The influx of corporate bookmakers providing fixed odds
service has in my opinion made it much harder to find value in both win and
place and novelty betting.

Prior to the introduction of fixed odds betting the only
punters that had access to an accurate market were those that ventured on
course to observe the bookmakers in operation.

The plethora of fixed odds available has had the following affect
on betting on WA harness racing:

1 Bet365 go up nearly 12 hours before anyone else but it is difficult to have a reasonable bet if you consider a mistake has been
made.

2.
When the other corporates go up the Bet365
market has settled and copy and paste keys get a very solid workout with little
difference in the prices.

3.
Every punter now has access to these relatively
accurate markets to shape their novelty betting and value has dissipated as
result of the reduction in uneducated investments.

4.
The semi pro or astute punter now has a significantly
reduced advantage over the recreational punter with the information now
available.

There are isolated examples of novelties paying well over
the true probability but they are few and far between.

The 20% commission on most novelties also makes it
impossible to beat.

I am certain that the above scenario also applies to the
other two racing codes.

From a purely selfish point of view I yearn for the days
when I had a distinct advantage over the majority of punters.

Harry Ware did one last lap of his beloved Kellerberrin track last Saturday after passing away earlier in the week aged 85. Few on here would remember him but he was cast from the same mold as Jock Coleman, Billy Whitfield, Bryce Stevens and all those other absolute stalwarts of the North Eastern District harness circuit. Harry always had a horse or two going around at Keller, Northam, Merredin, Cunderdin, Trayning or Wylie, along with a couple that ventured to Perth. A life member of the Central Wheatbelt (read Kelleberrin) Harness Racing Club, there were few better blokes and few who did more to keep the club ticking along in those old days. Terrific bloke, always smiling and will be greatly missed by everyone.
Good meeting coming up.

If can get around $2 a place Zach Macguire from barrier one up against the cream of Soho Tribeca ( barrier 2 ) and Chicago Bull ( barrier 3 ) that's ok..got a lot of time for Zach think he's good enough to sit on Soho and run the drum. With the Bull in three and a much improved My Hard Copy from the inside of the back row drawn behind Zach Macguire it will be interesting...there the only four chances!

It's a three pronged Hall attack against Soho but think he will lead and win with Zach holding up on his back to fill a place.

Earlier on Devendra has opened up favourite at $3.50 from barrier five. Been poorly driven last two unplaced runs but with Chris Voak driving this time must be a chance but think $3.50 is way too short. Will wait and see on him.

Yes, its a funny little track, yes the floats have to park in the street and the stabling area is ....well, close quarters....but the joint is packed.....queuing up to have a bet, the bar and tote area packed, the car park on the oval chockers, ....it got a bit cool and the crowd thinned out about 10 o'clock but on course, a fabulous atmosphere. Just a footnote, the car parking fee is donated to charity and free entry for kids....the holiday makers come in their droves. Big mention to the Simmo's Ice Cream van and Matt Young's on course work in "educating" a "non educated crowd" (no disrespect to the crowd) was terrific.

R1: No1 Dior Mia More a rightful short price favourite. Just has to do what she has been doing and she wins. Terraforce the place is the play for me $7.50 massive price early for those who can shop 365. He just sits in the moving line and watches it unfold the runs on into the money late. You can Anchor New Workd Order the novelties as well. He will move into it when the speed allows and keep going but has never really reached the heights he looked capable off. Bet: 2 Terraforce the place. FF:1/2,7/2,7/6,8,10,11 100% costs $8 then rotate the 2,7 through.

R2: Doesn't look a great race to play really as the leader leaders back scenario looks to come into play and the market/divs will reflect that. Thought the 9,10,11,12 were the ones you wanted to play with the 2/1. There is some value amongst that lot so maybe that will get something out of it. Bet: FF: 2/1/9,10,11,12/9,10,11,12. 100% costs $12 then rotate 1 through 3rd.

R3: Thought one of Ohoka Darcy or Johnny Disco could get in behind the leader and winner Three Blind Mice. Interesting to see how they drive El Hombre, might come around I think and I suspect Sokys Big Bullet will be happy to take the trail. Thought that was your race with the 11 and 12 being capable of running into the back end of the money. Bet: FF:1/2,3,8/2,3,8/2,3,6,8,11,12. 100% costs $24.

R4: Not a race i'll be playing at all. Common sense says Bettors Fire leads and wins but that doesn't mean a lot in this kind of race.

R5: Mon Lilies a strong chance to cross. No10 Tajies Girl looks a sensational EW bet to me. Was fantastic Monday. Smoking the pipe the fence in a race where I have no doubt the lead time will be run hard, happy to be on her. Bet: EW No10 Tajies Girl. QD:1,6,9,10

R6: If they make the favourite earn it plenty come in to play, has the potential to be a good race but the likelihood to be a fizzer. Love to see Major Catastrophe driven aggressively if he steps. He is probably the play on an EW basis, I have to go wide as I always err towards competitive racing. QD:3,5,8,9,11.

R7: Surely better ways to invest your money than on Herrick Roosevelt at $1.25. He was beaten on his merits by Wrappers Delight last week. I know its a completely different scenario here but Wrappers Delight sitting close and Walkinshaw getting that pegs run throughout have to be dangers. Rock Diamonds will be put into it at some stage. Driven cold Argyle Red will flash late and my mate The Revolution will be following through hard on the pegs. Bet: FF: 1,2,10/1,2,10/1,2,5,10,11/1,2,4,5,10,11,12. 100% costs $72. QD:1,2,10.

R8: Ayana, Sea Me Smile and Nothingbutadream are going to have a crack at Sheez Edgy at the start of this race, she is way to short IMO. I thought Bettor Bling was a ripper bet here, expected her to be a lot shorter in the markets, She will sit close and just be too quick for them late. QD:3,8,12.

R9: Good luck in the trot.

R10: Ima Rocknroll Legend is a massive risk at the short prices. YES he is better than them but he can only sprint for 200-300m tops, I think Jnr is going to get itchy fingers, Hawkins wont give him the front and they will be susceptible to the finishing bursts of Hawkeye Bromac and Raffaello. A race I will definitely stay up for.

Albany club would have to be rapt with their first meeting. Looks to be some great value in R3 No1 Spoc The Spaceman, R4 No6 Somondu Su, R5 No1 Madam Gazelle taking the novelties with All Jokes Aside and risking the early fav who is yet to show up in WA and closing it out with R7 No2 McKinley.

A heap of winners there, go get em.

R1: The trial form of the 2 only reads fair at a quick glance so it probably lends itself to Cot Beach just running straight to the top. She was gassed early sat and only 6 days between runs i'm happy to bet against her, thought Speed Man could get it done either getting up outside her if it is soft early or zap her late. Bet: Wins Speedman.

R2: I'm not playing this event.

R3: Soho Leviathan looks to be able to cross those under him and then I expect him to hand up to Messi. I'm going to take a chance that they might over cook it a bit early and that Glenferrie Rustler is going to be ready to go first up. He is going to be something like 4 back the fence so he will need a bit of luck but if he gets it i'm confident he will be running on. Bet:No10 Glenferrie Rustler EW. FF:6,10/1,5,6,10/1,5,6,10/1,2,5,6,7,10,9,11.

R4: Oneonthewood to set it early being the only horse off the front with Maximum Demand on his back and Always Arjay with Assassinator both charging early to try take the top away from the 1. Not a race i'm playing heavily but should be a good one. Bet: EW Oneonthewood should give a sight.

R5: Pretty keen on a maddy here. Expect there to be a really good charge early between the 1,2,3,4. Sitting right behind them will be The Revolution. He was hitting the line very well (admittedly in a slow quarter) last week. His best is good enough to win this. Bet: EW No11 The Revolution.

R6:The couple of early markets I have seen have it priced as though Sokys Bigbullet runs to the front and that's all she wrote. Not sure that happens. Liked the flashing last start effort of Walkinshaw, admittedly that was along the pegs and he will be in the moving line here but i'm willing to take that as a sign he is returning to more like what he appears to be capable of. Skippy Rascal will be up in the firing line throught and looks like he will be a backable price as well. Bet: EW No11 Walkinshaw and something small Skippy Rascal.

R7: My thoughts are that Ideal Alice will try to hold the front until Ohoka Punter gets there. I also think that the Voak train will be well aware of this and kick up in between him on Vultin Tin. Then you have to factor in Alice can get keen and might get trucking on Jones. I don't like backing things off the fence and back in the field over the longer trips, they have looked like they have been running in quick sand that final lap regardless of what times they have been getting home. With that in mind if McDonald can get El Hombre to the fence early and stay there until the final 500m or so I genuinely think he can zap them. The fact that Vultin Tin ran as well as he did through the inters, has a switched on driver and is as a tough as they come combined with him looking to be an EW price he is an EW bet to nothing here too. Bet: EW Vultin Tin, El Hombre. Novelties around the 6&9.

R8: Quick glance it looks Rock Diamonds race. Hawkins is an aggressive driver on the 1 but I expect him to restrain. Hard to get a gauge on Lets Chase The Dream but is obviously a massive class drop. Bet: Not one i'll be playing hard but FF:3/1,4/1,4,5,10/1,4,5,10,11,12.

R9: Interesting to see if Maczaffair tries to put it to bed in the first 150m and charges the arm or goes back and just uses her class. I'd probably go tactic B as if she did charge out there are a few that could be tempted to go with her but also if a horse like Dior Mia More got an easy lead she could definitely give some cheek so it is a tough decision. A watch race for me.

R10: I thought Madam Meilland was just put in take out, should lead and should win. Has opened up a generous price with sportsbet. I thought Sheez Edgy would do enough to keep her back throughout and that was about it, don't really see her as the threat the market has found. Simondu Su gets to the fence behind her and kicks in the value for the FF. Bet: FF: 2/1/3/FD.

Good luck all.

I mentioned it a little while ago but nothing has changed......

Tonight on Sky we view the field circling before score up and then the actual score up to the mobile. That sounds good so far but on the left of screen we view a darkened grandstand and the grassed standing area that includes the massive crowd of.... TWO... oh hang on over the two races I viewed (races 4 and 5 from memory) I witnessed a maximum of THREE attendees standing to watch the race. Crikey there were more people standing on the grassy knoll in 1963. God there were more people in my lounge room socialising at race start times.

The vision is an embarrassment to the industry. Stick to the close ups and forget the wide angle home straight view.

Perth Inter's Memories

The first (and pretty vague) memories I have of the Interdominions were of Caduceus winning at Harold Park in 1960....probably because of his connection with Frank Kersley and also because Kiwi Dillon (who ran 6th in the final) was a household name in Perth at the time via his legendary trainer Pop Johnson and his ace driver in son Max.
However, young JayJay's interest began to peak (and has never waned) when the series returned to Gloucester Park in 1962. This series had it all ..champion horses, legendary reinsman, drama and massive crowds. Of course, the future behemoth of Harness Racing, Cardigan Bay, the first ever standardbred to win a million dollars in prizemoney, was the lead story after winning his heats on night 1 and 2, along with Perc Hall's great NSW champion James Scott. The presses at the Daily News were stopped one afternoon prior to the 3rd round of heats to enable famed trotting journalist Arthur Thornton, allegedly on a tip off from Leo Keys, to travel out to Cannington to file copy on a report that Cardigan Bay had been badly inured after escaping from his handlers at the old Cannington track. He (the horse, not Arthur) careered down Station street before falling and badly damaging his hip with concerns being expressed at the time that he may have to be put down. Of course, he was scratched from the remainder of the series leaving James Scott as the red hot favourite, a favouritism totally justified after James Scott won his 3rd and final heat and obliterated the field in the Grand Final rating an almost unheard of 2.4.6 from the stand over 13 furlongs in defeating Lew's Hope by 6 yards, with a further 12 yards back to 3rd placed Super Paddy (Les Marriott). A huge crowd packed the terraces to watch the brilliant James Scott take the win and there are many action shots of this great horse in full flight as he crossed the line. As a forerunner of things to come, 5th placing in the final went to former Tasmanian stallion Collaborate, a horse who would have a significant influence on the WA breeding industry. He was handled by a youthful Phillip Charles Coulson for trainer Fred Kersley Snr just as the former was about to embark on a sustained period of dominance in WA harness racing. The great aftermath story of that years series was Cardigan Bay's remarkable recovery from his career threatening injury via the great skill and patience of local trainer/driver Ted Greig, who nursed Cardigan Bay back to full health, ultimately paving the way for Cardy to claim the following seasons Interdominion in a remarkable performance form 24 yards behind around the saucer like SA Wayville track.
With many high profile WA horses contesting the subsequent series held away in the Eastern States and New Zealand,Bin Oro, Kiwi Dillon, Eaton Hall, Minton Hall to name just a few, interest in the 1967 series at Gloucester Park was at an all time high. Nominees included the champion NZ mare Robin Dundee, the almost reigning champ of Australian Harness Racing, the mighty Tasmanian Halwes, NSW star Tongue Twister, South Australian Bon Adios, Goulbourn View, Southern Song, Waitaki Hanover and a cavalcade of star reinsmen from across the dominion....Doody Townley, Bill Shinn, Robert Cameron, Don Ducat, Kevin Newman...all here in Perth to take on arguably one of the strongest contingent of Western Australian fast class horses and drivers in the nation. Kersley, Lindau, Coulson, Pollock, Poyser, Robinson and their respective charges Blue Pennant, Velocipede, Satanas, Color Glo, Coneeda, Paula Nelson and the young pretender, a lightly raced rising star named Binshaw, a striking bay horse with four white sox, something superstitious old horsemen shied away from. I recall going to the Tuesday night trials to watch the raiders prepare and getting bitten by the rather surly Robin Dundee as I foolishly tried to pat her...a trait she was apparently famous for but was unbeknown to me. I never tried it again. Public interest in the series was never higher.
After defeating the odds on Halwes in his first two qualifying heats, the punters who had taken the initial generous odds on offer for Binshaw winning the Grand Final were on very good terms with themselves. With all the stars qualifying for the Grand Final, it was standing room only, and very little of that on offer, as an estimated 35,000 spectators crammed every vantage point to watch Binshaw, prepared to the second and absolutely glowing in condition, romp away from Coneeda and Goulbourn View to a rapturous reception with Robin Dundee a gallant 4th from a 36 yard handicap. Binshaw gained the perfect run three back on the rail and when produced at the 2 furlong marker, he simply opened up the field to win easily by nearly 4 lengths ....the first WA bred, owned, trained and driven winner of an Interdominion Final. Such was the prestige afforded his win that Phil Coulson was announced the WA Sports Star of the Year for 1967. From that day on, Binshaw was, and still is my most favourite horse ever...not the best but just my favourite. It was a momentous win and one that still makes my very diminished hair stand on end.
(To be continued)

At one stage Friday night looked 99% sure that six horses were fighting for three positions to make up the final field of ten. Shandale, Devendra, Major Crocker, Vulcan Tin, Ya's Ya's Hotspot and Egodan.

There was then a little gap back to Ohaka Punter, and a further space back to Have Faith In Me. Those two needed miracles - one of them got it - the other came very close.

This is how Have Faith In Me - made the Interdominion Final - deservedly too.

1. First of all he had to win or run second in the final heat at 50/1. Doesn't do that and he's out! When considering stablemate Lazrus was $1.04 it didn't leave many spots left. It had to be second or nothing! Ran - second.

Before arriving at that scenario these occurrences in earlier heats and his own heat also needed to happen or - out!

2. Devendra had to run stone last - ran last. He beats just one horse home he's in. Alas not to be.

3. Needed Major Crocker to finish no closer than seventh. If he runs top 6 he's in. Alas again - not to be - ran 7th.

4. Egodan needed to run 5th or better - couldn't get there - ran 7th.

Meanwhile Shandale sat tight and got in and Vulcan Tin ( not your best drive Voaky! ) also made it.

Maybe it wasn't luck, or divine intervention - perhaps if could've spoken before the night began he may have just said 'have faith in me'.
