No doubt, others had worse Fridays .....and I am laughing about it now....sort of....but sometimes, you should never leave the house.

Left home at 7.30am Friday morning for the trek to Perth, armed with boxes of fine Southern Forest produce to deliver to friends and then head to GP to watch my "battlers"...a term "tweeted" by a leading trainer to describe my erstwhile steeds in what I thought was a display of unbridled arrogance....but you get that, so moving on. Completed my "Con The Fruiterer" duties to appreciative friends including the seemingly ageless and wonderful Hall Of Famer John Cooper and it was all downhill from there.

"Battler" number 1 draws an impossible gate 8 and runs down the track, battler number 2 is first up and they go like scalded cats in a very strange race running 1.55...and he finishes down the track, and after backing the stables best for the night which got bloused out in a tight photo, it was off to Steelo's for a feed, and some clown who is the worse for wear spills his $7 pint all over my chicken parmi. I know when to call it quits ...but not before someone who should know better says to me "I suppose you'll be setting "battler number 2" for the Inters in New Zealand after that run JayJay"....he doesn't know how close he came to having one planted right on his copious beak but sanity prevailed, I kept walking and after exchanging farewells to friends and acquaintances, a brief process as they could all hold a mass meeting in a telephone box, I hit the road for the 3 and a half hour trip home....so I thought. Sailing down Canning Highway, a man in high viz steps out holding a luminous sign....my heinous crime, doing 64km/hr in a 60 zone....exit stage right another 100 bucks along with what little sense of humour remained.

A steely silence descends and soon enough, I am in Boyanup, ensconced in the thickest pea soup fog imaginable which continued all the way home......no chance of another speeding ticket, the normal 90 minute drive from Bunbury took two and a half hours and a 2.20am arrival in the driveway. I think completely knackered is the appropriate description.

A check of the post box Saturday morning reveals two items, the Water bill and the Council Rates....oh bewt....the Manjimup Shire sees fit to raise its rates more than double the inflation rate each year in order to NOT maintain the goat track that constitutes a road to my residence....wonderful value for money, local government, truly wonderful.

Then Saturday night, having virtually given Smackwater Jack (NR 50) away to SA after the poxy HWOE nonsense made him a money pit in WA, I watched with a fair degree of chagrin as he bolted in at Globe Derby Park for his new and very appreciative owner. At least someone is smiling and good for her...not leaving the house today.....other than heading to the fuel pump to replace a totally wasted tank of diesel.....in readiness for next weeks Friday Night Funpalace at the Park. Moving on.

Was watching Pinjarra today, Dissertation specifically, and I started thinking (never a good idea many would say) about the days when the West had dedicated Trotting journos like Matchy, Mushroom and Gino and how quickly they would have been on to the Patrick Gilroy story.

Now I am not completely across the details but Mr Gilroy, as I understand things, is a gentleman of age who is not enjoying the best of health these days. He has been breeding horses for decades and decades and currently Craig Abercromby is looking after them. When I first noticed breeder P.B Gilroy was when the very handy horse Marquisard started racing and winning and I did a perfunctory pedigree search of the family and found very little of note to even vaguely recommend it. Then, in the yearling sale catalogue from 2018, a colt by Well Said and a half brother to Marquisard was listed and passed in at $30k. My notes in the catalogue are a less than complimentary "Dreaming - 1 winner in 6 generations". That colt of course is Dissertation, another knife through my dismal reputation of picking out yearlings.

Later on, when speaking to Craig, he told me that Mr Gilroy had never seen one of his horses win at GP and he arranged one night to collect Mr Gilroy, take him to the track and watch Marquisard in a race that Craig thought was very winnable. Alas, the horse won and Mr Gilroy was over the moon and was then taken home.

The dam of Marquisard and Dissertation is the unraced Art Major mare LeChambon (Mr Gilroy doesn't muck around with also ran sires having been to all the top liners over the years). However, Le Chambon's family must be one of the most unsuccessful families in the stud book. Her dam Di Bravura was unraced and produced 3 non winning fillies. Di Bravuras dam Sempre Grazie produced 4 fillies from 9 attempts at stud, all non winners and only one of whom (Di Bravura) even made it to the track. Sempre Grazies dam Orfana produced a colt and two fillies from 5 attempts, none of whom raced. Orfana's dam Emerald Fire produced 7 foals of which only one made it to the track for 1 unplaced run. Emeralds Fire's dam Marcasite produced an amazing 17 foals and amongst them was 4 winners, the best of which was the $27k stakes winner Rusty Thor who was a 1971 drop, the first sign of any life in the pedigree......anywhere....until Marquisard and Dissertation defied 6 generations of nothing to become very handy horses. Alas, hope springs eternal for all hobby breeders and heres hoping the Abercrombies can bring continued success and joy to Mr Gilroy. Good job Craig and Robert.

One of my pet gripes is horses that win over the weekend and
become ineligible for future engagements remain in the field until Monday morning.
Case in point Rosies Delight won at Bunbury Saturday night but was still in the
fields for Pinjarra after 8:00am today in a race where it was clearly
ineligible.

Punters and bookmakers are doing ratings, speed maps and
markets well before this time and a betting market was displayed Sunday afternoon
with Rosies Ideal as a $1.60 favourite. If you fancied 2nd favourite
Independence Rose and backed it at $3.20 you would have finished up with $1.28
after deductions where its price is now $1.55.

When doing my ratings I assume the role of handicapper and
remove the ineligible horse from the field. Betting agencies do not have that privilege
as they must display a price unless the horse is officially scratched.

Surely with the technology available in 2019 it does not
require someone to be physically in the RWWA office to make the scratching official
on Monday morning. I have raised this situation on a number of occasions
without success.

She was my Grandmother and I am interested in finding out about her career, particularly how the trotting world perceived her, her noteworthy achievements as a trainer/breeder/owner. Anything of particular interest surrounding her career. I know very little, and because her and my grandfather have both passed away it is difficult for me to find any information about this.

Was she considered successful? Did she train any horses that broke records or does she hold any records to this day? Was she respected? Was she inspirational? Are female trainers rare? And if so, what made her break into a male dominated field do you think?

Thanks in advance, any piece of information small or detailed will be greatly appreciated. I feel like the horse/trotting world was not known by us, her family, and it is a huge part of her and her life that is missing without knowing it about her.

Kind regards,
Kylie

The Tab's place betting odds overall have gone from bad to worse - an ordinary horse like that Smo tonight at Northam - was 40/1 to win ( should've been 140/1 ) and Tabtouch odds a place ? $3 that's 2/1 a place about a horse 40/1. The list is endless.

Horses 125/1 to win and just 5/1 a place with no odds on fave in the race. They can bet what place odds they like but if your foolish enough to fall into them good luck.

Place betting - should be around a quarter of the odds. Pacer's are now 25/1 to win and odds on a place. How can these place odds they throw up time after time be justified.

Bookmakers of the past would have been laughed off track - high tote takeout rates - with rounding down of dividends - fixed odds markets going up at an increasing high %, place odds of 1/10th or 1/20th of the win odds. Killing the game.

One market one night had three horses all at $1.01 a place 1/100. Get real.

The drive - well leave that up to others. Back to last and basically for a 1/25 shot - never looked a hope.

Interesting race on Saturday Night. It has come along way since its first incarnation in 1968....a standing start over a mile worth $1365 with trainer/drive Vince Chalker successful with Sordice rating 2.14.4. In the only other standing start version of the race one year later, Little Edward started from the 12 yard handicap for Phil Coulson rating 2.9.0. The first mobile edition of the race in 1970 went to Dollars Double rating a blistering 2.12.5, again for Phil Coulson. Since those early days, the race has blossomed and produced dozens of champions.....the first "imported" champions like Zaruma (John Deane), Full Draw (Les Marriott), Mark Tabella (Ben Geerson) and Whispering Campaign (Val Pereira) before the incomparable junior San Simeon restored order in 1979 for Lou Austin. Was there a better winner than Chandon in for FRK and (quiz night question) trainer Ainslie Williams in 1992? Mitch McGuire currently holds the race record of 1.55.9 over the extended 2130m journey, just in front of Franco Edwards 1.56.0 from last year.

Time will tell if there are any future champs in this years edition which interestingly includes a maiden getting into the filed in advance of the two emergencies who do have winner status. Jasper drawing the ace would appear very hard to beat but I suspect it will be a pressure race with a few prepared to have a real crack in an even field. Major Martini from gate 11 to get a good run into the race and is close to the best two year this season and I think it should win.

Just to mention one last time - 4.5k not won on the final race - where has that Jackpot component gone ?
Race 1 Gloucester Park today - nope. Any race at GP - nope.
Will it be Gloucester Park Friday - nope.
Next Saturday night - nope.
How about next Monday at Pinjarra - nope.

Money lost by punter's ( a lot of them in WA ) at approx 5 o'clock on a Monday - should be given the opportunity to have a crack at the next available WA trot meeting or where the money wasn't collected at - Pinjarra the following week.
This money is most likely allocated to Eastern States racing events down the track or eastern states trotting also somewhere down the track.

If this 4.5k is added to WA Pacing how about Tabcorp or the WA Tab being more transparent and actually telling the public when and where the 4.5k not collected at Pinjarra yesterday is going.

They say turnover is important - a 4.5k carryover going into Gloucester Park today or Pinjarra next Monday or any WA trot meeting in between is a good way to start.

In an era of amazing technology and communication - the WA trot punter on final race Jackpots and or Quaddies is being kept in the dark. Tabcorp come out of the darkness and into the light of 2019.

WA Tab you have staff - how about using that wonderful invention - the telephone - call Tabcorp and find out where this sum of money is being allocated to.
Have enquired at both over time - reply basically "um not sure". It's nearly 2020 - is it really good enough ?

R1: Robb Stark. Looks a good race for him with some pace early from the 1&2. I will be taking him and Absolution who I am hoping can work forward and get the 1,1 on President Mach to lead my novelties.

R2: Robert The Bruce. Mighty Flying deal very vulnerable of getting crossed. I think Mister Rollins can cross him and expect Robert to take it up off him, backing both at cricket score odds.

R3: Athabascan. Should really be tipping Four Starzz Fourza but that short off one good run with his tendency to muck up the start, I'd much rather have a small ticket ES on Athabascan for some entertainment.

R4: Major Trojan. Good to see him back, I'm going to have something very small Hy Leexciting in the quad as a saver.

R5: Maras Ace Man. The only one that I thought had the speed to bother him at the start was Courage Tells so he is a must for the quad too and worth a little saver. Disappointing for JayJay to draw where he has as he would have led from anywhere else but he is still right in it. I can't see Convert Denario breezing and winning and as a result am happy to take him on.

R6: Waylade. Very good race, he should work through nicely off the back so again just having something for an interest.

R7: El Jacko. Sitting just off them he is the best of the night. The other one that interest me here is Kiwi Legend who I thought with everyone wanting to stay in the moving line inside him might be able to dart straight across behind the leader.

R8: Mandy Joan. Is probably a decent price at the black figures.

That will see me out, good luck all.

If a horse opened at 1/2 or $1.50 he may have $2k on it. If it opened at 1/4 or $1.25 he was likely to have $8k on it. If it opened at even money he would shy away from it and not back it at all even if he thought it could win.

So much for requiring value before you bet.

He backed a lot of winners and survived for a long time but I was aware that the corporate bookmakers let him on for unlimited, which would suggest that overall he was a losing punter.

Stewards action against the driver of Ohoka Punter ...race was run in a new record mile rate:

Stewards opened an enquiry into the driving tactics adopted by Paul
Diebert (Ohoka Punter NZ). After beginning from barrier number seven,
Ohoka Punter NZ was exerted by Paul Diebert to clear the inside runners
and obtain the lead. Our Uncle Sam (Anthony Frisby) which was beaten
for the lead then moved off the back of Ohoka Punter NZ to challenge for
the lead, however Ohoka Punter NZ was allowed to run and held the lead.
The lead time of 75. 5secs for the 1071M from the 2680M start to the
mile equated to a 28: 3 sectional. As a result of the exertion placed on
Ohoka Punter NZ to lead, the gelding tired in the concluding stages to
finish in 10th position beaten in excess of 31 metres. These tactics
were in direct contrast to the manner in which Ohoka Punter NZ was
driven at its previous start when surrendering the lead in the early
stages and utilizing the sprint lane, to ultimately win the race, that
being the Sunshine Sprint. After consideration Paul Diebert was found in
breach of AHR Rule 149(2) for driving Ohoka Punter NZ in an
unacceptable manner in that the gelding was exerted beyond its
capabilities to be competitive in the finish. Paul Dieberts licence to
drive in races was suspended for 6 weeks to commence midnight Wednesday
24th July, 2019.

Foaled in NZ in 1991, I was the epitome of the tough standardbred and raced for years. My popularity pendulum swung from hero to villain with strings of picket fence wins interspersed with sustained periods of ordinary performances. My racing life started most inauspiciously qualifying as a late 3 year in NZ with an unspectacular 2.12.0 mile rate. A very moderate first up win as a late 3yo was followed by 6 unplaced runs before heading to WA with a record of 7 starts for 1 win and only $2665 in total stakes.

Entering a highly successful stable, I raced at midweeks with a 2nd to Upstanding Poplar before being slow away in winning a 2600m Pinjarra stand in slow time. 3 more country wins mixed with some non winning efforts had me labelled as an honest plodder but my next 12 starts resulted in a stunning 10 wins, 8 of them in a row....some picket fence.... with the last 3 being metro class Friday wins at headquarters. My profile had suddenly changed and I was now regarded as a horse of the future, albeit a late maturer.

However, my form then became very mixed as a 6 year old....8 unplaced runs before a Metro win, 6 unplaced runs then another Metro win and then another 6 failures before a win in a strong Narrogin Cup. 7 runs later and there was back to back wins in the Botra Cup and the Healthway Stakes , returning 6 runs later with a win in the Media Cup. By this stage, my reputation was a love hate deal with the punters. Taken to Kalgoorlie for the round, I ran a stout 1.58.8 in winning the Golden Mile and my last win in WA was a stand from 40m behind at Northam. All up in WA, I won 24 races and collected $150k in stakes at a time of a downturn in stakes.

Exported to the USA, I ended up with 49 career wins and 80 places for over $325k in stakes and a LTR of 1.52.8 after racing on for a long time.

Another Ayjay, pretty much uncompetitive in WA, placed 2nd in a claimer in SA today. Smackwater Jack also now domiciled over there. Are there any plans or thoughts to revive Claimers within the new handicap system and if so, what might the conditions look like? As I read things, it may be an opportunity to keep horses within the WA horse population and keep them racing. The exodus to the USA of the likes of Lady Del A Renta, Luis Alberto etc is a different issue...but claimers may offer something to owners of battling horses if the conditions were structured correctly, they seem to work over East.....or maybe I continue to" live in the past".

Very few get a look in on Cup Day in NZ......the only races the Purdon juggernaut don't win are the ones they haven't got a starter in.....trifectas, quinellas, all the big races, the rest are just left a few crumbs. Cop the run of Ultimate Sniper in the 3yo feature, crikey, 3 wide early, into the breeze, working his butt off with some super quick quarters and no problem, he just beats them up. Heissenberg did everything possible to beat him bar letting his tyres down and just got blown away. Such domination in many states and many codes at the moment, we are witnessing the corporatisation (Is that a word?...I dunno but you get my drift) of racing at the moment on a scale we have never seen. Time will tell whether that is a good or bad thing but backyard Bill and his homebred broodmare are being consigned to the history books......and I just booked one in for stallion servicing yesterday???? Yikes, what was I thinking?
