Last weekend, I went to a nearby agistment centre to pick up a friends horse...a lovely Auckland Reactor 2 year old that had fallen ill, fell away to near death and has been magnificently returned to spanking good health at what is basically horse heaven...anyway, that's beside the point but whilst I was there, I spotted a lovely mare and her striking foal, about to be weaned. This intelligent and sensible little bloke, by American Ideal, really caught my eye and I asked who the dam was. Aha, I knew the mare well and went yep, here is another Flying Under The Radar candidate. Because, as outstanding as this mare's record is, if you asked any afficionado of the game to name 20 top race mares of recent times, I doubt her name would appear...probably a wrong assumption but her name wouldn't have appeared automatically in any list I would have put together.

How's this for some data.....a 61% winning record with 19 wins, a 90.3% win or place record with just 3 unplaced runs. Winner of classics galore as both a 2 and 3 year old....proper classics as well as restricted sales "classics"....including The Oaks....and banked over $350k in a brief but stellar career. Bred locally from an unraced imported NZ mare and a sister to a recent winner of 5 city races at GP this season, her record shows up a rare quirk. She won the same 3yo Fillies classic twice, as for some reason, this classic was contested twice in the one season...at different venues but for a substantial purse on each occasion. Hails from a top extended NZ family with winners galore and has produced this quality weanling which I will follow with great interest.

Just another aside, last Wednesday in what was basically blizzard weather....hail, torrential rain and and an icy cold gale force wind, I went out to Middlesex to round up a 2 year old Alta Christiano filly for another friend. She was very content in hock high lush green grass, another version of horse heaven, but was more than happy to be caught and rugged....what a lovely cut of a filly with the sweetest nature and perfect conformation...all she wanted was a pat and a cuddle....if this is typical of Alta Christiano stock, then you could do a lot worse than go to him. She is already broken and gaited and is another I will take good notice of as she progresses. Surprising number of standardbred mares and foals lurking in the back blocks of Manjimup. I even came across a 12 year old standardbred being lovingly cared for and ridden by a 13 year old kid in Pony Club. She told me his name was "Oyster", checked his brand and "Oyster" turns out to be The Oyster Bar, a grand old winner of over $160k that is enjoying retirement in 5 star conditions with a devoted new owner. Warmed my old heart it did....on a thoroughly dirty freezing day.

The result of a super cross....a Most Happy Fella Sire line across an Abercrombie mare line...he had to have a bit of a chance seeing his colonial dam line stems from a close up link to one of the great mares ever to race in Australia (a dual world record holder)....Yet with a win record of greater than 55%.....and a win and place record of 77%.....and group wins from age 2 to 6 and, for his time, buckets of prizemoney north of $300k, he rarely if ever rates a mention in any discussion of top horses. True, his opponents in his juvenile years were not from the top shelf but he could only beat those that turned up which he did regularly in 3 yo classics....Western Gateway, Caduceus Club etc .....continuing on through Country Cups, Christmas features and $50k City Cup races including scalps like Lombo Pocketwatch. Just 43 career starts but he made his mark yet has largely flown under the historical radar.

Just the one place bet tomorrow night - short but sweet - the old number 10 with the soft run trick - race 1, if around $1.50 a place available will lock and load on Suspicous Life to trail through on the back of the odds on favourite and at least hold his ground into the placings.

Talking of $1.50 one of the corporates in race 2 has gone up Bronze Seeker at 1/2 :-O goodness gracious. The out of form nine year old ( 0, 8, 0, 9 ) has the coveted number one draw in a weak field but just a $1.50 :-\" A bolter for long shot punters might be the 50/1 chance #8. Trustytrev.

The roughie of the night in race 3 is awkwardly drawn in barrier 6 and no doubt will get back in a good field, so around 16/1 to 20/1 is about his right price but a win is nigh for Courage Tells.

The observant among us will have noticed that I do not tip
on the forum unlike many that provide their thoughts on a consistent basis.

I obviously have masochistic tendencies and want to put a
target on my back so here goes.

After much negative comment on the early ratings I was
approached in January 2017 to do the Giddyup Ratings for all WA Harness
Meetings.

I have rated 2938 races in that time for the following
winning strike rates:

Top Rated Horse 41.3%

Top Two Rated Horses 60.2%

Top Three Rated Horses 73.6%

Top Four Rated Horses 80.1%

Giddyup Good Things 63.6%

Do I make some glaring errors, of course I do, where you
only have to go back to last Friday at GP to see that I rated horses above
Bettors Fire, Lady De La Renta and Lord Willoughby.

When I am way off the mark I take it personally and pledge
to do better but ratings are far from an exact science and my ratings are done
prior to the release of any betting markets and any other tipping services.

You can now pick they eyes out of my mistakes but when you
do you should also consider the above strike rates.

R1: Fraught with danger not going the leader but I thought No12 Bettor Be Chevron had the class to beat these. She probably isn’t racing as well as she can but I thought an early speed battle from 1-4 would be enough to set it up for her. If they ease off she can move into it, if not sit sprint. Thought No5 My Platinum Belle was the main danger, if she was a little bit quicker out I’d have her on top but just think she will cover a bit too much ground early causing her to feel the pinch late. No10 Glenferrie Arch is definitely a player but does she get caught up behind some of these? My guess is yes.Tip: No12 Bettor Be Chevron. QD: 5,10,12. FF:5,12/1,3,5,10,12/1,3,5,10,11,12/1,3,5,7,10,11,12. 100% for $128 is probably far too big a spend but happy to have a crack at a small percentage.

R2: Bit of a throw at the stumps with No11 Courage Tells. Thought Shes Artful would hold up, Courage Tells would drop 3 back the fence, Wabi Sabi would give Dana Duke the 1,1 and Qtown Riproaring would be on his back. That scenario or something similar Courage Tells 3 back the fence can be very dangerous this grade. Others mentioned are the first four players along with Responder who I like but unfortunately for him he struggles to quicken and Irockmyworld who can follow the pegs. Tip: No11 Courage Tells. QD:2,3,11. FF:2,3,11/1,2,3,11/1,2,3,11/1,2,3,4,10,11,12. 100% for $72.

R3: Probably wrong but I’m genuinely expecting Maczaffair, Vultin Tin and Shandale all to have a red hot crack at keeping out Bettors Fire which should make for a great race. For sake of a tip I will go Shandale to keep on improving with racing, no punt other than going wide in the early quad and cheering for Copagrin! Tip: No4 Shandale. QD:2,3,4,5,6,7.

R4: No3 Eagle Rox my best of the night, think she breezes, controls it and wins. Im Master Charlie likely to cross the stablemate to give them both their best chance of an earn. Art Keeper looked like he was plodding but did break 28 home only sprinting from the turn last week so 3 back getting the gaps he will be dangerous. Trustytrev will be well back on the fence but will be rattling home into the back end of the money. Tip: No3 Eagle Rox. QD:2,3,10. FF:3,10/2,3,10/1,2,3,10,12/1,2,3,10,11,12. 100% costs $36 but could shorten that right up.

R5: In order to get across I thought Lady De La Renta would have to get revved up and it would still take her a while which COULD bring her undone, certainly a risk at the price. Expecting Orphan Reactor to hand up but not immediately and Our Major Mama to breeze, opposite her winning form of late but has to be driven that way here IMO and can win. The one at the price and getting the sleepers run will be Captured Delight. She is more than up to them off this trip, nice and patient, the gaps will come and she can go past the favoured runners.
Tip: No10 Captured Delight, QD:4,6,10.

R6: If Ohoka Darcy had drawn inside Billy Mac I would have been very keen but with the draws I’m expecting Billy Mac to want to keep the breeze and thus be the key to the race. Whenmechief gets his chance to lead and win one here if he’s good enough. Soho Wonder will probably cross Say It Now and sit in a beautiful position but I’m not sure it’s good enough. Risk is the bit of class but I think it might be the one who gets hit hardest by Billy Mac being aggressively driven. I’ll tip Ohoka Darcy but with the draws am relying on the master AC Lewis, not a bad spot to be! Tip: No6 Ohoka Darcy. QD:1,6,9.

R7: Some lovely horses to own in this but I’m of the opinion it might be a bit of a non-event and they show Mister Shark the ultimate respect, unchallenged to the lead and away he goes. Soho Leviathan does have solid gate speed but I don’t think he’s good enough to burn over these and not get run over at the end so I think they will adopt the fight another day strategy. Going to take Mister Versace just in case there is a chink in the armour, Voak kind of hinted in his interview he would drive aggressive but that was Tuesday and I suspect they may have reassessed.
Tip: No3 Mista Shark. QD:1,3.

R8: He’s not foolproof but I do expect Lord Willoughby to lead. Should go close from there. I’m Rockaria’s trial reads great but he hasn’t been one of mine along the journey. They stand out from a quad perspective but my betting interest has waned over the last few races.
Tip: No1 Lord Willoughby. QD:1,5.

R9: Estilo and Kaptain Kenny are both going to want Tisadream’s back so it could see him working a bit early. It should win but that slight chance of early work gives Arthur Lowe a chance, he has his foot on the till with an ounce of luck. Looking to play it anchoring those two with the 1,2 who could get the nice run and the 11,12 who are a bit of class compered to others with the 4,7 in the back end.
Tip: No3 Tisadream. FF:3,10/3,10/1,2,11,12/1,2,4,7,11,12. 100% costs $40.

R10: Brookies Jet and Rich Yankee contest the lead, think Brookie holds up and is competitive. I thought No8 Ardens Concord could work his way up on to the pace and dominate the event. Bravo Tex’s last run needs to be respect, he probably wants to do something similar to Ardens Concord so it could mean tempo on. If Lightning Jolt can settle he is a massive danger, he will be smashing the line and probably the way I will go just looking at some of the early markets. Ideal Flipflop follows it through. One more run for Suspicious Life but just with thought of an up tempo event I’ll slot him in.
Tip: No10 Lightning Jolt. Tri: 8,10,12/2,8,10,12/2,8,9,10,11,12. 100% costs $36.

Going far too wide in most of the novelties bar R4 and tend to miss the wide ones and get the skinny ones so should put all my eggs in one basket. Will however be playing something along the lines of those bets as well as multis with Bettor Be Chevron (W), Courage Tells (EW), Eagle Rox (W), Captured Delight (EW), Ohoka Darcy (EW), Arthur Lowe (plc), Lightning Jolt (EW).

Back from a self imposed 28 day suspension with a memo to myself not make factual statements that may upset some people.

This is a very interesting rule change:

HRA Members Approve Deletion of 'Change of Tactics' Rule

15 May 2018

HRA Members today approved the deletion of Australian Harness Racing Rule (AHRR) 44 relating to Tactics.

Often referred to as the ‘change of tactics’ rule, this Rule will be deleted by State Controlling Bodies (SCB’s) at the earliest opportunity, however, participants are urged to make themselves aware of the specific implementation dates in each jurisdiction as these may vary.

Following approval by the HRA Membership, rule amendments are then formally communicated to SCB’s who adopt the rule and determine the implementation date. This can vary from State to States dependent upon their individual governance structures relating to Rule amendments.

In arriving at this position, regulators were of the view that race tactics still be closely monitored, particularly those of stablemates, and that the AHRR’s provided alternative options with which to take action if necessary.

For more information, please contact Andrew Kelly on 03 9227 3000.

In my opinion this places the onus back on the stewards to control the consistency of driving tactics and that is not necessarily a bad thing.

This is achievable tonight...a couple of interesting stablemates in the first leg. One of those two win and the Quaddie after just one leg is signed, sealed and on a journey to be delivered. If neither win, it's lights out.

Race 5. #1. Riri Rihanna 3. Lady Azalea.
Race 6. #2. Iceenothink 9. Simba Bromac.
Race 7. #1. Ebony Stride 3. McKinley 7. Abetta Tiny Dancer 9. Luminosa.
Race 8. #2. Beware Of Darkness 5. Call Me Ernie 6. Wearing Shades 8. Impressive Signs 10. Moonlight Shadow.

That's 2 x 2 x 4 x 5 = $80 for 100%. Will take for $30 = 37.50%.
