Interesting. Liberal MP John McGrath calls for the WA TAB to be privatised to pay for critical racing infrastructure.

The moment privatisation happens it will be shareholders, not necessarily racing participants, that will be calling the shots and receiving the dividends of wagering.

The sooner the management of our industry is privatized the sooner we start to make the profits that we require to grow our industry...
Privatization with government controls and auditors put in place has worked okay for Burswood

Would also get rid of the current conflicts of interest with the govt doing all it can to protect the cashcow

in the same manner as the royalties for regions now have to provide all the cost of its administration.
as far as rwwa goes, the conflict of interest is huge, so the racing and wagering should be separate entities, but in public hands still.
maybe i am in favour of nanny state in some instances, but things that involve the potential to harm, like pari mutuel gambling should be in public hands, not lining the pockets of those who don't care how they make their money.

No they aren't wedge, but i see them as services that the governement needs to supply..My own opinion is those services should never have been privatised, as there will always be people who need these services irrespective of thier ability to pay... So i hear you.
I jsut believe that the betting indutry is not an essential serivce that the government needs to provide...manage/audit and police yes.
In relation to Crown packing up and leaving tomorrow. When i last read up on them i can recall the casino being very profitable, so i am fairly certain that there would be a line of people waiting to provide the one and only casino in WA if Crown moved on... Just as in my opinion there would be a line up of people wanting to run the TAB in WA
Correct me if I am wrong but I believe racing's percentage share of WA TAB profits is the highet in Australia. Obviously in dollar terms NSW and VIC receive much greater funding due to population and volume.
Just have a look at he ailing SA industry since the TAB was sold in that state.
