Some highlights today.
* Treble to outstanding driver Morgan Woodley.
* Drive of the day .. Shannon Suvaljko second on the Mike Reed trained Foxy Dane $4 a drum went three back pegs from back line saved every inch of ground and got reasonably close to Major Reality on the line. Class trainer and a class drive. They are proving a deadly combination and not just with favourites.
* Little mare Bonsu keeps on keeping on and into the placings again.
* Over 3k first four dividend on Leftrightgoodnight gate one and the two favourites in two and three plus the inside of the backline horse. Looked a race where the 2 would lead 3 on the outside 1 behind the leader and 8 three back...finished 1, 2, 3, 8 and a massive first four dividend came to fruition.

Sadly, the Collie Cup meet rounded out the season for Collie/Bridgetown/Williams. Usual large crowd, competitive racing and given the vagaries of small pools, some remarkable divvies based on exposed form. Seems ironic it is winding up because given the sunny day, nice conditions (against what I thought when I left home but Manjimup is meteorological purgatory at the best of times), Sunday arvo racing for the next month or so, culminating in some Easter fixtures would seem the logical way to go if, and it is a big if, they were given some more dates. Certainly, the locals were out in force including Jum's earlier mention of the cricket boys, resplendent in a variety of outfits all with their winning medals around their necks. I tried striking up a conversation with a very polite "Power Ranger" lad but it was late in the day....and a pretty big day from what I could gather. All good fun.

The 2YO race was a bit of an educational trial with a bit of cash on they end of it...as it should be...they only rated 2.8 and a bit but were pretty well behaved. Matt Scott landed a training treble to win trainer of the season (an $800 load of oats), Junior Driver Mark Grantham ($500), Mare Filly American Glamour ($500), Horse of the Year ($500....to be confirmed...about a 4 way tie I think), Leading Driver Chris Voak ($1000) plus trophies on all races. Terrific support from the local community. Also, Trevor Warwick cruising the stalls offering advice to the young drivers.

Some of the divvies were remarkable....Kaydee Stratton $7.70 with a last start 2nd and the first time it has been drawn anywhere in sight of the rails, Normally which absolutely bolted in at Bridgetown in its heat, draws one and bolts in again paying 2.90 and 1.80 ....it should have been about 1.50 and 1.04.....this horse can run a bit. Teal, off a last start 4th and from barrier 2 pays 11.40 and 3.60....not saying I am Sam Smarty Pants and was on all of them, I wasn't (sadly) but the value at these meetings is superior to city meets or the major provincial tracks and it beats the hell out of 6 x $1.10 favourites winning on a Monday night at GP.

Jay Jay's Catering Award ....well a close run thing with meritorious efforts from every canteen but the Sponge Cake at Bridgetown gets the Golden Serving Tongs...always served with a smile and friendly greeting. Can't beat it. Now, time to start searching for an equine wonder to run around at next years "round"...has to be a good beginner.......and cheap haha!

Someone better promote the Country Cups in lieu of a deafening silence from those that should.
Saturday Night, the $30k Harvey Cup at Bunbury will see Our Jimmy Johnson and Full of Excuses resume battle.....along wit Ideal Tyson, Vultan Tin, Courage Tells and Driven...sadly, just a 6 horse field and OJJ a handicapping certainty..an M11 versus Ideal Tyson as a "fake" MO in spite of 16 wins and $143k in the bank given the profoundly ludicrous "handicapping system".
Some past winners of the Harvey Cup include:
Cranwell Jack (Les Marriott) 1963, Captain Forlese (Alex Treasure)1968 , Marip[osa (Rod Starkie)1969,
Dalecliffe (Ray Sweetman) 1971, Garrison
Report (Lyle Lindau) 1972, Hal Tempa (Val Pereira) 1978, Indian Chant FRK 1980, Captain Elect Alex Treasure 1981,Extra Sly P. Not sure he can win it but they should erect a statue of Telham Lane at the entrance to Collie....it wouldn't take up much room as he is only a little pony....but he knows his way around Collie and will be going for his 8th career win at the track, boasting a win and a 2nd (last year to Rodeo Man) in the Collie Cup and 2 wins in the King Coal Cup (2016 and 2017) and will try his little heart out on Sunday, might find it a bit tough off 10 metres against the Brennan horses who will be down in class.
Some past winners include:
1991 Super Red J.Graham, 1992 It's Simply Smart C. Suvaljko, 1993 Walk
About Matt J.Keys, 1994 Nuncio
D.Hallows, 1995 Mint Street C.J.Marsden, 1996 Kings Trick P. King, 1997 Dallas Dundee J. Enright, 1998 Brother Skye A.
Got a function to attend tonight in a "service free" zone ...plenty of them in the South West ...but there are one or two that I like.

Race 3 #11 Livura. Fixed at $4.20 is a bit short first up but the draw is okay and has ability...would want better value before having a dip but quite like the horse.

Race 4 #5 I'm Master Charlie...very short at $2.20 and a question mark from the stand but was enormous in the Bridgetown Cup last Sunday. Got skittled by a galloper out of the mobile, settled at the rear, stayed there whilst the pa was on up front, 3 wide from the 1000m and pulled away in the straight in very good time.I know it was only Bridgetown but was some run.

Race 5 #1 American Bootscooter.....drawn 1, with the Lewis's now, will win but odds on look on.

Race 6 ...Bettors Fire first up has a great record. Much better than these. There is talk about Tuxedo Tour now with Olivieri...been burnt too often to listen but will watch how he goes with interest to see if he can find very lost form.

Race 7 Very good field with Mitch drawing 1 taking some interest away but #10 Tisadreamn drawn behind him at $26 and $2.90...a good 30%/70% EW bet. Has ability.

Race 8 Interesting ex NSW horse with the worst name I've ever seen and on principle, I can't back a horse called Littlebitchicknfried and would want chips and gravy thrown in at $4.20 but dfid win at penrith 2 starts back and hasn't come West for a holiday.

Lovely day at Bridgetown for their Cup...Sunny, but not hot, estimate 500-700 patrons (about 493 more than at some of those Monday $1.10 favorite meetings at GP) and very, very competitive racing ....and personally, great value with a $6, a $4 and to top it off, a $9 winner to make it a profitable day out.
Normally was huge in race 2 for KJH and the Ashcrofts, James Coburn finally got the win he has deserved in the Jones final, Donovan Bromac who looked a treat and got a much better transit without being attacked like his last start at GP was terrific but race of the day was the Cup. It was only worth $10k but they raced like it was worth $100k, the most competitive race I have seen for ages. It was game on from start to finish, why Machilranish came out of his good position I'll never know, Master Jaxon ran up to his form plus some but I'm Master Charlie was terrific, checked badly by a galloper at the start, but Grantham drove a superb race after that (Warning...speaking through pocket!!), putting him into the race at the right time and $9 and $2.40 was unreal value considering his win at Northam. He stuck on all the way up the straight, very good effort. In general, there was far better value all day, very good racing.
Nice to have a day wandering around chatting about the industry and so on....the revamping of the handicap system was a hot topic.....some concerns about adopting the "stakes won" American model being thrown about, different ideas, different views....people at the grass roots level have ideas and thoughts, hope they get listened to in the review. One unanimous point emerges....the star 3 year olds with 100's of thousands of dollars in stakes resuming as 4 year olds in a CO somewhere is universally disliked.
Anyway, its been hard work being a follower this week....GP Monday and Tuesday, Narrogin Thursday, GP Friday, Albany and Bunbury Saturday, Bridgetown Sunday.....badly in need of the spelling paddock...but not yet, Collie Cup meeting next weekend, a must before the grassroots season winds up.

We have all heard of the occasional driver mistaking the laps of a race , sometimes a jockey has done the same. However this one in outer country NSW at Broken Hill takes the cake when the whole field mistook the laps!
Was meant to be just over three and a half laps of the 602 metre circuit but things went awry when the leader shot for home with a still a lap to go! That triggered a panic with all the other drivers despite being another round to go. Then total confusion with the leader easing down and then took off again whilst the rest were pulling up to a halt , they then got going too! They were still coming in when the cows came home. For some inexplicable reason there was no sounding of the bell ( pretty simple to have a working bell in a multi million dollar industry one would have thought ) but even so how hard is it to count to three ? Eventually a no race was declared.

Gee, it's a good day out at this little saucer of a track. Always a good crowd and interesting racing. Important things first......the Hot Beef and Gravy rolls?...to die for.....and the Scones jam and cream, also top shelf.
Bouchee, a horse I had not really heard of in race 1, was a big on course tip, so if you cant beat them, follow Trent Wheeler at the moment.....$5.20 and $2.10, thanks very much, the day out is paid for.Went alright to for a 3yo filly.
Race of the day was a driving finish between American Glamour and James Coburn....they were at each others throat a long way from home, a slug fest...with C. Voak just edging out Egerton Green on James....I wasn't on either, stuck with my old mate Compact Rocket at 2.70 the place was unreal value knowing he would step and Grantham positioned him behind the leader after coming from outside the 10 m strand, great driving, no shortage of talent in the first 3 pilots.Remember, we are at Collie!!!

As some might know, Darryl Miller had a big smash at Wagin a short while back...a big smash...and there he was on course, crutches, more bandages than an Egyptian mummie and the Miller show began....Cyclone North wins easily for Dean and Darryl hobbles out get his trophy...good stuff. Dean then doubles up for the day with One For Sassy (3 wins in a row) for Andrew DeCampo and then Mitchell Miller gets the cranky Brookies Jet away from 1, after it caused a false start, and then steers it to a big win...and it traveled....2.00.6 is motoring around Collie and it bolted in for Matt Scott. Chris Beckett quinelled the Joe Suvaljko Memorial with Major Spoilt and Bledisloe, just a head in it in a scrappy race, rain was starting to fall and pulled up digs before the last.
Collie Cup in two weeks, recommend you get there if you can...not fancy, no frills but like taking a (good) step back in time.

Talk to several punters at the Tab who all say the say the same thing : we like to bet our $20 to $50 a race but all we see are $1.10 and $1.20 favourites...and what they say is true...we don't want to back them and win bugger all , however we can't take them on either because more than likely they will win. Total amount bet by those punters on pacing today $0.0. Nobody loves the game more than me but the proliferation of odds on favourites has reached its highest point and when you witness punters being turned off by it you know it's reached alarming proportions.

Seeking a bit of information here.....about the famous "whistle blowing" plunge at Gloucester Park. Does anyone recall it from many years ago? There was a big plunge on a horse and after the commission had been placed, a fellow in the betting ring started blowing a whistle...a football umpires whistle. The horses were milling behind the barrier in the back straight when the sustained whistle blowing occurred. The "whistle blower" appeared to be somewhat the worse for wear after apparent extensive post Anzac Day imbibement and was removed from the betting ring by the course detective or betting supervisor under the pretext that he was an ex digger who was a bit over the top. It turned out that this premise may have been incorrect as the said whistle blower was a teetotaler. The race was won and the "plunge" horse duly saluted for a prominent Herdsman Parade reinsman. It now seems that the actual whistle used has re-emerged and will be donated to the future Gloucester Park Museum that Alan Parker is putting a lot of effort into. Trouble is, no one can remember the name of the horse or the date, other than it was on or close to Anzac Day, and searching through the records is proving cumbersome. The whistle blower is still alive and well known to me but sadly, dementia has caught up with him and we are all a bit in the dark. Anyone who can help out....you would have to be a "senior citizen" of trotting....would be greatly appreciated. In the dark distant recesses of my mind, the name "Lesleys Elect" keeps coming up but I am sure this is incorrect. The whole story was relayed to me many years ago by the whistle blower but alas, I have also forgotten specific detail. About 10 years ago, when the whistle blower had his 80th birthday celebration, proceedings were started by the special guest speaker, the prominent Herdsman Parade trainer, walking through the crowd loudly blowing a football umpires whistle. Those who knew were rolling on the ground in laughter, others who didn't looked on in total bewilderment.

The Power Point presentation link from the Industry Information Review sessions (thanks to Matilda Bay) is worth a read:

http://www.rwwa.com.au/home/media-centre/racing-strategic-plans-submissions-requested-5351.html

Lots of "talk" about coming up with a new business plan to arrest the decline in just about every key indicator....turnover, participation, number of foals, on course attendance etc...you name it, it is in decline...and the ridiculous handicapping system which is responsible for the only indicator on the increase, the number of odds on favourites Seems to be an acknowledgement that the "Metrocentric" model currently in use has been a failure and that a new broom is needed. But has the bird flown?

The "talk" and tenor of the new business plan would seem to reflect a lot of things that the regular harness followers on this forum keep on harping about and a return to more grassroots type thinking, encouraging the "hobby' based nature of many harness participants (sadly many of whom have already bailed out), a review of programming (Tuesday night GP meetings in front of just the participants and a few seagulls) whilst the few remaining outer clubs like Collie and Bridgetown with 4 and 2 meetings respectively suffer the death of a thousand cuts, the nonsense of a handicapping system that allows resuming 4yo stars with multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars in stakes to start in a "maiden", the setting up of "provincial circuits" (whatever that means)....a good start point would be to follow the "Country Cups circuit like they have done in Victoria....and to be fair, the Busselton series encapsulating the holiday season is a winner, credit where credit is due......I could go on but won't. Have a read, it sounds like someone has listened, at least they are thinking about doing something to bolster interest. They have done okay with the themed nights, Chinese New Year Years and so on but when only 5,000 turn out for Inters Grand Final....there were 15,000 at Young Mister Charles's win back whenever that was, then we have a problem. Could we see a return to standing start features (Freo Cup over 3200m like the NZ Cup) as part of a Fremantle Theme, the "Month of Fillies and Mares", the "Four Year Old Month of Greatness", heat racing for the Pacing Cup with points tallies, revive the Easter Handicap (heats again), a stayers series (3200m Easter Cup, Marathon Stakes), the "Winter Series" for the Winter Cup, August Cup etc on as Riders suggested a Sunday rather than a freezing Winters Night....just thought bubbles and again, dodging the "living in the past " pie throwers ....but it seems they are going to at least look at things. MAkes for an interesting read, what comes out of it will be critical to survival.

Standing start trotters event last Monday at Menangle was a spectacle with the club running 19 starters. Kudos to them for at least attempting something different. Realise they have the track size to do that but still a great idea and created much interest.
Meanwhile pacing in Perth and we all love it but it's the same ole same ole every week...do something different occasionally! Run a race over 800 metres. Run one over 4000 metres. Whatever! We need rejuvenation here - winter coming up soon - run Sunday daylight family friendly meetings at GP with free admission instead of freezing cold Friday night meetings then around spring time coinciding with the warmer weather switch back to Friday nights. Utilise Gloucester Park and its location to the fullest. Sunny Sunday's at GP - better than freezing Friday nights at GP. Give Friday night to the country clubs in winter. Turnover will still be strong. It's only for a short period of time but it's worth it.

Tonight at Burwood Park there are eight races with seven long odds on favourites. The previous survey conducted by the honchos came up with the fact that in the majority of punters eyes there are too many odds on favourites that go around in Western Australia. Never before since following pacing from an early age have seen an era of continual odds on favourites. Betting is meant to be stimulated not stymied. With continual declining turnover and surveys that lead to nowhere its no wonder that punters have left the game in droves.
