A quick check of the early races ....and they are pari-mutual figures only and obviously only part of the overall turnover figures....reveals pool sizes that are the lowest I can ever recall. The 10.14am start, which is patently absurd for any trainers having to travel from outside the immediate surrounds of Bunbury.......Perth based trainer in race 1 would have to be on the road at 7.00am minimum to be on course 1 hour before the first....appears to be too early for most punters. Those win pools are smaller than the old Non TAB pools of the 1970's when I was working for the NE Districts Council at Merredin, Wylie, Keller and Trayning.  And, in passing, with the early start, who is going to attend to the working of the trainers other horses back at home base? Win pools of under $2000 and place pools of less than $1000 are outrageously small and are way less than the recognised betting "blackhole" time slots of Saturday Night and Sunday Afternoon. So unless the corporates are holding absolutely huge amounts, the claim of a 20% boost are at least questionable based on today's figures.

Anyway, back to the numbers, they do have a bit of a spike after midday but are still nothing to get excited about. Now, 5 of the nine races were no 3rd dividend races, is that part of the reason? Early markets showed 9 odds on favourites but one drifted leaving just the 8. Is that part of the reason? Of the 9 races, 7 were won by slightly better than bank interest odds on pops, so the races were basically uncompetitive. Is that part of the reason?

Anyway, great to see the new model being so successful, hitting it's marks and delivering an exciting and marketable product. We are in very good hands.

Race 1. The highest assessed horse #1 Pradason (Level 10) with the highest HWOE ($48k) and a winner of its last two, gets into a LT $40k race for Level 7/9 under an also eligible clause of not having won a race worth more than $14,400. It fortuitously draws gate 1 against all of it's lower assessed rivals. Now it may not win but it sticks out like a tall leprechaun.

Race 4. Big class dropper here, #1 Jack Farthing Level 15, HWOE $120k  (along with to a lesser extent the other level 15 horses Tommy Be Good and Bracken Sky but tricky gates in 5 and 7 make it hard for them), dropping back from FFA to the LT$25k race. The little known AE clause (AE Horses that have been Preferred Eligible Acceptors, other than Late
Nominations, for the Conditioned Pace (RL14) at THIS meeting and who
have not gained a start at this meeting) is the clue as to how they gain entry to the race instead of starting in the under subscribed FFA because the conditioned pace referred to is not happening this week, assume it fell over. Therefore, Jack slides into the L525k race and randomly draws barrier 1. Again, it may not win but an all up from #1 race 1 into #1 race 4 is more than likely to succeed.

Race 8 #1 McArdles Gem, a level 13, HWOE $95k, is a huge class dropper (along with Mattjestic Star but it is disadvantaged drawing out in 9). Some opponents are only level 6 and level 7 horses, and I haven't been following McArdles form of late but he is able, and the connections have read the play and placed him superbly for along period of time. Ironically, if Mattjestic charges across it could be McArdles undoing but if you haven't nodded off by race 8, the all up of #1 in race 1, race 4 and race 8 may cheer you out of your slumber.

Invariably, egg on my face the likely outcome, no problem, I carry a readily accessible facecloth but the promise of less odds on favourites, competitive, exciting "like versus like" racing has in my mind as much credibility as a Clive Palmer election promise. Is there any jurisdiction anywhere in the world that is flourishing without proper handicapping?. The Gordon Geckos would suggest that the current system suits their purposes perfectly.

But why is the question? Is the programming in dire need of a review, has the timing of 2 year old "classics" been thrown out by the change in the season date, are the 4 and 5 horse two year old races the new norm,  are the races not being programmed according to the levels of the horse population in work or has the horse population fallen to such an extent that the numbers are just not there? The much heralded New Business Model was to be the elixir that fixed all.

Numerous recommendations to improve governance, all the usual bumpf you expect from these reports, of course the government accepts all the recommendations, there is already improved behaviour from management and in reality, nothing will change other than they will install a different brand of washing machine.

Sadly, the recommendation most needed, that of an action plan for 15 D9 dozers to push the cesspit back into the Swan River as landfill was absent from the Commissioners report. The Racing Industry should voluntarily provide the bulldozers free of charge because it's fall from grace and profitability, and in the case of harness racing, its unsustainable and inevitable journey to being a cottage industry, can be pinned wholly and solely on that dreadful day when Dallas Dempster and Brian Burke signed off on that deal. Even worse, we lost Hamburger Hill in the process.
