So the drive on Phoenix Warrior is deemed unacceptable.....trapped wide from gate 8, 4 wide into first turn, few options other than go forward 3 wide, then breezes, didn't seem to apply undue pressure on the leader (a 30.5 middle quarter), then has had enough at the 400m and drops right out. Good case for victim of circumstances for a horse that works into its races but fair enough, deemed unacceptable and Lauren Jones cops 4 weeks.

I'm Batman goes to the breeze, is said to have pulled hard....in its 3 goes at grinding a known leader who was never going to give up the lead.....but no action taken, stood down 6 days and a trial. C.D.Brown is a very, very good driver......but the stewarding seems very inconsistent.

Colonial Quaddie "Who Are We" ?

The term "colonial bred" is tossed around a fair bit...very hard to define as all standard breds are from imported stock but its generally agreed that "colonial sires" revolve around horses like Globe Derby, Aachen and so on and other early NZ imports featuring Light Brigade, U Scott, Grattan Loyal etc prior to the wholesale importation of large numbers of line bred USA blood like Thor Hanover, Royal Dollar, Dick Adios etc.
Now, these 4 horses are as colonial as Governor Macquarie's kids. All 4 raced almost exclusively in WA barring some occasional forays over east, all 4 raced in the late 60's/70's era, all were multiple feature race/classic winners at Gloucester Park, all were handled by the leading trainer/drivers of the day and they all won a heat of the Interdominion Championship.
Horse 1 was a classic colonial bred of the fading (now dead) Globe Derby line with his sire being a NZ champ....black as soot and possessed of brilliant speed. Country domiciled trainer. Immensely popular classic winning little horse, who of the four, had the most success over east.
Horse 2 was the the toughest of tough mares and on breeding from the now defunct Wrack line, shouldn't have been able to run out of sight. Initially country domiciled. Pacing Cup winner and a fan favourite....a dour stayer with a Kardashian rear end, and like Kim, no oil painting.
Horse 3 was described by his trainer driver, a classics winning WA Pacing Cup winning driver, as being the best horse he ever sat behind and that he was "robbed" of a least placing in the Inters Grand Final and his sire, serving only a handful of mares in his restricted private capacity, boasted an unbelievable strike rate (46 live foals for 32 winners at an average of over $10,000 stakes earned per winner when stakes were very low), being from a very old NZ Stormyway breed. So good was he that he gave horse 1 a head start and a hiding in a WA Sires Produce.
Horse 4 was also a breeding freak and should have, on breeding, been battling to win a maiden in his home town in the Great Southern region. Hailing from a hopeless performing sire, both on track and in the breeding barn (the best that can be said was that he had some Garrison Hanover Jack Potts blood) I was one of his only 10 winners, only 4 of whom broke 2.10. The most handsome of handsome horses who won his biggest feature race for NSW ace Lawrie Moulds.

If all four of them could talk, they would all tell you that "we was robbed, we should have won the Inters Grand Final....and none of them ever did. It's one for us old timers, I know, but a few of the students of GP should nail a couple, if not all.

My dad was a very good horse winning 13 races whilst my mum took things a little easier, she was unraced. My debut run was not great, I finished last in a CO race at Gloucester Park in late 1999. Less than 5 years later I was squaring off with the best in an Inter Dominion Final at the same track.
It took me 16 starts and more than 2 years before I broke out of maiden ranks with a win at Harvey as a 6yr old. Middle of 2002 I transferred to another trainer and it took me 9 starts to win a race for him.
This win was at Pinjarra as a 7yr old and I had a new driver. We clicked immediately , we won 6 times and added a trio of second placings at my next 10 runs.
By now I had well and truly graduated to city class. That season I won 10 out of 39 starts and had another 16 placings..I went from earning just on $3600 to over $62000. My best season though was in 2003/04 as an 8yr old. My mountain was climbed that year when I made my appearance in an Interdominion Final...I gathered 33 points in the heats finishing the 5th highest points scorer. The winner of the Final qualified with 31 points. In my heats I ran 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I finished 7th in the Final but was proud to be ranked in the nations top dozen horses.
As an 8yr old I had 44 starts for 9 wins 16 places and stakes of over $97000.
As a 9yr old I had my 2nd best season with 31 starts for 6 wins 6 places and a further $80000 in stakes. My 6 wins were all at Gloucester Park and I didn't win a feature race but I was runner up in a Parliamentarians Cup , third in a Fremantle Sprint and 4th in the Celebrity Sprint.
At the time I was the only 9yr old or older pacer to better a 1:55 rate in a race in Australia over a distance greater than 1 mile.
I had another 20 starts as a 10 year old adding another $26745 to the bankroll and I finished 4th in the Pacing Cup. I kept on keeping on. From that very first start at Gloucester Park and its last placing I raced a further 185 times , I won just the 27 races but I ran many placings against the 'best of the best' earning $268226. Was I underrated by some ? Who was the driver I clicked with ? And Who am I ?

I grew up in Merredin where my dad trained horses as a hobby. When we moved to Fremantle I began an apprenticeship as a printer. But spent every spare moment at nearby stables keen to learn more about horses. I attended the Perth Reinsman School and drove my first winner in September 1963. I had found my calling.
My ambitions were to win a Pacing Cup and Fremantle Cup and when my stable grew, to become WA 's Leading Driver and Trainer. In 1986/87 I was acknowledged as Australia's leading trainer with 138 winners. I drove more than 2000 winners 1176 of them at Gloucester Park. I trained Group 1 winners across 3 Australian states and spent 6 competitive years in the USA where my winning streak continued.
Punters liked to call me 'Tricky'. Other judges called me a quality horseman. Who am I ?

The remarkable record of Bridgetown owner breeder John Awcock continues to grow...When Disco Under Fire won at Pinjarra on Monday to break his maiden status, it was the 25th individual "Disco" winner (Hilmore Disco also won on the same programme) made all the more remarkable as all 25 of them trace from the 1960's mare Lady Meadows...a Perc Hall bred Van Hall mare that won 2 races with a best mile rate of 2.22.7. Lady Meadows, however, was the dam of multiple classic winner and Fremantle and AG Hunter Cup winner Trunkey Sting...and more importantly for the Awcocks, the dam of Highway Blitz, a mare that they acquired to race (which they did successfully) who has produced Disco Invasion 1.58.9, Disco Maker 1.57.1, Disco Sulinka 1.57.7, Luva Disco and Disco Power.
Lady Meadows also produced Butterfly Trunkey...dam of 10 foals for 9 winners, 4 in 2.00 minutes including Tailamade Lombo, Espeshlimade Lombo and a succession of about 40 other "Lombo" winners. The one foal of Butterfly Trunkey who never raced was Madam Butterfly which the Awcocks acquired and who is the progenitor of a remarkable 14 winners of multiple ...and I mean multiple group races...all with the "Disco" moniker. Disco Force 1.53.8, Disco Flyer 1.52.4, Disco Lights 1.57.5, Disco Diva 1.56.0, ......et al ...leading up to the modern day Johnny Disco 1.55.8, Courageous Disco 1.56.5...a breeding line that is very much alive and still producing. Some luck?? Yes, for sure... some breeding prowess?...with out any shadow of a doubt. Arguably, for a low volume breeder, the best record in WA .....by a fair margin....from just 2 foundation mares.

Some things defy logic - when your Dad is an out and out champion of the track.....brilliant, no other word for it......and your Mum is so close to being a champ, it's not funny.......the mating from heaven ....and your own career starts in a blaze of glory with a picket fence including a 2yo Classic win......and yet you fade to obscurity with your last 17 runs not registering a single placing. Longevity shouldn't have been an issue....Mum was a tough as teak group 2 winning, multiple group1 and Grand Circuit placed winner who was still winning at 7 years of age against top company at the Valley after originating from WA. Dad was a multiple Group 1 winning champion blitzing everything in existence in his career ...and though not quite as brilliant at stud, still produced 180 winners of nearly $6 million....I wasn't a complete dud but only 4 of my 15 wins were "city stakes" races and my last win was at the old York track about 12 years ago. The breeding line was strong....my full sister produced an Australian 2yo of the year, my mum produced 7 individual winners....and I ended up in a riding school!!!!

Big night at GDP on Saturday with the Nursery Stakes Finals worth $33.5k each. After watching the replays, I think there were 6 living things on course, not including the participants and the 2 Clerks of Course, the Mobile Driver and the well tended shrubs in the main straight. 8 races and such value for punters...the first 7 winners ranged from $1.00, 3 at $1.10, a couple at $1.30 and an "outsider" at $1.70. The diehards, both of them, had to wait until race 8 for a boilover at $5. E.J.Stewart pops over from Vic and takes the cash home in 3 races....yep, Harness Racing is going beautiful in SA. It reminded me to be thankful for what we have.

10 year old Romulus, who won an R3+ at Kellerberrin today, won 7 of his first 8 starts in very good company at Addington for D.J.Dunn way back in 2009/2010. Later in 2010, he won an M1 at Harold Park for Greg Bennett, before heading to WA. The last win I can find for him was a C2+ at Narrogin in 2015, and before that, a heat win in the 2014 Christmas Gift for M0 to M3 pacers. Obviously, clever placement by the connections such that a $110,000 plus stake earner can waltz up to Kellerberrin and compete against R classified horses.......and win easily at odds on...or is there a gaping hole in the handicapping system that allows this to occur?

Another in the "I was pretty good but a bung leg eventually got me" series. And I would also qualify for both "The Unluckiest 3yo Award" and, when finally reaching fast class company, the "I hate the sight of this bloody horse who keeps beating me"series.
I was conceived up in the Hills around Woorooloo when my mum met up with a handsome but not overly successful son of Overtrick. I went through the sales ring and ended up in a prominent stable with two very high profile owners. I won my first start as a 2 year old in such a dominant performance that I inherited the "potential champion" moniker.
I raced in the major 3yo Group 1 races and ran 2nd in all 3 and history repeated itself in my 4yo career, again thwarted by bad luck, before leg injuries curtailed my career. I was off the scene for years at a time before returning to reach fast class. Again, there was a nemesis to my success and I ran 3rd to the same horse in 3 major fast class features, before finally claiming a major race. I was transferred to a number of different trainers and contested an Interdominion Series over East but broke down. After another 16 month absence from the track I returned to win and be placed in 2 major provincial cup features. I changed camps yet again and finally bowed out of racing with 2 successive wins in claimers at GP as a 9 year old. In all, I wracked up 23 wins and 28 places.
