This isn't so much a bitch but more a reflection of where the sport of harness racing seems to be at. I use to hate all the negativity by those in and around harness racing but lately I feel i'm tending more and more that way!

My girlfriend thought a nice christmas present for me would be a membership to the WATA. We won a fremantle membership for last season when having dinner in the Beau Revarge room and were at every fremantle meeting during the last season, comming in at i'd say a third of the age of the average attendee in the members. I mess around/help out in a pacing stable on sundays and if money/time permits i'd like to get a cheap old horse I think can still win a race and try and get my reinsman's lisence. I've owned a share in a couple of slow one's in the past so one would say i'm a semi active participant. I am 28yrs of age.

I was shocked to hear that "due to the recent merger we currently have to many members and you will have to be placed on a waiting list" i.e. they are turning members away! And they wonder why it's a dying sport when in effect I basically have to wait for some of the current members to die before I can get a look in!

Surely relatively young people with more than a passing interest in the sport should be grabbed hold of and never let go not basically shunned. I do get that they may have more members on there books than allocated membership space but I was there Nugget night, if there were more than 10 people sitting in that outside membership area at any one time I will jump from that stand to the track! And it would be a generous assesment to say there were more than 300 people not in the restaraunts. I.E There was vertually no one there on a showcase meeting.

Anyhow my girlfriends assesment was "why don't I just get you one for the turf club". Pretty sure they won't turn me away.

Golden Nugget night sees a very good one contending it with the barrier draw nearly making it a no race but it is racing so well just have to see what happens.

R1: Dundee Three will be very short and looks to good. I like Sports Adda as a banker behind him in the novelties as I see him getting around to the breeze first and then handing up, though Dundee may just work to the front. Take the 1,2,8 from the good draws as well as the 7 and 10 who are racing well.

R2: Think the race for the lead between Change Of Tact and Lavros Conquest is very important with the one who gets there the one that I want to be on. (Who will it be guys??) I think Change Of Tact might get there. Has been racing well without any luck and I think he can lead and win. Some Kind Of Tactics is stepping up a fair way in class, he has some tractability issues and I think he may have some troubles getting around making it hard for both himself and horses like Erris Lad and Dalvey Gold who would be looking to trail him.

R3: Not a bad claimer with Little Sonny Bill being hard to beat again. He should work around to the breeze and sit outside Sonny Armbro. I'm going for one a bit out of form Lukcon Lad. He loves the pegs and shoud settle with the soft run three back the fence. Being a claimer I think a few horses will get tired and Lukcon Lad will get the splits.

R4: McGintysgoat lead and won 4 starts back and I think he can do it again. Artesian Boy is a good horse with a trail, the stables horses that are getting the lovely run have been winning of late and I think he represents the danger. If McGinty's doesn't lead my quads are screwed!

R5: Bit of talent here. Was on Dasher VC first up and he showed he wasn't far from his best. Think that Rakarebel will cross though and can run a mighty race from the front. Mellsop could have something to say about that but I don't think Im Percy The Punter will step well enough to safely be bussled. Love Tartary Gladiatior but don't see how he can get into it.

R6: Don't know much about Brayden Green, can he drive alright? Think he is on a good chance with Sunsets West who is probably equally as good with a sit as leading. If Millwoods Meg charges you'd think he would hand up which would make Meg hard to beat, she's infinatley better infront IMO. Pole Dancer will get a nice suck, Falcon's Medley is flying and Off The Cuff Lombo is very good at the sprint trip.

R7:The Gold Ace leads and wins the Nugget. Was very impressed with Lovers Delight last week, think he can breeze and runa brave 2nd with the 8 and 9 drawn to fight out 3rd.

R8: Backed Reggie Royale last week and it was bolting on the line. It steps safely but not brilliantly but would like to think it could get the front and be hard to beat. Marquee Star has been disappointing for me, could probably lead but isn't racing well enough to warrant being driven that way. Star Of Dalvey racing well and could get a nice trail behind either Captain Dale or Melbournian.

That will do for me, last 2 races a bit skinny but no doubt being there will get involved! What are your thoughts guys?

Justice won't hand up with SU and Junior won't look to do too much off the arm with ITMQ. Mr Feelgood will burst off the arm and get to SU's wheel, then hand up to Franco Jamar for a breather. FJ will be a complete pest down the back and by the time they pass the 400m mark they will be looking at record time.
Stewards report from Kal 10/11/11

GENERAL

ROBS RABBIT (Jason Keys) was a late withdrawal from Race 4, at tonight?s race meeting, when Stewards inspecting the stable of Trainer Jason Keys, found this runner being stomach-tubed prior to the race meeting. Stewards took evidence from Mr Keys, in regards to the incident and notified him that an inquiry would be set for a date and time to be fixed. Stewards took swab samples from all of Mr Keys? runners at tonight?s event.

RACE 3: JAN DOYLE MS PACE (2150M)

SNAPPY RUFUS (Jason Keys) ? Driver was suspended for 21 days under the provisions of Rule 156(3)(b) for an incorrect whip action.

RACE 6: SCOTT & KRISTY BETTERIDGE CONDITIONED HANDICAP SS PACE (2518M)

Driver Jason Keys was questioned in regards to an incident racing out of the back straight on the final occasion, whereby the horse he was driving, BATAVIA JACK, shifted to a position one off the marker pegs after initially leading the field. After questioning Mr Keys, viewing the official film on a number of occasions and acting on their own observations, Stewards charged Mr Keys with improper driving issued under the provisions of Rule 168(1). The specifics of the charge were that, racing out of the back straight on the final occasion, Mr Keys has deliberately shifted the gelding away from the marker pegs to allow a clear run for his stable mate THREE DEEP POCKETS (Matthew Saw), which had been racing behind BATAVIA JACK. Mr Keys pleaded guilty to the charge and his reinsperson?s licence was suspended for a period of 3 months, to take effect immediately. Stewards ruled that this penalty would be served concurrently with the suspension, that Mr Keys had been given earlier in the night, for an incorrect whip action.

I really think there needs to be a change to this rule, back to something like it use to be. I've just read how G Williams recieved an 18 day suspension for "causing a horse to cover more groung than necessary". What a load of wank! If he wasn't in the 3 wide line at that stage then he wouldn't have won the race so it was absolutely necessary.

Real life come 3 wide at about the 1400. He got past Tartary Gladiator by the 1200. Davy Maguire was on Real Life's back at the back of the field before the move and tried to track him but had dropped of by very nearly a sulky's length. That horse had every chance to be on Real Life's back but wasn't filling it's position. What was Williams meant to do, look over his shoulder and go "Gee Real Life would be the perfect horse to trail into the race here but I better not move out becaue it looks like K Harper wants that position too so I better just stay in and wait for him to fill it".

Racing HAS to be competitive. If Williams had of staid in he doesn't win the race and I along with at least a half dozen of my mates I tipped it too along with everyone else out there who backed it would have been saying what a poor drive it was, how GP was now uncompetitive and people just wouldn't be tunning in on friday nights let alone betting. Harness racing in this state is all ready struggling enough as it is for competition with the domination of the big stables at the moment, the rules need to be there to optimise competition and as a result turnover not reduce it. If you can do something to remove the image of "the red hots" then why wouldn't you?

This isn't just a one off. I'm relatievly young (twenty eight) in terms of being a harness racing fan. I used to love the fact that compered to the eastern states our racing was so competitive. Now it's just gone down there boring sit sit sit ok SPRINT! path with half the field being held up. You don't need a bigger track and sprint lanes for competition. I actually think the small track use to creat competition because it makes the lead so valuable. But if the horses at the back and on the inside that are gong well aren't allowed to take the runs of the one's that aren't going well then the horse's who get forward first are just getting far to well rewarded.

My beef.

The following extract is from the Harness Racing NZ website.

Smoken Up judgement
- Result excerpt from written JCA decision

We (the JCA) are satisfied the charge brought against Mr Justice under Rule 1004 (2) has been proved and Smoken Up was connected with a breach of Rule 1004 (1) and (2) when it ran and won the Pacers Grand Final at the Inter Dominion Championship on 8 April 2011, for the purposes of Rule 1004 (8)

We (the JCA) think it appropriate to make it clear the finding the charge brought against Mr Justice as been proved does not carry with it any finding he personally was responsible for Smoken Up's elevated DMSO level when it was presented to race in the Pacers Grand Final on the evening of 8 April 2011. In opening the Informant's case on 23 August 2011 Mr Lange (prosecutor) expressly conceded there was no evidence Mr Justice was "complicit", as he put it, in the sense he personally, or any person with his knowledge , was responsible for the horse's elevated DMSO level and there has been no evidence put before us which suggests otherwise.

We now require submissions from Counsel as to penalty and costs which will include the costs of the Judiciary Control Authority which Mr Lange will have responsibility for. To that end the following timetable is to apply.

(i) Mr Lange is to file and serve on Ms Thomas (defence lawyer) his submissions on penalty and costs within one week of the date of this Decision;

(II) Ms Thomas will have a further week from the date of receipt of Mr Lange's submissions to file her submissions in reply;

(III) Leave is reserved to apply if for any valid reason there is difficulty with that timetable.

DATED at Wellington this 31st day of October 2011

Bruce Squire QC (Chairman) and Professor Geoffrey Hall.

1. M0 M2 F&M 2100m MS Jonty Bromac should have enough to cross from gate 4. She was restrained from the same gate last start as it was clear that Monarco Miss would have enough to hold up. Tonight she should find the front and win. Monarco Miss led and won well last start but the draw will ensure her pattern must change. She is good enough to figure in the finish. Disco Sulinka got back in similar company last week and finished impressively to win. It was a good trip she received but I can see her having to do a bit more in transit on this occasion. Lincoln Beach Girl was finishing well 3 wide last week but took the home bend like a camel. She can lob a position a bit closer to the lead tonight and be place hope. Tough race to start the night.
2.	C2+ 2100m MS What God Knows can get a soft lead here and that is exactly what is required for him to win. His last win was at Harold Park over a year ago now where he led from the start and got a couple of cheap sectionals. This race looks likely to pan out that way. Extreme Bromac is the obvious danger but SR5 is tough for any horse. There doesn?t look to be much pace and he will be forced to use a fair bit in the middle stages to stoke the field up which could be telling. Classy Candidate can fill a hole but only because he will trail the leader for the duration and Lombo Astreos should restrain and take the trail into the race provided by Extreme Bromac.
3.	M0 M1 2100m MS Zanardi drops in class here and will find the front without too much trouble. I expect Robberyto lob the death chair early and these two will dictate terms in what looks to be a leisurely run affair. Amongst Abbey looks to me to be the one who will bring the race alive and bring Zed into the race for a strong finish. I like horses that have had success on country tracks and come to the city soon after; winning form is good form.
4.	TM0+ 2100m MS The trotters are always tough and I would like to thank the club for making this the first leg of the quaddie. Cillas Earl looks the obvious danger; it can lead from gate 5 and dictate terms. Compressor should kick through and ensure that if Cillas does lead it will be well earned. As there will be pace on early the back markers can get a chance. I will be having a bit each way on Our Macarthur Park who will benefit from some early pace. River Red and Nicky Eileen can feature also. In short, go wide on your quaddie.
5.	M0+ 2096m SS Change of Tact is a solid stand start performer and the 20m head start on Artorius will be just enough should he step well. That is the quinella for mine. Hilton Mile High is a horse I have always liked but is very hard to catch; I expect him to do just enough to keep me interested. Dance Band was strong last week and didn?t lose any friends; he will get another cheque tonight. Courageous Ned is another who will be thereabouts in this company
6.	M2+ 1700m MS There are at least 4 of the 7 off the front line who want to lead here which plays right into the hands of the fast finishing Grinjaro. Milwood Meg can log a very fast mile rate and I expect her to get the front with Cromac Johnny happy in the end to take her wheel. Smart Cullen is a good chance of a place as he should get the leader?s back. But I like Grinjaro in a slick mile rate as he should only need to make one run.
7.	M0 M1 1700m MS I can?t go past Borat here. The draw is too good and his main danger, Wrongly Accused, has the outside of the backline so his best chance to win is to burn early and takes the breeze. He is in great form but I think this draw and the way the race will pan out falls right into Borat?s hands. Very nice. My Jasami will get into the race when Wrongly Accused makes his move and Soul Tana will play a part in the finish
8.	M0+ 2902m SS: Pacific Idol has had 6 attempts at this distance and never missed a place, shapes as a very good each way bet. Alzona comes off the 40m handicap but showed last week he is back in form. Glacier Star won the Marathon on 5 August so the conditions will not be a problem for the 8yr old. Davy Maguire gets the lead from G Hall Jnr as his choice of 3 in the race and should be thereabouts despite the 30m
9.	M0 M1 2100m MS Rebel Deago is the obvious leader here and it would be a surprise if it didn?t figure late in the call. I expect Chief Inanga to perform better from the backline draw as he will be forced to sit quietly early and make a later run; he was gassed early last week which didn?t suit. When the Chief makes his charge Goldanova will get moving and I like him as an each way proposition. He had a profitable few days in the Goldfields and comes back to headquarters full of confidence. The only thing that stops me from bacing him outright is he is 0/40 at GP.
10.	C2+ 2100m MS Twisk is the only one I can make a case for here and it isn?t a very strong one. At a push I will throw him in with Habemus, Turbo Gold, and Yagermeister for a quartet. One for the hangers on.
Good luck.

Here we go again with a quick look at friday.

R1: Hilarious Life to lead Chief Inanga to breeze. Think Ina Fashion might make a move a bit earlier this week giving either 7 or 12 a nice trail into it. Leaning Hilarious Life but have been stung by him already this campaign.

R3: Wouldn't be shocked to see Scruncher finally break the metro duck here. See him getting a nice run leaders back and with My Jasami and Onedin Crusader probably both being very well found in the market he could be good each way odds.

R4: Keen Janice Franco. I know it's form is uninspiring but so is the majority of form in this race. I can see her holding up and running a really nice race out in front. If anything will be running on it might be another mare in Secret Interlude. A good odds Harper quinella!

R5: No firm opinion but would love to see Fergie flying over the top of them. Obviously depends on some speed by the 1,2,3 but I can't really see it happning. Can see the 1 being unders here, leave me out.

R6: Another no firm opinion. Pablito a chance to lead all the way, Tartary Gladiator a chance to try zip him at the start. Davy Maguire and Captain Jack Sparrow racing very well.

R7: Mister Gallenti will lead and hand up to Soul Tana
and that will be the end of it. Looks a better race than that on paper but I can't see it being run any different so the resut seems obvious.

R8: Clash of the winter titans again! Back to Has The Answers fav 2100. Really wanted to be on Why Live Dangerously at his next start after last week but not in this! Was massive though. I know everything is in HSA favour from last week but I'll stick with Lombo Navigator again. He didn't disappoint me and he is somewhat of a favourite of mine, they are purely the reasons.

R9: Not sure how Siena Franco or Motu Treasure will get away, due to this I think Royal Opera may be holding the front tonight. With this I see Ohoka Dakota getting a lovely run leaders back and being a great each way chance.

R10: Interested to know here if Kyle Harper had the choice of drives on Rokewood and Governor Johnny. Rokewood was flashy last week, thought he might be able to work his way forward here and be hard to beat but with the 1 likely to hold up Governor Johnny should get a lovely run too. Like to see Protocol held up and try to trail Borat into it.

My Bets

R4 No1 Janice Franco 6/15
R10 No12 Protocol 15/36
R9 No1 Ohoka Dakota 4/4
Couple of sneaky quins R4 The harpers!
All up R4 No:1, R8 No9, R10 No12. 6 units win 12 units place.

See what I get for my $100!
