When I was born I just happened to be the spitting image of my old man. He was a bad beginner but was a tough old bloke. My mum showed ability as a 2 year old but an accident prevented her from racing. My career did not start very well I was banned after my first trial and subsequently at my next 2 trials I was ordered to stand well behind the others. That caused me to lose interest. My trainer was going to geld me but thank goodness he decided to be patient with me a bit longer. He then snuck me into a trial where the starter didn't know me. I lined up with the other horses raring to go , I lost 100 metres at the start but got up and won. Now lining up with others I felt confident and more determined. After losing all the ground I had something to prove. My career began in the hazy days of a Febuary summer in 1978 at Wagin of all places. I began badly got checked twice and ran 3rd. Two months later I went to a mobile at Pinjarra and got the biscuits in fast time. By the time I was 5 I had raced 30 times for 21 wins. 17 of them in a row. I was now developing a cult following. A lot of my track work was done on the sand dunes at the beach.
My nickname was 'the Black Flash'. I lived until I was 30 enjoying a life of luxury. Was I champion ? That's for you to decide...Who am I ?

Lets see how long this one lasts?

I was a brilliant, unsound, erratic, bred in the purple horse by Booth Hanover with a dam line rich in blue blood. My race winning mum carried the classic Lordship/Garrison Hanover cross and she produced 7 quality winners. I only had 38 starts but had a winning percentage of 45%.

I won my first start as a 3YO in 1990 at Richmond Raceway but caused a fair bit of chaos and was stood down and sent back to trials. My trainer who was starting to forge a name for himself persisted but I was uncooperative. After a number of unplaced runs followed by some country wins, I got my act together and won a 3YO Classic at start number 10. I then went sore and was stood down from racing. After a spell I returned, won a couple of minor races but raced erratically and yep, stood down again for 14 days and 2 trials after a phenomenal 4th in the WA Derby.

2 starts later I won my second 3YO classic for big dollars and then spelled for 6 months. I returned to put together a picket fence of 4 wins including a 4YO Classic and was talked about as the next "super star" but I went sore again and spelled for 8 months.

I returned for some unplaced runs, a minor win and a 2nd in a group 3 Cup run in winter in which I went sore again and it seemed all over. Off to the paddock for 10 months. However, I was bought back by a kind legendary trainer in the twilight of his career, who revived my fortunes to drive me to 3 excellent wins and 4 placings, including an unlucky 3rd in another Group 3 Cup run in winter (which I protested after being severely interfered with), from my last seven starts. That was it, a very promising career all over due to my dodgy legs.....and I was just getting the hang of this racing caper.

One of my favourite races coming up this Friday with a potentially great clash. Been going for 46 years this race under various formats...fillies. 4YO mares, older mares etc.....nearly won it with Gleaming (as a 3yo) back in 1977 but ran into Kiwi Cloud (a 5YO)...and won by some great mares over the years. But with Major Reality, Quite A Delight and Tricky Styx, the quality is right up there and the draw will be critical. They ran 1,2,3 in the Oaks last year and all 3 in great form plus plenty of other good mares going around. (Leda McNally, Millwood Faith??)
Major Reality, 19 starts, 12 wins (the last 6 in a row) and 4 placings, $206k and a 1.54.7 record, Quite A Delight, 15 starts, 9 wins (last 5 in a row) and 4 placings, $97k and a 1.54.0 record, Tricky Styx 32 starts, 14 wins (4 out of last 5, being knocked out of the race in the other one), 9 placings, $254k and a 1.54.1 record.
Have really warmed to Tricky Styx...noticed in the gear changes that Jesse Moore has stretched her out from a 60 inch hopple length to a huge 64 inches....and I might be imagining things but she seems to be travelling a lot more comfortably....love it that Jesse keeps trying new things to try and improve her and she is a big chunk of a mare. Yes, the draw will be crucial but potentially a great race coming up.
Some of the names that have won it in the past include Miss Dundee (Max Johnson), Bellagena (twice) for FRK, Kiwi Cloud (twice) for Lou Columbera and Kevin Keys, Palais Princess (FRK), Burrows (Colin Joss), Murdoch Miss (Jimmy the Jet), Smooth Gale and Mazzini Magic for Tricky, Golden Goddess (3 in a row for Schofield/Duffy), Sand Pebbles, She's Royalty, Ima Spicey Lombo and the last two won by Sensational Gabby. Always a good race.....think the $50k prizemoney is a little thin.

Tonights meeting in the Riverina of NSW- Race 5 - the betting - there should be an inquiry - and an internal audit conducted by the TAB - as to whether anybody got on late - as in the last 200-300 metres

In all the other races tonight at Junee - there is about 12k in the win pool and 4k in the place pool - bu tnot race 5 - a very lowly assessed race - theres a whopping 30k in the win and 13k in the place ( all put on late)

There was a $1.75 fixed odds favourite ( thats what it started at fixed odds) - it led and fainted at the 300 metres - the horses who were challenging and ran 1st to 4th - were all smashed on the tote( ended up miles under their fixed odds price ) so much so that with 30k in the win pool - the favourite ( who was gonzo ) ended up on the tote at the amazing odds of $6.30 a win and $3.80 a place

Ive allways wondered in this technology age - can smarties get on in the run - like that race it was like - the favourite is gone - we will just smash the 4 horses who look a chance of winning at the 200 metre mark - the stewards - the TAB audit division should be all over that race

They should erect a statue of Shardon's ...somewhere...as a monument to the Standard bred.

He had his first start on the 2nd of November, 2007 in New Zealand and won just once from his 6 starts before heading to Victoria where he put together 5 wins in a row, 2 at Moonee Valley. He raced regularly all over Victoria and Tasmania up until May 2011 when he had his first start in WA, winning first up at Narrogin. And here he is on Feb 15th at Pinjarra some 5 years later and he wins his 36th race (74 placings) from his 246th start and rates 1.55.5 over 2185m and takes his stakes earnings to over $506k.....I do just sit and shake my head in wonder at him (and his unconventional Trainer Tony)...and the way he won yesterday, you would think there a more wins left in him. He's going for a short spell this week but will be back this Friday at GP....and will probably trial on Sunday at Byford before heading to Pinjarra next Monday.

Has been unlucky in major races....won the Navy Cup and the Ascot Gold Cup in Hobart....but 2nd in the Hamilton Cup, Nyah Cup, BOTRA Cup, Brennan Cup, Media Guild Cup, Parliamentarians Cup and The Lord Mayors Cup.....and 3rd in the Charlton Cup, Wedderburn Cup, Porter Memorial, BOTRA Cup, Stratton Cup and The Parliamentarians Cup. You have to smile a bit when you think of old Shardon's and Tony.

Just wondering if one of the greyhound lovers could tell me how the track is shapping up? I was out that way for work today so I had a bit of a drive around, looks significantly smaller in both the track itself and the area available for any ammenities (I always thought that area was massive but when you start construction on it shows the eye can play tricks). Also looked a country mile away from being ready to race on, I know these things can come together quickly during the finishing stagesso hopefully that is the case.

Fingers crossed it turns out to be a great facility.

With the announcement made recently that soon standing starts will be a thing of the past in Victoria , let's hope that WA doesn't follow suit and thereby end a great tradition and skill in harness racing. Stands may not be everyone's cup of tea but to end them all together is a great shame. Was stated that it was a very courageous decision by Harness Racing Victoria to cease standing start events. Please. The opposite may be closer to the mark...weak and narrow minded would be more apt.
