws dealing with Special general Meetings, the WATA would be deferring to the Corporations Act which states that only "An individual Member who has at least 5% or more of the votes" is able to put a resolution or "At least 100 members who have a right to vote at the meeting" are required to put a resolution and that notice of the motion has to be put to the WATA and a copy of the motion provided to all members prior to the meeting. As members only have one vote per member, no one member has 5% or more of the votes.

Furthermore, the sheet stated WATA Bylaw 3.5 states 'The affairs of the Association shall be managed exclusively by the committee" and that "Members cannot put forward any motion/resolution which is with respect to the management of the Association including the negotiation of the sale of Gloucester Park".

What a complete farce? There are mechanisms in place to call a Special General Meeting, which were met in terms of teh number of signatures etc required but once the meeting is called, it can't even pass a resolution whether it be binding or non binding because the WATA doesn't have bylaws to cover it? Anyone who signed the request for a SGM was treated like garbage and if there aren't any bylaws, then get off your backside and write some. and show some respect to the members....all members....not just the chosen few.

Fair doogs to the management, very well played, they completely blindsided anyone daring to have an alternative view, the meeting was effectively neutered from the moment we walked in the door. Democracy at work? I think not.

So …. They announced the result of the 375 members who were entitled to vote. They needed 66.67% participation for the vote to be valid and authorise them to sell any part of Gloucester Park.
So what did they do ….. they sent out a TOTAL of about 675 ballots to the 375 members …… essentially sending out BOTH electronic AND postal ballots to over 300 members and saying (in their FAQ sheet) “it is important you only vote once” ????‍♂️????????. So earlier this week a member asked to view the postal and electronic ballots which GPHR are required to keep for30 days after close of poll in event that any member requests to scrutinise them. So what was the result of the scrutiny ?? …… there wasn’t a result ….. Mr Radley, in conjunction with Returning Officer said “no, you can’t perform the scrutiny check”. No viewing is permissible.

Ernie Manning grabbed me the other night and asked for names of past Trots Bookies around the time of betting supervisor Jack Ivankovich. Obviously, he hadn't been conversing with that very upright bastion of the community who tells me I am the definition of a miserable old man, such a qualified and well assessed opinion that I immediately made a booking down at the local Headspace.

Anyway, I digress. I have compiled a list but the timelines and location become a bit blurred with time (and age) and some of these may or may not have been there at the time, some might have been gallops only operators but if others can assist, that would be welcome. Not sure what Ernie has in mind but he apparently does a history segment on some radio station that I can't pick up down here. I seem to recall a ring of roughly 30 bookies, maybe more on big nights with some of the gallops operators doing double duty. Feel free to pick the list to pieces. Here goes.

Manual Kalaf, Steve Mulhall, Ian (and Sylvia) Boylan, Ross Cooper, George Truscott, Terry Boylan, George Davies, Joe Rosich, Sam Nicholaides, Eric Mack, Bill Mack, Rod Evans, Don Mack, Francy Friedlander, Eric Wilson, Brett lenton, Bruce Atkinson, Ray Manolas, John Sarre, Clive Hills, Gordon Lennox, Kieran Glynn, Ray Lucev, Bob Howatt, Neville Hebbard, Charlie Osmetti, Rod Wilson, Kim Hunter, Roy Willison, Spiro Mallis, Kingsley Sanford, Lew Lewis.
