Geisel Park Stud has decided to downsize their breeding interests, and as a result, a number of quality broodmares will be offered for sale on Sunday September 6th at Belmont Park.

Nine of the mares being offered are empty, and subject to a Veterinary inspection for breeding, could be covered almost immediately.

They include Listed Jungle Dawn (1400M) winner, Calico Blue (2002) by Serheed. She won 12 times earning $397,890 along the way. Serheed mares have produced 16 stakes winners, including WA performers Mable Grace by Kendel Star, Ambers Halo by Don't Say Halo, Kim Classic by Encosta De Lago and Ma Chienne by Verglas. Her only live foal by Alfred Nobel, named Blues Shadow, hasn't trialled at this stage.

Parole(1997) by Jade Hunter, is the dam of Saint Bro (Flying Pegasus) he was the Listed winner of 3YO Fairetha Stakes in 2013 with earnings of $149,300. She has had nine foals, eight of those named, with seven having raced and six of those winners. Jade Hunter mares have been quite reasonable at stud with 26 stakes winners, most notably with multiple Gr 1 winners, Laisserfaire by Danehill and Keeninsky, by a Stravinsky stallion out of a Jade Hunter mare. Both of those sirelines are well represented in WA this season.

Unraced Femme D'Affaire(2000) by Woodman, the dam of Hannons Handicap winner Mr Vadim(Starcraft) is also offered empty. She has had eight foals, six of those named, with five of those winners. Woodman mares around the World have been responsible for 238 stakes winners, 38 of those at Gr 1 level from 2040 runners. Both Miss Finland and Miracles Of Life, were out of Woodman mares. They have wide appeal and definitely are proven.

Nine time winner Pillow Time(2004) by Danetime has just the one live yearling at this stage of her career. Danetime has six stakes winners as a damsire from 100 starters, all with different sirelines, so he seemingly has broad appeal.

Two time winner, Foo Foo The Snoo(2008) by Starcraft, is a young mare with just the one live foal, a yearling. Starcraft by Soviet Star, is a young broodmare sire, but Soviet Star was responsible for 46 stakes winners from 488 runners, with five of those at the highest level.

Karma Suture(2004) by Blackfriars, a four time winner, has had just two live foals, only one has lightly raced but it is already a winner. Blackfriars mares are relatively young, but have foaled two stakes winners so far including local filly Darlington Abbey by Stratum.

Unraced mare Lucky You(2007) by Canny Lad, has had just two live foals but neither have raced yet.Canny lad mares have been wonderful at stud, with 99 stakes winners from 890 runners, 15 of those were Gr 1 winners.

About Carla(2000) by Serheed has had five foals, two of those named, with one a winner. Serheed mares as mentioned earlier, have done very well locally with 16 stakes winners.

Unraced mare Merbla(1997) by Carry A Smile has had seven named foals, with two of those winners. Carry A Smile mares have had 6 stakes winners from 96 runners including the Gr 1 WA horse Rohan by Blackfriars.

I will have a look at the remaining 13 broodmares nominated for this sale that are in foal, in coming days.

Some of the Geisel Park Stud mares to be sold on Sept 6th that are in foal include:

Grey Cheval(2009) by Hussonet. A four time winner of over $233,000 is in foal for the first time, to Frost Giant (Giant's Causeway). There is not much evidence to go on in this mating, as stock from the Surtee line of Grey Cheval, hasn't been tried with this sireline. We haven't seen Frost giant stock race in WA at this point in time, so perhaps this is one to be taken on trust. Going forward, mares with Hussonet as their damsire, have produced 8 stakes winners, 2 of them Gr 1 from 229 runners. So it is a reasonable producing line of mares, with 3 of those stakes winners being from Danehill and Storm Cat line stallions each, and each of those did produce a Gr 1 winner.

Forest Flight(2001) by Forestry. She is in foal to Frost Giant (Giant's Causeway) which is a duplication of the Storm Cat line. Its fair to say that Giant's Causeway over Storm Cat mares, hasn't been the fastest of producers, with 3 stakes winners to date but at a slow rate. In Frost giant's damline, through Dance Number, he connects well with the damsire of Forest Flight in Diplomat Way. What would be a better mating choice would be to go to a AP Indy, Green Desert, Fappiano, Danehill or Mr Prospector line of stallion. Forest Flight being Storm Cat over Nashua as a line of mares, has been very strong producing 39 stakes winners with 6 of those Gr 1, from just a small pool of 152 runners. These are great numbers.

Four time winner, Lip Service(2001) by Marooned, the dam of Listed winner Express Service( by Danehill Express) has had her foal by War Chant, a breeding that clicks all the way through her damline with good numbers. Danzig over Mill Reef mares alone having accounted for some 482 stakes winners around the World. So in looking at options going forward, Mill Reef over Green Line Express has only ever produced Express Service but the sample pool is tiny at just 5 runners. So just looking at Marooned mares alone, 23 stakes winners have been bred from 138 runners, 3 of those Gr 1 and they were all WA bred horses. Miss Andretti, Special Harmony and Elite Belle. Famous Roman was also bred out of a Marooned mare. They work with Danehill line stallions particularly well, Oratorio at Mungrup has thrown some fast juveniles as well.

    More reports to follow.

Damien where you say the empty mares are subject to a veterinary examination for breeding purposes, do you mean the test will be carried out by giesal park prior or are you saying the buyer should have this done

Mares with be presented with a Certificate of Breeding if empty, declared in foal if that is the case but yearling stock will not be offered with x-rays due to time constraints.

Magic Millions will have books available at the door, the sale will go online shortly but again due to time constraints, books will not be mailed out in the usual fashion to buyers.

Damien seeing you seem to know the right people, here is another question for you, are the broodmares being sold with reserves

Recently the family decided to downsize their interests in the racing industry and the upcoming dispersal of all their breeding and yearling interests will see a tremendous line up of stock go under the hammer unreserved.

Those mares were Victorian based and were intended to go to Written Tycoon had they not been sold. No chance of them getting back here for this sale.

Lip Service had a War Chant Colt weighing in at 58kgs. She is the only mare to have foaled as of this morning. I will post a list of the yearlings in a few moments.

Reading on social media the thoughts of a guy who predicted the global financial crisis, who is cashing in at the moment. He believes the market is sliding into an abyss and better to get out now rather than wait until it is too late.

So perhaps with Eddie being so closely linked to the stock market, the position we were in back in January as you mention, was not what he finds himself in today ?

Whatever the case, it is what it is.

Mares with foals at foot get moved all the country every breeding season . Its not the first mare infoal sale and it won't be the last , they're an animal and lot tougher things happen in the wild and they thrive to pest proportions , obviously not ideal but no one knows the circumstances , could be health , marriage , getting things in check for retirement . Spudley you think you know the bloke through GOOGLE .
I'm sure the horses will travel better knowing you've gone through a box of Kleenex thinking about them

I have had around 5 parties talk to me regarding broodmares, but nobody on the yearlings. But someone else said they had more interest in the yearlings from their clients.

But the sale is unreserved, so they will all go.
  • colincolin    103 posts
Does unreserved really mean everything will go? It's a dodgy game at best this auction caper so you would think if something was "unders" by a long way it won't go to the real bidder.

Once a horse gets past around $300 it is real. Less than that and it may go elsewhere.I actually think they will do relatively well out of a couple of the broodmares, and the yearlings will mostly come down to those types that look at this early stage like they will turn into something. A smart operator would buy half a dozen of the yearlings in the hope that four would make the Feb sale for a quick pinhook.
  • DaleDale    1,346 posts
i am confused. is the sale on farm? and does MM have a sale this friday. As far as a pinhook is concerned, i agree. type is a plus.
