Dont always agree with what DW has to say, especially regarding the administration of racing etc but the bloke does put it out there balls and all. Credit where credit is due, bloke gets verbally bashed from pillar to post and he still fronts up! Thats pretty ballsy in my book.....

Withdrawals have commenced for Perth, a couple of them appear to be well bred yearlings, so hopefully for those Vendors concerned they can get those horses right for maybe an entry in the Winter Yearling Sale.

That winter yearling sale will be packed I think.

ones that don't make the cut for feb sales , people getting out of breeding , people getting out of WA racing with the eastern states tie ups with WA trainers , with the odds of winning a few races gone from 1-20 to 1-50/100

Lame , by your last comment, do you mean the fact Neville spent 800,000k on eastern states yearlings at one sale alone. Must be dissapointing for the breeders here.
  • TheodorTheodor    199 posts
Odds on that Neville spends the most money at the Perth Magic Millions Sales.

Yep a lot of yearlings didn't make if into the first sale will be a last ditch attempt to get some money back and then get out of the game, with low prices and high costs soon it will be only big studs offering yearlings at the sales.
  • DamienWyerDamienWyer    7,660 posts
That will be a tragedy for WA buyers

It's going to go that way I'm sure of that, there will be no hobby breeders unless you have wealth beyond your means the costs are just to high as is the risk. Let's say you went to Oratorio so it's $27,500.00 for the service fee add $2k for transport and costs at stud and then just roughly let's say your mare is served in September so back to ageistment from October until the following December when you start the prep that's roughly $11,700.00 then a 8 week prep $3,100.00 that's at a minimum not including getting the horse to the stud prepping and all the other stuff just 8 weeks at $55. So if you do get your yearling to the sale you are already into the horse for roughly $44,300.00 so to make it with your wile your need 60k al least.

Would this be a fair assessment?

That's if everything went smoothly. Some Stallions have fertility issuesplus some mares just for some reason stop cycling when everything had been going along ok,  extended stays at Stud's can be heart stopping expensive

Not wrong, nothing like having and empty mate still being served in December...

Hobby breeders have been out for the last 2 or 3 years. Perth mm is sad. Go to sa and pay 1/10 the price for a better horse. Better still bring in a breeze up sale.
  • DaleDale    1,346 posts
Wa is the world capital of quick return punters. Allow them to spend and return in 12 months. 1 out of 100 will be happy and that's better odds than buyers are getting now

Some analysis was done a couple of years ago comparing different sales. The most surprising matter IMO was that the Perth Sale was the only sale where if you has acquired every lot (at their respective sale price) you would have derived more prize money (I think this included bonuses) than they cost. No other main stream sale in Australia or NZ was this achievable. I would suggest this indicates that the Perth Sale is the best value for money sale in Australia/NZ. Yes, I am a vendor and want the Perth Sale to be positive.

Agree 100% Theo, every horse i have purchased from the sale that has raced has won a race.....so far, the issue is with hobby breeders that don't have there own property for agistment and a full staff on an hourly rate prepping 15 or 20 horses even more for some big vendors, the costs for the little guy is just to much, after the two mares I have shares in foaled down last year i gave my share to the other 2 owners, I still have one that had a really early serve (5th of September) I'd say this will be the last horse i breed and it will be kept to race.

Anyway good luck this year at the sale.

    no not talking about nev
was speaking mainly smaller/hobby breeders and mates with a mare or 2 , alot i've spoken too are looking at/have chucking in the towel or leasing the better ones out and keeping a very small interest

IMO the Perth Sale is better for buyers than vendors. I concur with TB and Iame. Breeding is a extremely difficult to get a return in WA for small and large breeders. What you need in this game is a good stallion that gets at least 50 outside mares.

For what it is worth, I have taken on a few quality mares owned by hobby breeders over the past few years where we have shared in the resultant progeny. The owners bare no costs but I get my costs back first and we then have a profit share arrangement.
