Shorty Dickenson another natural lightweight jockey I'm sure he could ride at the 46 48kg.Liked Bluey Lambie thought he was underrated. What about Ron Franklin ? I think from NZ he was a good hoop.

Ron franklin had a stroke pulling up @ asccot one day.ended his career was a very good rider trains a couple in east now think his young bloke app jock now

Other handy horses I recall were Red Storm , Spinola, Red Eye Special . Think Albert Jordan had Red Storm. Remember seeing Red Eye Special storm home at Belmont to win impressively 3 or 4 times in a row as a young horse. Not sure if he went on with it though.

know someone who recently saw George, you wouldn't recognize him they say

Joindre mentioned earlier was a big effort to win the WA Derby and then shortly after The Australian Derby . The great days at Ascot when race goers were 'spoilt' with a WA Derby and two or three weeks later The Australian Derby. Both races classic fought out events. They were not average Derbys they were all quality. Perth was the envy of the eastern seaboard and at one stage the Perth Cup was worth more than the Melbourne Cup. Hard to believe but true. Joindre I think started at a longer price in the Australian Derby after winning the WA derby. Tough 3yr old he was. No wonder Pike suited him and he suited Pike.

fait accompli, ken Bradley I think rode that cup winner when it exceeded the melb. cup.
why THEY stuffed up the carnival is beyond all of us.
boxing day was THE meeting of the year..its now consigned to a provincial.
the architects of that should be shot...with real bullets....

Won a few races Prince Alga ? Was a handy horse the win was no fluke from memory. Sanhedrins Pride red black and white colours ? Bit of a bulldog ? Hard horse to get past when on song I think. Brendon Leunigs' name mentioned. That's a name I had completely forgotten till now. How good a jockey was he ? He seemed to get his share of rides those days. But no idea of his record.

Sanhedrins coulors red black and white stripped sleeve red cap ran 4th in Australia & WA erby B leuing was a very talented apprentice won

some good races on je veuet echoes of spings ect weight got him earlier think he owns some with NDP
Echoes Of Spring was ridden by Grigsby and Sestich. Rex The Robber was a good horse for him

George would bring a E/S rider every 3 months, Peter Russo was probably the 1st, T Finger came over on his own bat, Pretty sure Watson came over on his own doing and the started riding for George. Bill Prain, Cuddihy, P Cook, G Hall all came over for very short stints some raging from 1 meeting to 1 month
  • Ridersonthestorm33Ridersonthestorm33    10,809 posts
Peter Russo was quite a good hoop ? Is that the Cuddihy from NSW ? Never knew he rode here or had forgotten. Only name I don't know there is Bill Prain does not ring a bell at all.
  • thefalconthefalcon    19,949 posts
peter cuddihy was a very good second rung jock. when I lived in Sydney he did a lot of riding for jack Denham when jack was training for stan fox.

getting back to perth, good appretices in the 60's...so dad tells me were max dobrigh and ron sibley.
disappeared off the radar....those were the days when they lived with the trainers..usually in the hay loft...a few hours off on sat. night to go to the flicks..and r**t a few sheilas, then back to the stable grind.
when their time was up...wow!! fast cars and faster blondes.......then the downhill slide.
    sad really.

Laurie rode Whispers of Spring which won the St Ledger for Bob Turrell

Apologies Spinner, missed the mention of Brosnan, at his best, few better. Checked Echoes of Spring's record....indeed it was Grigsby who won most of the races wth Laurie riding occasionally along with R.Kemp.

Remember following Bill Ransome as a jockey because according to my old man 'he tries on everything' . I was quite naive back then! But always recalled that and to me it meant I could put my 50 cents on with a little extra confidence.

John Wilson great association with the champ Meliador. Those clashes he had with Melbourne Cup winner Arwon etched in the memory forever. I think he beat Arwon home each time too culminating in a terrific Perth Cup victory. Paula Wagg was very good jockey too. In a lot tougher environment for female jockeys. She rode in the Powder Puff Derby races they use to run and dominated from memory.

Sadly Paula is best remembered for drawing the outside barrier on Black Gossip and being on the fence after 50mts. But she is a far better trainer

Ses rode Echoes Of Spring in his 1st run in a race, how they never got 12 months was unbelievable. Pretty sure he got hurt and Grizo got the gig.
