Last Saturday night first race at Albion Park Unitab guaranteed a trifecta pool of two hundred thousand dollars. Meaning if the pool got up to say $190000 they foot the other $10000. As it turned out the final pool got to $248400. They didn't have to put in a cent. Point to make is...what a great idea...you guarantee $200000 and the punters come out in droves to invest. Doesn't mean the trifecta is going to pay any more or less but it does enable if you wish to be able to take 10,20,50 times and not be 'killing' the dividend. Previously they were guaranteeing around 10k...they took that to a new level of 200k and the punters came through with flying colours.
There is no carryover money or anything like that...it's simple we guarantee punters a pool of 200k if it reaches 150k we put in the other 50k...guess what they very very rarely have to put in! It's the best kept secret to increasing turnover. The proof is in the pudding...guarantee $200k get over $248k and Unitab takes its 20%...it's clever , it's punter incentive, it's a no brainer.

Good competitive standing start...like Waltzing With Cullen for a place...was ok from the stand at Narrogin. If gets away safely and can manoeuvre through the field should be at least placed with a chance of winning.
Race 3. Looks a deadset quinella Mista Shark and Ideal Tyson. Favouring Ideal Tyson to win and also from barrier 8 drawn behind Mista Shark is I'm Lisart should get the soft run and be placed. With a slight chance of running second if the pressure goes on a fair way out from home. Like the trifecta and first 4 with Shark, Tyson and Lisart all to figure prominently.

Looking at races now live and on Sky feel that reinsmen/reinswomen are a much more conservative bunch today than in the past. We all raved on about the Gary Hall Jnr. drive several weeks ago on Beaudienne Boaz when he took the risk, caught them napping and won the race, and rightly so it was a terrific drive. However drives like that were much more commonplace in previous decades. Less lightning moves are done now , drivers more content to sit where they lob..pegs are happy not to push off because the runs are coming 99% of the time. Recall Mark Reed at his peek taking them on many times...on occasions it paid off other times it didn't but he didn't die wondering. Also the lesser drivers of a previous time who use to 'attack' from the word go seem to have evaporated. Can recall being at Richmond Raceway where on a tight track five or six races in a row the speed would be right on and the swoopers always prevail. Can you imagine pacing on the Fremantle track now ? It would be leader , leaders back , breeze , one out one back every race . Many of the drivers have become more Geoff Boycott less Viv Richards.

I am often reading about a poor performance being blamed on a "virus", often confirmed the next day by the trainer submitting a vet's report. Detail in the media or stewards reports is often scant....a low level virus or a respiratory virus or some unspecified virus. What intrigues me is how the results are obtained so quickly, how specific they are, estimated recovery time.....some must be very "low level", as 2 weeks later the horse races again, and how are the other horses in the stable quarantined from catching the virus. I have seen instances of a horse racing on a Friday night, or a Saturday and a "late report"from the trainer to the stewards being lodged the next day or on the Monday morning advising them of viral infection.. Are these viruses detected by blood test, do Vets and Labs operate 24/7, are they antigen present/antibody present/DNA present of culture grown samples that are used ....my experience of blood testing is that it takes days/weeks to obtain virology reports (as opposed to standard blood tests which can be done very quickly), so how do they get these complex techniques completed and results provided overnight or on a weekend? We humans don't receive such levels of service. Also, although viruses differ in their affect on different individuals, closed environments like stables are ideal for spreading viruses, regardless of their contagion transfer ability, respiratory viruses in particular...a one in, all in scenario. Stabling on race day in tie up stalls, wash down bays, swab boxes etc would also be a good place to spread a virus Maybe an initial report is lodged by the vet indicating illness, uitilising elevated temperature as a symptom or the like, but presumably follow up laboratory results are lodged with the stewards who may/should, depending on the results issue a statement to the public, saying "horse will be fine after 2 weeks/3months off or what ever, and back trainer "X's" horses with caution as his stable is potentially infected. I am not suggesting anything here, that a trainer or vet may do anything other than is in the best interests of the animal or trying to hide anything but some horses seem to recover quickly, others never race as well again, and info to the public is very light on in this area. Shouldn't make the channel 7 news but some info would be good for transparency.

Terrific clash coming up between Billies A Star (1) & Ima Connosieur (8) the barrier draw has brought them a little closer together...as impressive as Ima Connosieur has been culminating in leading all the way at Pinjarra Billies run in the same race was excellent. Can be a little ungainly but if does everything right tomorrow night and even possibly hold the lead might take some stacking as the underdog. First 100 metres may decide the race.

Worth watching this race replay on Harness Australia...it's a good example of something you rarely see anymore and that's two horses attacking hard for the early lead and not relenting...wasn't totally extreme and have seen worse...but of course both of them knocked up and were beaten down the back straight..even the commentator said words to the effect of hardly surprising. Anyway the point is that it actually gave the swoopers a chance! Two horses attacking each other after the start and persisting is becoming a rarity. What these two drivers/horses did actually helped to 'liven' a race up. Rightly or wrongly.

Very sad news that Fred Hough passed away aged 86, another of the truly great drivers of the past. I did cover Fred in the Top 50 thread some time ago (January 2015) and some of the top horses he was associated with.....the incomparable Frosty Nelson, the ageless Blue Pennant and the truly brilliant Red Vicar......along with some amusing asides. No laying out the back of the cart with flailing reins from Fred, always crouched low and fully reined up. He was a cold and astute money driver and a master horseman. His daughter was married to the late Ross Keys, and along with his Dad Arthur, formed one of the foundations families of WA Trotting.
On a further sad note, Vera Johnson, a wonderful person in her own right, joined her much loved husband Max after also passing last week. The pillars of the past continue to inevitably crumble.

Late Report – Gloucester Park 21 October 2016

Race 7 – Mount Eden Pace

Following a letter received by Denis Borovica Racing Integrity
Manager R.W.W.A subsequent to the running of Race 7 MOUNT EDEN PACE run
at Gloucester Park on 21 OCTOBER 2016, Harness Racing Steward Form
Analyst Trevor Styles was directed to review the Race and Betting on the
event

Mr Styles reported that

“The start was as predicted with LIBERTYBELLE MIDFREW NZ.
holding the front without any contest for the lead. A lead time of 37.5
was very moderate for an open class race and as a result BEAUDEINE BOAZ
NZ. was able to go forward and head the one out line. Thereafter the
First Quarter of the Last Mile was 29.8 a moderate section and not
surprisingly the driver of BEAUDEINE BOAZ NZ. commenced to put pressure
on the leader with the next Quarter 28.2 and then 27.1 with Final
Quarter 28.7 times that are not abnormal times for Gloucester Park with
a Mile Rate of 1.54.3. In my opinion every driver in the race gave
their drives the full opportunity to obtain the best possible position
in the race.”

A review of all wagering data did not give rise to any concerns or unusual support for any runners.

The Stewards did not have any issues with the running of this race on
the night and have since reviewed the race as is routine for all races.
It was noted that the average lead time over 2130m at Gloucester Park
in the last 12-months was 37.38 which includes juvenile and country
front races, so the 37.5 was well below average for the class of horses
competing. Given the slow lead time the leader LIBERTYBELLE MILDFREW NZ
was running, the pressure applied by BEAUDINE BOAZ NZ was reasonable and
consistent with similar times run over the final half mile when it
previously won on 30 September 2016.

The Stewards were in agreement with the opinion of the harness form analyst and satisfied as to the running of this event.

Interesting to watch a replay of the first race at Albion Park on Harness Australia and see the difference in drives on the 9 & 10....the difference between making the choice of whether to go 3 back the pegs or stay in the one out line. The 2 main chances drawn 1 and 8...leader , leaders back...9 decides to stay one out line...10 goes 3 back at 80/1...the difference in runs especially with ground saved is remarkable. This is an era of rail/peg driving of the like never seen before.
