Had the run of the race, but thought she would still get burnt right off , but held her ground well to the line finishing right on their rump steaks.

Will be difficult from gate 6 but on that effort eachway for me, looks the only danger to Better Boa.
I note that South Australian harness, have received permission to run a night meeting on Friday 27th. October at the old Wayville showgrounds.

It will coincide with the William Reid Stakes meeting at Moonee Valley and they expect a crowd of at least 10,000. Six bookies including Adelaide's biggest Curley Seal will field on the trots and Moonee Valley.

The track has a circumference of 512 metres. That's not a misprint. They actually ran 6 inter dominions there and the last meeting there was in 1973.

I was there with the missus a few weeks ago, coz that's where they hold the Royal Adelaide show. Have to say that they have some very nice facilities which were obviously built after the track closed down. Fully enclosed grand stands etc. but, the track itself was a cow paddock, and they will have to do a bit of work to get it up to scratch.

When you look at the track, and its circumference, you have to wonder how any horse other than the leader won a race. It's an absolute saucer and I reckon 5 across the front would be a tight squeeze. And the straight is barely that.

For those who don't know where it is, you can walk to the track from the city centre of Adelaide. Lots of public transport which stops outside the track, and a huge park where you can park your car.

It's a one off meeting at this point in time, but considering that Globe Derby is a desert wasteland and that's when they actually have a meeting on, they may decide to run a few more special meetings there if this ones a success. I know that I'd go if I was there, but I'll be in Sydney at the time.

I'll say one thing, anyone who can remember how races were run there and if leaders just won or you could come from behind, (calling Jay Jay), will have an edge on those just betting and hoping.

Stewards Report ; At the conclusion of this event all clear was given on the judges numbers of 1,2,3, and 8. Subsequently ( after the all clear ) the judge notified stewards that an error had been made and acting under rule 49(5) the judge corrected the error and amended the placings to 1,2,3 and 7.

In accordance with TAB policies dividends were paid on initial numbers ( 1,2,3,8 - in other words if you had first the four with correct numbers 1,2,3,7 - shafted. )

Official records will reflect the correct finishing order.

On the 29th August a forum member stated about another numbers mistake at Pinjarra - I think it's approaching 15-20 times this has happened in WA harness racing in the past two years.

That figure seems incredibly high even half is too much...but once again, this time at Kalgoorlie another error. What else is on a judges job description apart from getting the numbers correct ? One would think it would be a high priority.

Sometimes, all the planets align in the tricky business of breeding and racing horses. Right place, right time, royally bred etc...everyone is familiar with the cliches. Other times, with impeccable breeding, they can't run out of sight or they have a brother who is a super star and yours can barely pace a mile in 2.20. Sometimes, you jag a ripper only for there to be a down turn and stakes drop dramatically and you earn bugger all. Back in the 90's, Sire Stakes racing was the go with races being run for ridiculous amounts of money all across Australia and on occasions, the fields were pretty poor and if you snagged a decent 2 year old, you could move into Jutland Parade. #10 in this series just about ticks all those boxes, one of the most enigmatic horses I have researched. Did he fly under the radar? Well mostly, a definite Yes....but he dropped some huge bombs when he did. Was he royally bred?.....well on the bloodline side, like few others but on performance, his pedigree line contains an amazingly sparse number of winners, especially considering the performance of his mum, a royally bred and well performed mare who, apart from him and his full brother, threw precious little....as did her ancestors....rich, rich blood, very few winners going back 4 to 5 generations.
Firstly his breeding. His sire was a Most Happy Fella superstar, both on the track and in the breeding barn, producing 613 Australian winners of over 19 million in stakes...astonishing numbers for the late 80's, early 90's when he was standing. His dam was a classic and group winning mare in WA, a winner of Triple Crown mares races, placed in all the major mares classics and a group 2 Cup winner. And boy, was she royally bred.....Lordship (and thus Johnny Globe), Fallacy (and thus Light Brigade), U Scott, Flying Song, even going back to Rey De Oro, this was a serious bloodline .....but apart from his dam, there is a hardly a decent horse amongst them from an awful lot of attempts. The NZ breeders were, thank goodness, sticklers for staying the breeding course, impatient they were not, and eventually, success came.
I started racing as a 2 year old on the provincial circuit, a first up 5th was okay but then, a picket fence came up quick smart with 5 successive wins including a 100k Sires Stakes race in which I knocked off a future Pacing Cup winner and a Graham Tindale trained 3rd place getter who would later qualify for an Interdominion Final over east. Deposit paid in Jutland Parade if the owner was so inclined (which I hasten to add, he wasn't....a more down to earth bloke you would never meet).
But the fairy tale was just beginning.....taken over East for the aforementioned ridiculous Sires Stakes racing purses on offer, Gold arrived in spades when a small fortune in prize money (over a quarter of a million) was won for knocking over some reasonably decent competition but with respect, very few horses that anyone could readily recall today. Bugger the deposit in Dalkeith, just buy outright!!!
Returning home, I had a modest 3 year old career, beating the future Pacing Cup winner in a Triple Crown race and winning another 3 year old metro race, which threw up the very infrequent occurrence of Phil Coulson driving an FRK trained horse, one of only 2 occasions that I have ever come across.
With injury concerns ever present, I won 3 metro races as 4 year old off a fairly limited campaign, had 12 months off returning as a 5 year old for 1 metro and two minor provincial wins. As a 6 year old, my final campaign of racing, I sparked into life winning 3 fast class metro races, beating a Golden Nugget winner in one, and a Pacing Cup runner up in another, until my career finally petered out and off to stud I went where I experienced only minor success.
22 wins and 15 places from about 70 starts, no ridiculous life time mile rate record.....but ....with well over $400k on the payroll, I was definitely right time, right place....and an absolute joy for my owner....and a very good looker to boot. My full brother was about the only other really decent horse in the family pedigree, so either someone really knew what they were doing or we were both just lucky dips.

Ok, ok, ....dirty night, wind howling, buckets of rain...spring in Manji, sheesh!!! And smiling after reading Ken Casselas's form comment on Neighlor for next Tuesday at GP...."had supporters lining up early outside the local bakery after winning by 9.7m" etc....seems the great man reads PTT....hope he hasn't put the mozz on us lol.

Not many Queensland bred horses make the headlines in WA but this little bloke with 22 wins in the 1990's and numerous big time placings gets him a guernsey. Even more-so when you battle to find anything to get excited about in his pedigree...and I get easily excited about almost any sign of success in a pedigree. Although his sire was a son of Albatross, he was hardly a household name and the dam side is very light on for winners, even minor winners. And if qualifying for the Flying Under The Radar means getting beaten up by really top horses, then this little horse qualifies. I actually came across him during his educational days and never thought he would be mixing it in top company but good manners and quality handling from one of the most astute judges and educators I ever came across count for an awful lot.
Stepping out as a 2 year old, he chased home one of the really dominant Whitby horses at Northam before winning at his 2nd start at GP. At his 3rd and final 2 year old start in the $100k Sires race, he met severe interference and again fell victim to the Whitby success train. Put away to grow, which he didn't, he returned as a 3 year old and put together a run of 5 wins from 6 starts including 2 city races at GP. Heading towards the WA Derby through the preludes, he was 3rd in the Derby Final to another of the Whitby brigade. Racing on to the end of his 3 year old season, he raced another 12 times for 5 wins and 3 seconds before heading off for a spell. Regarded as one of the better 3 year olds of his class.
Returning as a 4 year old the next March, his next 9 starts produced 5 wins, 4 in the city along with a win in a strong Wagin Cup, and 3 seconds with just 1 unplaced run, before being put away for the Summer Carnival. He was becoming a very serious little race horse.
A first up 3rd in the 4 and 5 Year Old Championship and a 2nd at headquarters, both behind quality horses, were followed by a 4th in a WA Cup prelude and a 3rd in the Cup consolation after copping severe interference, all adding to the mysterious decision to leave him out of the Cup final field.
After running a game 2nd in 1.56.3 in the Mount Eden Sprint, he kept racing in fast class ranks, collecting 2 more city wins and numerous placings behind quality horses like Zakara and the Whitby cavalcade.
Returning for the next summer carnival, he again missed out on the Cup Final but ran 3rd once again in the Cup Consolation and continued to place racing towards Winter but he was finding it pretty tough going. However, mid July, he bounced back with a great open class win over his new nemesis Zakara and a game 2nd to one of Ray Duffy's quality FFA horses.
He then lost form and was spelled and when he returned, he was now an 8 year old and spite of running numerous 4th's in races like the August Cup, his time in WA was up and he headed off to South Australia. He won a major FFA at Globe Derby Park worth over $5,000, which was a veritable fortune in SA Harness Racing at the time and raced in the SA Cup worth $100,000 but the winner was a serious champion and as a rising 9 year old, the game was nearly up. Another minor Globe Derby win and numerous 2nd placings followed but as a 10 year old, he was retired after a job very well done. He was the second most successful of his sires meagre tally of 129 winners and was a little gentleman throughout his career.

Lost the argument over the remote...there are only so many times you can watch George Michael in concert....so, lets go with another ripper old horse that flew under the radar.
Exported to Australia as a 3 year old, after a couple of modest wins in NZ for just $5k in stakes, I was as tough as teak....literally...it took me a couple of laps to get warmed up, an out and out stayer. Breeding wise, from old NZ blood with an uncomfortably close infusion of thoroughbred, the imported USA stallion of the day perked up my pedigree and I had some reasonably performed siblings but no real champs.
After lobbing in WA, I would go on to achieve an incredible 70% win place record with the emphasis being on placings. I was piloted by 10 different reinsmen, most of them Hall of Famers and none of them mugs, but I was almost the perennial bridesmaid and my earnings of $240k would, with a touch of luck, have been much greater. I also suffered from the emphasis of the day of sprint racing, the further they went, the better I got.
I was unplaced in most major 3 and 4 year old classics like the Derby, the Australian Derby and the Golden Nugget but I did nab a major 4year old win at GP and worked my way through the classes with frequent wins. But its my placings in major races that kept the till ringing over.
2nd's in the August Cup, the Stratton Cup (twice), the Media Guild Cup,the Winter Cup and the Members Sprint, 3rd's in the Fremantle Cup, the August Cup, 4th's in the Mt Eden Sprint, the Brennan Cup, the Navy Cup and a 5th in the Pacing Cup are bookended by the occasional fast class success with wins in the Botra Cup, Lord Mayors Cup and the Christmas Handicap. I excelled in the Marathon Stakes with 3 attempts producing a win and 2 seconds. All up, 22 wins and 48 placings will make this an easy get for a tough old bastard that exemplifies all the qualities of the Standardbred breed. Probably not a great betting proposition but he put food on the table for years and years.
