Back to have another go tonight.
R4: No10 Four Needed. This horse has been flying his last few, he was scratched from a race a week or two ago but if he has held form the should run well. Be good to see him stay in front of Jason Rulz throughout the run.

R5: No9 Lot twentyone. Thought h was fantastic his last run. This is up in grade but the way it should pan out I think there will be early speed with Affluent Belle looking to come across then Hayter should be able to track Casey John into it.

R6: No9 Suzies Desire. Obviously Rockin The Boys has put a few together now but it has been against nothing where as Suzie has been racing the better grade of fillies and you are getting a great price that she will benefit from this step back in grade.

Depending on how I've gone there a maddy in the 8tht that I think has a hope is Masked Diablo. He was alright 1st up from a long spell without being asked to do anything, if he can be a bit more tractable he can motor past these late.

Quad:1,3,5,6,9,10/5,9,10/7,9,10/3,5,10/

There are better beginers than him off the front but as long as steps ok he will race well on the pace and can win it if making it into a staying event.
R9 No8 Dwayne. He's 40/1, really think with a sleeper run leaders back or 3 back he can flash straight past them in the straight.

Some interest in the 2yr olds. Think Miss Sangrial CAN beat the fav though I wont be backing it. In the other one the newcommer Jack Mac may be a class above but I cant believe the price of Antero @33/1, bound to be running on late.

Looks a tough night on the punt to me but I'll be having at least a very small play in most races.

The Oaks: I was happy to be on I'm Stylish on a 1/5 basis at the mid 20s and 4 ish a place she opened up. I felt live she was running on far better than the replays show it after a very cold drive last start. I feel driven similarly to how she was in the race prior she can be a real competitor in the race. Obviously the fav super hard to run past but no value, get I'm Stylish up outside her and I just don't feel the gap in the market matches the gap in ability.

R1: Wimbilari way to tight in the market for me. I'll have something EW Three Kings and Skippy Rascal but I think every runner has a chance in it.

R2: Military Master was dominant on the weekend, should be the same again here. 10 the only other runner I'll have in the early quad.

R3: Shandale is obviously a super talent but another race where it is so well found in the market you have to bet around it. For me Lord Lombo is racing very well the last month, @50/1 sitting nice and close to them I'll have 5ew. Braeview Bomber looks the leader and can definitely win but looks to be the 1 horse so half the odds it should be scenario here. Mon Lillies has lost a yard at the start it seems but if she crossed would be a massive sight again at cricket score odds. Loved how Naughty Maravua looked last Friday and he ran ok, speed should be on but 9 from the 1700 is nearly impossible and there are obviously others with chances.

R4: The Burch runners are flying at the moment and See Me Victorious is arguably the best of them. Not exactly sure what happens in the run here but SS can take care of it, best of the night.

R5: Pretty keen Bronze Seeker on an EW basis. Has had no luck lately, think Lewis can fire it out to the top, theory is its a better horse than Erskine Range and has Lewis on so expect it to go 1 better than Erskine a couple of weeks a go. Big concern is the trainer driver combo on Crusader Banner, likes to go forward and obviously with a couple of other stable runners who will benefit from an up tempo race.... In that scenario hopefully Heez ON Fire can make it two in a row for everyone's favourite butcher.

R6: Not a lot of standing start form amongst the mares. Foxy Dame is so deserving of a feature race win I have to be on her again. She was massive last week, I think that showed she is now going well enough that if she steps in front of her fellow back markers she can go before them and make her own luck.

R8: I hate barrier 3, it can be such a trap but Artistic Lilly has been running on too well of late for me not to back her in this, Callan can work it out.

R9: Watch the trotters.

R10: Will be up for the last as I'm pretty keen to back both Soho Wallstreet and Northern Emperor. Think Muscle Talk was flattered by how the race was run on the weekend. Thereugo does fly the start, interesting what they do early first up. I just see the front runners not being strong late and my two swooping, happy to back them and play novelties.

Interestingly 365, Sportsbet, ladbrokes and Crown all have markets up come dinner time on a Thursday now. Obviously not sure how anyone showing any knowledge would go getting on regularly but it would be good if WATAB could follow suit or at least get them up by 8ish on a Friday morning.

Been researching the 1950/51 summer carnival and uncovered some remarkable facts and figures.

The Golden Jubilee WA Trotting Cup run on January 1 was worth 5,000 pounds and was for horses handicapped 2.11 or better (M11+). (The Perth Cup at Ascot that same day was worth 3,000 pounds).

The WATA bought over 2 of the very best horses in the Dominion. The 1949 Inter Dominion Champ, the incomparable Single Direct (who won from 36 yrds at Wayville for Edgar Kennerley) and who was handicapped off 36 yards for the Cup, and the reigning Hunter Cup champ Amorous (Albert Gath) Single Direct came by sea to Sydney, air to Adelaide and sea to Fremantle (accompanied by Amorous and 4 others).

The WATA ran a 12 heat Federation Handicap, winners only progressing to the 2,250 pound final.

Using the average weekly earnings index, the 5000 pound Cup stake equates to over $460,000, the 2,250 pound Federation Handicap equating to over $200,000 and the 750 pound lead up FFA's around $40,000.(approx figures).

The Heat Winners and drivers of the 12 heats (with horses handicapped from scratch to 72 yards for the 2.17 and better handicap) were: Beaudale (Ron Porter),Earl's Lady (Harry Wegner), the photo of which hangs on the wall at the Waroona Pub, Chico from 60 yards (Wally Newland), Double Note (Arthur Hough), Super Junior (Laurie Robinson), Petite Direct (Single Direc'ts half sister who traveled from NZ with Single Direct) Edgar Kennerley, Black Lee (Jack Jones), Willack (Dinny Nolan), Miss Eugowra (Frank Kersley), Avon King (Frank Kersley), Dillondale (Frank Kersley) and Red Sol from 72 yards (Max Johnson). The final was won by Beaudale from Super Junior and Willack.

Single Direct defeated local champ Royal Shadow and Catalpa in the Cup, perennial favourite Dark David finished 4th. Single then won another FFA and time trialed in 2.01.2 before heading home. Amorous also won a FFA in the lead up.

The on course Tote turnover on Boxing Night was 36,365 pounds and on Cup night, 50,604 pounds in front of a crowd estimated at 40,000.

Single Direct is a forgotten champ, an unbelievable horse who won Auckland Cups, the NZ FFA in successive years and was still winning FFA's in 1955. Lazarus will lead , Waikiki Beach dropping in for the trail and the very smart Golden Goddess still good enough to come from barrier 6 and run third. Think Golden Goddess is just as good as Waikiki Beach but the draw will make it tough to run second. 1,2,6 - fifty times. 1,6,2 - 20 times. Hopefully a small profit.
Continued the country odyssey last Friday Night at Wagin. First thing to note was the crowd...the dining hall, bar area, tote section was jam packed with patrons, again one of these multi Sports Club set ups with great facilities ...and good tucker. Admittedly, it was a balmy night, not one of your typical freeze your nuts off Wagin specials and there was a very healthy attendance.
Racing was very competitive....can't say that I was on Garry Johnson's $63.40 winner Spoilt Dilinger...few where haha...but Full Package deserves a mention...rivaling Shardon's for longevity but just 260 starts and about $160k in stakes and here he is running around in a R0 and better off just 30m ....was the handicappers and JJ's special for the night.....and clearly the apple of Mr and Mrs Norman's eye. Powerful finisher.

Another chapter to the "never throw away an incorrectly filled out ticket" file....got mixed up with the numbers (no glasses...to lazy to get them from the car) and had my 10 each way on what I thought was My Names Bob...it runs 4th, so no collect. Checked the wallet on Saturday Morning and there is a ticket saying 10e/w Hideout. I thought, that ran 3rd......and it did ...and it paid $9.30 the place. So, an extra couple of sticky buns from the bakehouse. As the weather cools off, probably a few less provincial pilgrimages but if you have time on your hands, there are worse ways to spend a few hours than going to the "Country Trots".

Jay Jay's country odyssey continues...made the trek to Kellerberrin on Sunday for the Cunderdin Cup and Dainty's Daughter Classic, first time I've been there for exactly 40 years. What an excellent set up they now have...last time I was there, it was a night meeting with very dim track lighting and freezing cold around a tiny little saucer of a track. Carted Gleaming, and a reluctant Ken Tyler Jnr up there for her first 3 year old start, in a single horse float behind my trusty Holden Kingswood 253 wagon... which she won and the winning stake was $450. For anyone who hasn't been, the place now has the lot...spacious 800m track which races pretty quickly considering the class of horse, fantastic club house, dining room (and, from watching Donald Harper and Corey Peterson absolutely devour their lunch time LaSagna and chips, a damn fine offering of tucker for next to nothing), bar, tote facilities, big screens... just terrific. It is one of those Royalty For Regions deal (Nats leader Mia Davies is the local member!!!!!) and part of a Greater Sportsground Complex that caters for all sports. And as much as I hanker for the nostalgia of the past and the little off beat clubs, this is a good outcome and I will go back again even though its a long long way from Manjimup.
If you ever go up, drop into the Cunderdin Museum (allow about 40 minutes for $5 entry) and check out the Dainty's Daughter display....fantastic...the WA Pacing Cup world record winning cart, all her Cups, trophies, rugs etc, an extensive run down on her career including major Race Winning Photos (the originals), various video presentations...even has two sets of hand sown original colours that Bernie Cushing wore in the Pacing Cup and Fremantle Cup wins, an outstanding set up....and plenty of other stuff to see in a rally extensive Museum...allow another 2 hours .... Highly recommend.

Racing was good, excellent work from Shannon Suvaljko and Chris Voak on winning the two feature races, great drives both and the SJS drive in the last to get home what is basically a non winning horse was perfect. Some of the support races were ....well....let's just say the form was well hidden.....a lot of battling types (horses and trainers) getting a small piece of the pie....which in my mind is what the old "non TABS" was all about.

Could hardly find a winner (like not one haha) but that didn't matter.....I don't live in Syria or North Korea, there is always food on the table and diesel in the tank....great day out.....beat the hell out of going elbow to elbow with all marron poachers that invade Manjimup every Easter and park their bloody trailers and camper vans with maximum possible random disorganisation and ignorance of any of normal parking conventions and leave a trail of rubbish and broken stubbies to mark their presence..

But @$1.10 you would want him to.
Very keen race 5 on the trifecta straight down the line...1. Soho Angel to lead all the way. 8. Doc Ryan to slipstream and run second. 9. Real Zeal to go three back the pegs and run third. 99% sure should be 1,8,9 but will do some savers on 8,1,9 and 1,9,8. But beware 1,8,9 will only pay about $5 max!
Race 6. Deadset match race Alkiras Desire and Just Bet On Black. Think Blacky can got close to causing a minor upset , but if Alkira leads easily will take some stacking.
Race 7 is interesting only 4 winning chances 1,4,6,8....Walkabout Creek only horse off the back row can do things a bit wrong but could be the value with Shannon Suvaljko in the sulky.
Good luck anybody having a punt!

Whether it be a major meeting at headquarters or just the run of the mill Tuesday night affair it doesn't make any difference to these blokes...a treble to Lewis...double to Gary Hall and a $11 winner for Suvaljko....in fact the three longest priced winners of the night all at around double figures were driven by...Hall , Lewis and S. Suvaljko. Think most of us would have these three drivers in our top five...perhaps top three. Tonight they showed just why.

She's the mobile barrier equilavent of standing start specialist mare Bonsu. By the great Kiwi champ Elsu. Auctioneers Elsu trained by Sarah Suvaljko has had 145 starts for 13 wins and 33 placings. Tonight barrier 12 but if the speed is hot up front and she gets a nice cart up can go close to winning. Whereas Bonsu is very one paced the Auctioneer can unwind with a good burst. Both however are the perfect bread and butter horses.

Just spotting up the Easter Cup Field.....an interesting race because Ohoka Punter will be giving them 50m second up but with all due respect, it falls away after that. Used to be an absolute highlight of the racing calendar ...and Lovers Delight in 2015 was a class act, then you have to go back to 2003 and The Falcon Strike, Allwoods Chief off 30 m in 1998 but the "glory days" were pre 1990. Mystery Cargo in 1988 for the Becketts was preceded by Village Kid, Abenteuer and My Dianthus, and then class acts just about every year.....Indian Chant, Little William, High Moore, Pallaton, Young Robbie. Then after that, the winners list gets really serious...from 1974 back were the true glory days..... Wee Cent, Tanaka, Red Vicar, Miss Dundee, Binshaw, Blue Pennant, Color Glo, Kolworth, Satanas, Mercedes, Super Paddy and Kiwi Dillon gets us back to 1962. Then the Magic Flute double and the demonstration of all demonstrations, Beau Don and Scotts Way, sire of the incomparable Dainty's Daughter.
Linked up with the Easter Handicap heats and a final for 2.19 and better (M2 plus in today's lingo), it was a real Easter Carnival with Cup being for 2.13 or better (M8+).
Without wishing to offend, Thursday night will be a competitive race probably in front of a small crowd and I don't think we will be talking about the combatants in 40 years time as household names...at least I won't be. For the record when Magic Flute won in 1957, it was worth a very considerable $7,000 dollars or 3,500 pounds.
And again, for the record, there are 23 M2 or better horses racing on Thursday Night that are NOT in the cup field.....would make for 2 really good heats of an Easter Handicap and say a $30k final...or if you include the M1 horses, 3 heats, first 4 to the final.
The Cup might come down to Assassinator giving Ohoka something to chase but he is a class horse Ohoka, in spite of his very unlucky 3rd at Melton prior to heading west.

A fellow asked me yesterday would RunRunJimmyDunn get a run in the Derby, as he did not compete in the preludes? Selection of field (listed as 3C0 or better) states preference for horses assessed 3C1+ RBD. From reading the programme in Racing Ahead, it would seem that winners of the preludes are NOT given an exemption from the ballot, nor the winner of the Western Gateway Pace, so on the surface, why call them preludes? This is different from the WA Oaks Prelude to be run on Friday Night where it states the winner this race will be exempt from the ballot for the Oaks on May 5. So, he gets a run as prior to Friday night, he was a 3C3 and on his form on Friday night, he is a contender ...and what will the Macczaffair run in ....the Derby or the Oaks Prelude?

Nice win by Kaydee Stratton on the back of a great drive but had to giggle at Ritchie throwing out Turquia as a horse that had run lots of places but would be a horse that will improve next season. Facts are Turquia had run 1 place in its life, tonight being its second minor placing along with it's sole win from 23 starts but he is a rising 10 year old for goodness sake.. He may well be right, it may well improve but do your homework before stating things that are clearly incorrect. It can run a bit and I hope it does keep improving but I hope to run in the London Marathon next season.
