MANDURAH ABANDONED

Harness & Greyhounds

Mandurah abandoned tonight without a race being run....Lighting issues I understand.

I really hope that WA Greyhounds weren't asleep at the wheel here, and that this was out of their control...  TABCORP seem hell-bent on crowding the nightly racing schedule with overseas meetings ( over 10 tonight ), and our local racing industry must fight tooth and nail not to be crowded out. "Own goals' don't help.

Disturbing news to say the least.

Should they be racing tonight then ?

More of a protest not so much about the current state of Cannington.

All 3 tracks have had issues but 3 weeks to fix a gate at Northam (2 meetings transferred) was the straw that broke the camels back.

FROM THE DESK... NOEL REILLY GreyhoundsWA CEO

Further to the ageing infrastructure issues that the Industry faces in the Avon, there is a level of disquiet that is
inconsistent with the outcomes being sought. Firstly WAGRA is financially, operationally and legally responsible, licensed
under the RWWA Act, to conduct racing at our three tracks including Northam.
The ongoing licensing requires a number of conditions to be met to ensure that racing is conducted in a safe and
prescribed manner. WAGRA has responsibility to ensure we meet our obligations, Northam should not be considered a
second class track when things go awry, they are just patched up as a solution that gets us by and no serious investment
is made to extend racing in the Avon.
Whatever opinions exist as to speed, construction, WAGRA competence, there will be no substitute implemented for
an engineered, warranty supported solution that will mitigate risk to staff, greyhounds and will ensure that a safe racing
environment is provided. Northam has, for too long, had band-aid solutions that get the season through and come back
    and bite in future years.
The team that built the track are to be commended for the endeavour of that time, the life cycle ageing of infrastructure
is now not predictable and simplistic solutions will not guarantee the longevity of racing.
Having capacity to race at Cannington, not available last year, ensures there is no lost opportunity for industry to earn.
Decisions to nominate or not are the province of individual trainers, WAGRA offers no opinion on the abandoned
    meeting of 1 May 2017.
The decision to repair versus the decision to replace is solely WARGA’s to make. The decision is based on the ideal to
ensure the longevity of racing in the Avon. As Industry is aware the ageing infrastructure has caused difficulty in the past,
generally WAGRA wears the pain, odium, innuendo and the cost to patch it up.
WAGRA will not repair the gate, there is a host of materials issues that ongoing welding will not guarantee. Professional
advice not opinion was sought. In presence of the Deputy Chief Steward and myself, the fabricator would not provide
other than a kerbside warranty on the repairs to get Easter Monday meet going. Replacement is the only course
of action. WAGRA could not advise RWWA it is ok to race in the next week in the knowledge that there is critical
infrastructure at known risk of failure. It is not Industry that would bear the liability, legal and financial, it is WAGRA.
On Easter Monday, I advised the WAGBOTA Committeeman that this was the course of action that WAGRA would be
taking and also advised that WAGRA would seek to extend the Northam season to offset the venue’s loss of meetings.
At this juncture, WAGRA will advise RWWA to have the race meeting of 8 May 2017 transferred to Cannington as a
    precaution.

Thanks for that.....The 'protest' by owners and trainers leading to the lack of nominations for Cannington May 1 may be for the right reasons, but the worry is that more territory is surrendered to the foreign invaders. Free kick TABCORP !

Not sure 1 WA meeting abandoned has much effect on an Eastern states wagering operator.
