This just in ............

West Australian Racing
Believe it or not, they are still flogging this idea.

http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/western-australia/redevelopment-for-perths-belmont-racecourse-set-for-green-light/news-story/3c8a617dbbec9e8ba5e1b40fe95c6d1b

Tiny little problem with Main Roads though, they said no. They can't support further changes to the Graham Farmer Freeway.

"Funding to be finalised in coming months", I thought they had it all figured out ? Perhaps they are thinking the new Govt will rubber stamp the $66M ?

They must be disappointed in Saturday's event. Suggested to be the smallest Karrakatta Plate crowd for more than a century. All in perfect conditions, of course being held at a revamped Ascot facility further proving the 'if you build it they will come' strategy is completely false.

This story of course preceding the publicity on ABC Radio this morning in respect to Public Servant salaries, with Richard Burt, CEO of RWWA the highest paid in WA at $665,000.

All in all, some mixed messages for the WA Racing Industry to mull over this Monday afternoon.

at least they have changed the drawing and the over view centres on the footy stadium.

I hope it comes off, and i hope that the government listens to them...but i doubt any government will drop that sort of money on the table when we still have 2 facilities within 5km of the city. Ideal time for the government say we'll back you for 100mil, but we'll be shutting Ascot down as a Race Day facility and it'll be a training track only for 5 years, then sold off.

I'll go back down to the garden and sit in among all my fluttering friends!!!

Would be great if they can pull it off. I firmly believe that Belmont should be our prime metro racing facility given its location next to the cbd, Perth stadium and Crown. Excellent public transport access as well. Keep ascot as a training facility only and get rid of the excess land.

I just hope they don't forget the track. Needs the camber on the bend fixed

Just two months ago, this development was touted at $80M according to the attached article following an interview with the same person at Perth Racing.

So now he can lay claim to saving $14M !!!!

Agree Belmont has to be it.
But "build it and they will come", as in some big grand complex is just wrong.
People won't come, in those numbers. Those days are gone.
Save the dollars and just build a smaller boutique "stadium".
Make it something special, not something half empty / underused and mocked (which snowballs the problem).

In Sept 2015 this independent report, commissioned by RWWA, floated the idea that Belmont wasn't even needed. I guess that fit well with the Govt of the day.

Then in this response to a Perth Racing media release, dated 23rd March 2016, on the $74M redevelopment ( another guess ) RWWA well and truly sunk the boots into Perth Racing thinking they were capable of running not much more than a chook raffle.

And a prime one at that! the new stadium, Crown and a new look Belmont is just what WA needs... who knows I might even relocate to somewhere along Gt eastern hwy myself if they go ahead with the upgrade of Belmont  :D

I guess they are planning on installing lights for night racing. That first 'artist's impression' drawing would certainly suggest as much.

we have debated this over many years, re-develop Belmont, ditch ascot and vice versa. Lets just wait until they start developing Belmont and finish (key words being "start" and "finish"), race there for a season or 2 and make a call thereafter.

I wont believe its going ahead until I see the foundations coming out of the ground.

How about we just build statues to everyone involved, name races after them and bow and scrap for the rest of our eternal lives ?

Or we can call it as it is ?

A stupid idea that has sucked in a succession of people all without the intestinal fortitude to actually say it's a dumb idea that will not happen.

The decline is measurable and we haven't begun the flatline let alone the climb to recovery. This facility is not being built, not now, not in the foreseeable future.

It doesn't matter how many naive reporters get duped into writing such rubbish.

they only write what they are told, damo. the poor buggers would be punch drunk on the drivel they have been told over the years,

Anyone heard of GRD lately ? Do they still maintain a presence of any type in Perth?

banks making it impossible to do business. u need 60% pre sold before construction can begin if you're a developer.

If you are a buyer the bank has been supplied with risk reports showing apartments surrounding the city are a massive red flag so they wont finance you either, or if they do they want 30% deposit if not more.

I don't know much about developing and property but have RWWA and Perth Racing thought about approaching Packer about the development. Surely it would benefit him having a slice of developing the track with his casino just over the road. Or would the logistics of this be to complicated to even attempt?

Personally I don't think we need this in WA. How many meeting get cancelled each year because of wet weather?. Barley any.

The more attractive the development can be made in the eyes of the government the better in terms of getting this off the ground. The all surface track just adds unnecessary capital to the project.

I write to you in a drug endured state following a full knee replacement, so forgive me if I repeat something written elsewhere on vthis forum.

How much truth is there in the 10% reduction in starters this year ? It seems WA has shrunk by that for each of the last three seasons. The other number someone threw out was a 25% reduction in Owners. Has WAROA come out with these numbers based on active members?

    Would imagine so.
Figures would be available at push of a button / from their database.

An all weather bookmakers ring is required after the last few meetings with rain about. The amount of rubbish bins in the ring catching the water pouring from the ceiling is getting beyond a joke

since the new track manager has started... how many meetings have we lost? and the amount of rain we have received this winter seems to be more than ever.
I reckon the new bloke has a good handle on it.
they should stick to redeveloping the facilities before providing a new track.

below is for ascot and belmont only, including midweeks.
so despite them dumbing the joint down so much(or much more likely BECAUSE of it), this is what has happened.

Thanks @Carey those numbers make it very clear that WA cannot sustain the current decline, and if it continues for five years we will be a City of very few horses going around.
