Good to see what the handicapper thinks of our form in WA. Am I missing something in his selection of the Oaks Prelude field?

3C0 Or Better. 3YO Fillies. Preference in field selection to 3yo fillies assessed 3C1+. WINNER OF THIS RACE WILL BE EXEMPT FROM THE BALLOT FOR THE WA OAKS AT GPM 08-05-15.

How does Straighttothehilton not get a run ahead of The Deserter. Is it purely on the NZ after The Deserters name???? I think I'm a reasonable reader, I'm ok with numbers too. I always thought that 0 was less than 1 and I'm really confident it's less than 3! So how do two 3C0s get into the field ahead of a 3C3 and a 3C1???

The Deserter has a career claim to fame of running a 3rd at Addington then was an absolute flop first up in WA. Fay Darling has won 1 race worth $6900, ran an 18m last in the first oaks prelude. Again has the NZ tag. Foxy Dame comes with one win to it's name, this time at Ashburton again with the NZ. Sporty Anna is unfortunately missing the NZ tag but starts with the clearly superior career record of 1win in a Yarra Valley 3C0 to go with 1 placing, a 12.6m last at its last Vic start prior to going around at $41.70 and being beaten 21.1m into 5th in an inspiring WA debut. To really make the field selection process clear Indy Jean gets to start her career in the heat after running second in a Byford trial where they ran home in a blistering 31.3 seconds.

In time all these fillies may be better than Straighttothehilton and to a lesser extent Racketeer Reactor. As it stands now though Straightothehilton is the reigning age group Westbred winner, a winner of 6 races and over $113 000. At a time when we are being pushed into Westbred horses she is a pin up and if nominated has to be in that field. The only possible reason I can see for others getting in ahead of her is if noms were extended and they had nominated prior but still surely she gets in a head of anything else.

It really grinds my gears that Friday nights which should be the best of the best and for those who deserve it, week in week out caters for mediocrity. Get the best horses racing on a Friday night, the ones who deserve to be part of the showcase meeting.

Thought the racing last week was fantastic but just this Oaks heat field has really got up my goat.

For what it's worth I think Im justforyou at $17 with Sportsbet is worth a few dollars EW. Ourblackbird/Copagrin exacta, really liked how Copagrin trialled the other day. If Sayitnow gets out to a crazy price he's worth an EW ticket too as the speed should be on in that race and I thought he would have given Hes on fire a bit of fright last week if he got out earlier.

Can't wait to see The Bucketlist go around again sat night, to me that is the highlight of the weekends racing.

With the derby on this week, and a likely 2 horse war between Beaudiene Boaz and Kiwi Legend.....and not discounting a few others as well with the draw being very significant (backline for those 2 and All Aussie Boy on pole haha...I think he will be a bit outclassed but lets make it a race), a retrospective view from the past.
To be honest, it used to be a terrible race years ago....young horse racing was not the focus that it is today and some of the first derbies I saw were very pedestrian races, with horses breaking up and going in all directions. A few well educated horses won on good manners alone ...and didn't go on to win much else and a few really good ones lost due to poor race manners and developed into stars. Mile rates around 2.12 and 2.13 were the order of the day from the stand and Rising Scott (F.R.Kersley for Joe Petricevich) going 2.09 was huge news, Satanas, a wayward but talented future fast class horse for Les Poyser, went 2.8.75 to hold the race record but the first really "professional" 3 year old that I saw win the race was Master Clan, owned by Alf and Ken Hampton and prepared and driven by the great Jimmy Schrader. He looked every bit the seasoned well educated horse as he zoomed around to dominate the field in 1968 rating a new race record of 2.8.5. Royal Force only went 2.9.3 when he won in 1973 for Geroge Kennett and Jack Retzlaff and we all know what a champ he went on to be. Mount Eden put on a galloping exhibition when 4th to Cawarra for Alan Obrien in 1970 and it was a real hit and miss race. Nowadays, nothing could be further from the truth with Rockleigh Victory holding the race record of 1.56.5 for Scott Stewart and Vinny Knight set in 1989. Following Royal Force in 1973, we had a very green Pure Steel win in 1975 for FRK and Nixon Adios repeated for FRK in 1976 signifying Jesse Moore's arrival as a serious preparer of young horses. Special Garry in 1979, San Simeon over Gammalite in 1980, the great Bill Duffy Mare Via Vista in 1981, Smooth Dave for Boof Anderson in 1982, Gay Boyden for Val Pereira in 1983......the race now had a completely different complexion, it was a high stakes, quality event and Eastern Staters were sending over their best....it was now a true classic. Vinny won with Another Bart in 1988 and the explosive Chandon destroyed them in 1993. Saab was a great winner in 1998, Shakamaker and John Justice claimed the first $100k stake in 1999 and the ill fated I'm Victorious and equally so ill Alta Christiano saluted in 2012 and 2013. Because I saw him win his first ever 2yo race trial at Northam for Jesse Moore, I have a soft spot for Nixon Adios as my favourite Derby Winner....it seemed that the whole town was on course that night and I'll never forget the smile on veteran owner Harold Rice's face as he said to me "I think we've got a goodun son, bloody Jess is a genius and that Fred bloke, he drives okay doesn't he". Harold was a salt of the earth dairy farmer from Cookernup and he epitomised the importance of small time country owners. Class wise, I can't go past Chandon. Will the race record go Friday night??? Who knows but if it is a 2 horse war between the 2 probable favourites, maybe it will and maybe something will get home over the top of them. After the draw, we can all start theorising as to what will happen...potentially fascinating race.

R1: 1 Ideal Justice leads and wins. 3 Basful Compton won well last start and is likely to get the 1,1 behind vertical four who can run ok from the breeze. Major Dancer gets leaders back and will stick on, don’t know if it has a really quick quarter in it and seeing as there doesn’t look to be any pressure on the leader I think they may absolutely hum home so Rivers Of who does have a quick quarter in her may be able to sprint over the top of the 8 into 2nd. Like the FF 1/8,9/8,9/2,3,4,6,10,12
R2: Loving the $20/$4 available on No8 Maggies Mystery. To my eye she is racing very well and will love the soft run on the fence, should be leaders back or at worst 3 back. That will be a good spot to be in this. Get involved! FF:1,8/1,2,8,9/1,2,6,8,9/1,2,6,8,9.
R3: An absolute guess job. Would have thought Voak would have stuck with Mister Hannible so that is a bit of lead but I wouldn’t be backing Lenny when he isn’t off the front. Won’t be playing here, cheering for Hannible as I have a soft spot for him and he’s been good to me.
R4: Romulus holding up should win. If somehow Hez Got The Nod gets to the top he will be hard to beat.
R5: Far more open race than the early markets have it. I think Vapour is really going to be hard pressed to hold up with both Old McDonald and Local Rogue having great gate speed and racing well in front. Even if he does hold up Onedin Crusader will get up outside him and put some pressure on, Graybuck is dropping in class, Indomitable will be motoring and basically the rest of the field are going well.
R6: Obviously if Pacific Warrior leads he wins. I think he will do that as his gate speed and overall ability to get around GP are vastly improved. One fly in the ointment could be Our Blackbird who broke through last start and appears to only race at his best when leading so you would expect them to at least be coming out looking. I’ve just had a couple of dollars on Blackbird at the big odds in case he gets over but not a race to get massively involved in for me.
R7: Not the draw I would have liked for the Derby in terms of making it interesting, I just hope something happens to spark it up. With Reed driving a horse that is a chance maybe it will? I’ve really liked how Military master has been parading and how he has gone on the track but I’d probably want double the odds available though to have a bet on him.
R8: Again going to back The Feather Foot and hope for luck, call me a sucker but I really think he might get it in this.
R9: I do like Fay Darling ability wise but not going to back it here.
R10: No2 Alhambra Rocket has been racing without luck and has a bit of gate speed, at $34 it could give them something to catch in this. That said Simply Susational has been flying and should get over these.

Over from pretty a good strike rate in Victoria for N.Botica ...by a Swedish stallion from a USA mare and only a 6 year old. Could add some spice to some very pedestrian square gaited racing. Also, how good a job is Ashley Markham doing in driving Smokey The Bandit to best advantage given his racing pattern? The horse is holding top form and that was a $25k race the Manea Classic. Another interesting runner/winner was Brian Cousin's El Comacho, a full brother to Lovers Delight and half brother to Braemoor.

Have a look at the charges for this one drive from South Oz. I have watched a race replay, reminded me of one of the wagon drivers in an old Western movie..

Harness Racing SA Stewards finalised the inquiry into Kerry Brown’s drive on TURISMO in the Kapunda Pacing Cup on 1 March 2015.
Evidence was taken from drivers Kerry Brown and David Smith.
Kerry Brown was issued with four charges, those being:
Rule 149(2). A person shall not drive in a manner which in the opinion of the Stewards is unacceptable. The particulars being that after challenging EXPOSED (D. Smith) for the first 500 metres and gaining the lead near the 2100 metres, K. Brown continued to urge TURISMO forward and race clear of the field until near the 1700 metres and instead of giving TURISMO some respite, he again placed TURISMO under pressure near the 1700 metres to resist a challenge from SOUL TANA which had improved three wide. Leaving the 1400 metres he again placed TURISMO under pressure in an unsuccessful attempt to resist a challenge for the lead from PALEFACE JASPER . TURISMO began to give ground from the 600 metres to be beaten 90 metres. Stewards were of the opinion that after placing TURISMO under pressure in the early stages to gain the lead and again under pressure to resist challenges from SOUL TANA and PALEFACE JASPER, he failed to give TURISMO any respite and the effort he asked of TURISMO was beyond that horse’s capabilities. K. Brown pleaded guilty and his licence to drive in races suspended for 8 weeks. In determining penalty stewards believe his unacceptable driving had a negative impact on the image of harness racing.
Rule 163(1) (a) A driver shall not cause or contribute to any crossing, jostling or interference. The particulars being that near the 1200 metres after being crossed by PALEFACE JASPER, K. Brown has allowed TURISMO to shift up the track into a two wide position, and as EXPOSED which was trailing improved and established running to his inside, TURISMO was directed back down the track and as a result EXPOSED was checked and lost a racing position to which he was entitled. K. Brown was found guilty and had his licence to drive in races suspended for 2 weeks.
Rule 168. (1) A person shall not before, during or after a race drive in a manner which in the opinion of the Stewards is careless, reckless, incompetent, intimidatory, improper, foul or likely to endanger persons or horses. The particulars being that near the 900 metres after allowing TURISMO to shift up the track into a two wide position, EXPOSED has again improved to his inside where there was sufficient room and established running to the inside of TURISMO and soon after K. Brown directed TURISMO down the track whilst EXPOSED was racing to his inside in an attempt to regain a marker peg position. As a result EXPOSED was checked and forced down over marker pegs. LAND OF PANAARM which was trailing was also tightened and carried over marker pegs. Stewards were of the opinion that K. Browns driving at that stage of the race was foul. K. Brown was found guilty and had his licence to drive in races suspended for 12 weeks. In determining penalty stewards were of the opinion there was intent to force another runner out of their rightful racing position.
Rule 168. (1) A person shall not before, during or after a race drive in a manner which in the opinion of the Stewards is careless, reckless, incompetent, intimidatory, improper, foul or likely to endanger persons or horses. The particulars being that after tiring over the final lap and finishing 90 metres behind the winner, K. Brown continued to urge TURISMO along after the finish line in an attempt to make ground on the horses that were pulling up in the back straight and he then directed TURISMO toward the back of the sulky of EXPOSED in close proximity to D. Smith. Stewards were of the opinion that K. Brown drove in an improper manner after the finish of the race and his actions were meant to intimidate D. Smith. K. Brown was found guilty and has his licence to drive in races suspended for 2 weeks.
Stewards ordered the penalties be served cumulatively, totalling 24 weeks and should commence at the conclusion of the interference suspension that Kerry Brown is currently serving. Kerry Brown was advised of his appeal rights.
Barbara Scott
Chair of Stewards
