West On Janet looks a solid EW, even with the pay 1,2

Cisco I went to Olympic Park once , it was right on Melbourne city doorstep from memory. The late and great Bill Collins drew my mums name from a prize barrel. It was something decent too - we always thought later it must have been rigged haha was good publicity for Olympic Park greyhounds to say they had visitors from WA! Think may have been a dirt track way back then but not 100% sure was a lifetime ago.

Some fantastic memories Riders as a sixteen year old betting and having heaps of fun. Fortunately for me being tall I could get a bet on. The great part about it was if you followed what certain punters backed you normally would have a win!!

I would have loved to experience the era when on course bookmaking was at it's peak. The days of actually having to be on course if you wanted to bet on and watch races, I can imagine the atmosphere was fantastic.

Having only been following the Thoroughbreds and Greyhounds for around 4 years, I've only ever known the way it is today.

Jell I am 51 years old mate.

No jokes at Olympic Park Dogs on a Monday night the joint was packed. There were at least 40 win and about fifteen place/concession bookmakers and I always remember this guy with a folder who was a big punter. Mate his strike rate was amazing.

Same at Moonee Valley trots on a Saturday night - we were so spoilt.

Blokes such as bookielover would have many interesting stories.

    Cheers cisco

    Couple I like tonight:

R2 #1 Snow's Pledge EW - Drawn the cherry for the first time in a while and loves the rail.

R5 #7 Trickster Lumik PLACE - Rarely wins but loves placing and always at good odds. Will be last out but most of the field are mad railers and he likes it out wide so can run into a place.

Jesus Christ that was hard to watch with Lumik. Thank god I took FM pick as a saver to win

At its peak can recall about 8-10 bookies at Cannington...them and the tote would be doing a roaring trade. At one stage they were situated towards the catching pen area..not quite that far...as you came in the main gate from Station Street they were up to the right and well past the winning post.

Bookies fielded for the first time in December 1976 more than 12 months after Cannington opened.

There were 16 bookies that night 12 win only and four concession.

Many ex race and trot bookies and a number of new ones that went on to field at the equine codes.

At that time a bookmaker could only field at one code and that did not change until the late 1980s.

Yes that's right Chariots...I recall going to those early meetings...that number of bookies sounds correct for sure. Was talking about 8-10 bookies after the first initial peak. Sad to see but slowly over the years they dwindled away until the inevitable. Mores the shame - at worst a necessary evil haha.. at best made going to the track that much more of an enjoyable experience.

My first recollection as a kid was...gees box 1 does have an advantage! That was noticeable. The early meetings the bookies were up top overlooking the home straight...not sure why they shifted them down to the other area...but there was probably 8-10 down there at one stage.

Was fortunate enough to be at the Perth Cup 1998 when Rapid Journey won. He was one of the best dogs have seen. Think Reggiemite was placed in that Cup and then went on a winning streak himself and had some good clashes with Rapid Journey.

Rapid Journey was super strong and consistent.

All 3 of mine are racing at Northam today.

    R3 #6 Neo Ha Ha
    R4 #3 Roger's Dreamin'
    R9 #9 Cairnlea Lewis (into box 2)

I'll be having something the win on both Neo and Roger and a small EW on Lewis.

Neo and Roger are both winning chances, they trialled 15.94 and 16.00 respectively over 275m at Cannington, which is FFA time and these races don't look too hard, as usual they just need a clean start from tricky draws.

Lewis ran in FFA on Saturday night and ran last as we expected, I'm surprised he's running today but he must have pulled up well. Big drop in class for him but the distance is a tad short but he could steam home for a place and small possibility of winning if some others cop interference or bad luck.

Have they trialed at Northam @Jell ?
  • JellJell    1,201 posts
Not yet but John thinks they will handle the track no worries.

The fact they both ran those times over 275 means they're jumping a lot better then when they first arrived.

He expects Neo to win but Rogers not settled properly but he's drawn ok.

Can be tricky without a look.

    Good luck.
  • JellJell    1,201 posts

    Well that's a day I'd rather forget.

Both Neo and Roger checked and run places, if they don't cop interference they win.

Lewis jumps for the first time in ages and gets taken out and then nibbled at.

Got the box falc, just worried about the kennelmate in 2 crossing him early.

Could have done without the reserve getting a run

Paddy definitely the one to beat.
