Race 1. Old favourite The Storm Chief settles 3 back the pegs...going to be leader , leaders back , three back the pegs race..a 2-18-18 speciality and at the good odds. Robbie Williams normally a very good driver..just when The Storm Chief is coming through on the slipstream decides to come off the pegs..Darren Kerr drive who can only run a place if Williams comes off..says thank you very much I'll take that pegs run. End of story. Worth looking at the replay to see why staying on the pegs is not such a bad thing. Be patient the run will come!

With all the goings on in the National Party as Bear Grylls and Terry Redman slog it out, one of the outcomes is that Colin Holt has relinquished his portfolios so that Grylls can return to Cabinet. So one way or another, we will get a new Minister for Racing, thus ending the reign of possibly the most underwhelming light weight non event of a Racing Minister we have ever had. To have a conversation with this fellow about racing was one of the more intriguing exchanges I have ever had....for all the wrong reasons. Nice enough chap but dear oh dear, why on earth did they give him a portfolio....any portfolio. Now, I wonder if Bear and Barnett are on the same page re the sale of the TAB.

Pools for the place had fluctuated all day bewteen 2 and 4k...A lot of the 16k appears to have been invested on the 2 dog. Returning money back for a place.
With a jockey father and working around the stables as a schoolboy I guess you could say I was destined to become a horseman.
I drove my first winner in 1950 and retired with a total of 677 metropolitan winners in a driving career that spanned a little over 30 years. I headed the Perths Drivers Premiership 3 times and was twice runner up.
In 1968 I was the nations leading driver with 99 winners narrowly missing being the first Australian driver to drive 100 winners in a season.
During 1969 at one meeting I had 5 drives on the 7 event programme at Gloucester Park and all 5 saluted. That made me the first West Australian and only second Australian to drive 5 winners at a metropolitan meeting. Eventually in 1979 I became the first West Australian based driver to drive 100 winners in a season.
People have said that their was none better than me at cajoling, lifting or kidding to a horse in a close finish. Fortunately I was rarely off the mark as bookmakers and legions of punters of the time will attest to. Who Am I ?

From the very beginning I was destined to work with horses, I was the third in my family to go into the business. My grandfather was reasonably successful at harness racing. He decided that WA had a better future in the horse racing business than South Australia . He put his eldest son on a boat and shipped a couple of horses across and the rest of the family got in an old Buick and followed the telegraph line to Perth. My grandfather instilled in my family that 'near enough is not good enough'.
I grew up in Carlisle with horses in the backyard, we were surrounded by bush and there were not many bitumen roads. I left school at 13. It took me a long time to be successful and I didn't make a living until my late 20s. My success grew as both trainer and driver but I was always being compared to my father and uncles.
When I won my first premiership the newspaper wrote that I 'had finally won a premiership' but I'll 'never be the equal of my uncle'. My uncle won 11 premierships. As time went by I won 16 so I feel satisfied with that.
One thing about me you may or may not know ...'I'm a lot more comfortable in the company of horses than people'. Who am I ?

Was alerted to this June 22 press release from the obviously very self centred Harness Racing Victoria Communications Manager about Any Gath joining the 2000 Club for winners trained:

"One of only 11 trainers to have reached the 2000 winners milestone – the
others we know of being Lance Justice (3384 wins), Steve Turnbull
(3272), Bill Dixon (2833), Peter Manning (2593), John Justice (2358),
Julie Weidemann (2312), Paul Fitzpatrick (2291), Gary Hall Senior
(2260), Darrel Graham (2239) and David Aiken (2068) – Gath says he is
“proud to be in such illustrious company”.

HRV's data base obviously is far from complete.....Fred Kersly Jnr and Trevor Warwick are well over the 2000 mark and possibly others as well. You would think that someone trumpeting the very fine achievement of Andy Gath and who parades under the illustrious tile of "Communications Manager" might want to (a) check his facts or (b) update his data base. I know the information to correct the records is out there but "correct" history is clearly not important.
