Hey Lads, any experts on tennis here?

Always love a sneaky punt on the Aussie Open, who is a chance do you think? Novak to win into Li Na 34s at the moment, from memory she plays well in this tournament?

Yeah I'm a Li Na fan she's always a good bet to make the semis, big joe Wilfred a fav as well in the men's draw but always falls short.

Novak into Li na is a good bet

Hate to sound boring but Novak into Serena Williams.

Best smokey in the mens draw is Berdych; never seen him fitter.

In the women's keep an eye on Eugenie Bouchard. Good chance of making the quarters where Williams will likely knock her out. Even if she doesn't get that far you will have a pleasant time watching her.

once again, cheats infiltrating professional sports. Where there's money to be made, there will be cheating.
Was sending results overseas to take advantage of delay in telecasts.

High temperatures are of more concern. The players are finding great difficulty in playing to their usual standards in the intense Australian heat in Melbourne.

    How is that cheating ?
He wasn't betting just communicating up to date info
At a faster speed then telecasts
It doesn't effect the result of the tennis match ?
No different to betting in running at the races on
    Course ?
It doesn't effect the outcome of the race
Sure it's And edge but is that illegal ??

    Brady, it definitely is illegal!
He was using the information to bet on outcomes that had already occurred. It IS cheating.

How had the outcomes already occurred? Are you sure he was betting on the next point? Can you direct me to a bookie who will take such a bet? All that I know of offer the next game at best and will close betting a good 30 seconds prior to that game starting.

Anyway, here is a good article on the matter:

What i am sure of is that this bloke does not go to the trouble of hiding a transmitter inside his clothing to transmit results, maybe 5 seconds faster than the official, because the simple "publication" of that info just 5 seconds earlier is beneficial to his employer's business.
As the article says, its all about betting and tennis attracts huge turnover of "in the run" betting.
I personally dont know what he was doing, but I'll bet he was up to no good.

Just like cricket, somewhere in the world, they'll be betting on every point of a tennis match and there will be huge dollars involved.

true, diva but a 5 sec advantage is HUGE when you think about it.

no way it could be that long...

    :O

my point is Falcon....he's not doing it just so he can publish the info first.
he's obviously doing it because there's a monetary advantage in getting that info 5 seconds earlier.

Either ban point by point betting or pat the bloke on the back.

Don't bookies do what they do for monetary advantage, limiting amount you can bet to only win so much? Don't they stop betting well before the point starts? If they want the bets either have someone court side doing the same or hand it to the bloke who can read the points quicker than them and pay out on the bets you offer or don't offer them.

No manipulation of the game took place, all that was done was just reporting on what had just happened, so if some bloke can do it quicker than a bookie, them good on them.

He wasn't betting only relaying information ?

Don't believe the charges will stick

gee i'd love to know how much the bookies won on that....100k to win 14k are not uncommon in these matches.
  • tonytony    2,416 posts
I bet the bookies were praying that Nadal would not default.
