East Coast RacingSouth Australia's vision switch
South Australian racing will be seen on Racing.com from the beginning of next season after the Racing Victoria-backed media outlet won the rights in a multi-million dollar deal. Like Victorian racing, Adelaide product, as people like call it in these deals, will still be shown on Sky racing one, but it will be showcased on racing.com.
It is another win of sorts for Andrew Catterall, who negotiated the Western Australian vision rights to Sky, before becoming Racing.com chief executive in December.
Racing.com is owned in partnership by Racing Victoria and Seven West Media and is riling against the status quo of Tabcorp-owned domination of racing vision. The belief is racing should own its own vision, rather than let another company make a profit from it.
Racing NSW has taken another direction, being paid for its vision while staying in partnership with the TAB, its key wagering outlet.
The question has to be which is the best model to get the greatest return to an industry driven by wagering. Both models have pros and cons but the situation is just another illustration of the divided nature of Australian racing.
