  • Nothing to do with the Handicapping as I would have put it under that thread. Just mentioning it as its been bought up in discussions with horses leaving to the US

Talking about mixing the names - had a guy in my ear the other day in regards to SA jockey Jamie Kah - telling me how well he knew him, great bloke etc.

Just didn't have the heart to spoil his story.
As we know Jamie Kah is of the great female gender.

Talking about jockeys - did you read about 5-6 years Harry Redknapp the astute EPL Footballer manager - i think he started off at West Ham where he played - had a stint at Southhampton - and ended up at Tottenham where he did a fair job

When he was at Tottenham - he was out at the Casino - and a young bloke introduced himself as a certain apprentice jockey - but it wasnt him - and Redknapp was so dumb he got  conned for 3 years - see the lure of the punt they want the racing tips

The socalled apprentice jockey  ( who wasnt - he was just a council worker ) got free tickets to all the Tottenham games - one game he sat in the directors box next to Ambrovich - the billionaire who owns Chelsea

Redknapp wined and dined him in the best restaurants for 3 years - Harry said - th eapprentice the night before a race meeting would be tucking into the best steak and drinking the best wine - and he would say to him - how are you going to make the weight tomorrow - the apprentice would say - iwill get up at 5am and go for a run and run it out - youve just  got to laugh - 3 years he  got conned - how dumb can you be - but its the lure of those racing tips

From memory Indian Chant, Gap Road, Rite, Aladdin’s Lamp, Abenteur are 5 croweaters I can think of that FRK raced with success here in the 80s...he was on to a good thing there for a while.

Wow that's a blast from the past Saddle Tramp.

The Indian Chant today by War Chant out of Jestceny - just the one career run for Jestceny in 2006 at Ascot and won.
She's carried the bat and will always remain unbeaten.

Don't know if anybody recalls these three but collected about $600 from a $5 all up place bet one night at GP - Jamacian Rhumba, Paura Del Mar'e, Castle Prince.

Mike Reed drove Jamaican Rhumba ( was a drivers championship race ).
Paura Del Mar'e - Lyle Lindau and Castle Prince - C.Murphy.

Just checking the wallet - yep they got it all back!

Jamaican Rhumba and Caribbean Gambler were racing around GP & RR around the same time the West Indies were obliterating us annually in the cricket.

Almost certain Indian Chant was by Indian Lake and was bred by long time stable client Geof Ward (of Color Glo fame). Gap Road I know was by Even Break and hailed from NSW. Rite, Aladins Lamp and Abentuer all came from SA, the Norman family I believe bred all three of them. Ritual  (a brother to Rite) also have come over to Fred from the same stable. And not so sure but Graduate Boy came from the east, maybe SA or Vic.
Saddle Tramp definitely came over from Victoria.

Was working in a bank as a teller and somehow met Mike Reeds best half - think Sue was her name lovely lady - now what do recall is her nursing a little baby - that must have been Mark or Stephen.
Its crazy how fast the time goes.

Had the bank safe on Village Kid a few times - all good returned on the Monday haha. They were the times whereby week after week, month after month Village Kid would pay 55 cents a win and 55 cents a place on the fifty cent unit. Or $1.10 and $1.10 today.

Back then a 55 cent place dividend was almost guaranteed. Recall a bookmaker at GP investing very hard on Village Kid for a pace on the tote at the 1/10 or tens on.

It goes to show how the money has gone from trotting

I can remember one year ( might have been a yearly event ) they had a drivers invitational race - only local; WA Drivers - and the winning driver of the race won a brand new car - im pretty sure im thinking - that Lou Austin won it

After Village Kid kept winning and winning there were utterances from the the Tab - keep this up punters and we'll pay money back - but don't think it ever happened - always paid 55 cents both totes.
It was more common in NSW to see 52 cents a place - which is really now the $1.04.

Talking of bank safes - something just as good - didn't somebody back then find a tote terminal at GP in a bit of a remote location - got it operating and started placing bets - free of charge haha.

Chevy Chase was that a Roy Annear horse - or Retzlaff ? Think Annear and FR had Chevy ?
  • Ridersonthestorm33Ridersonthestorm33    10,809 posts
Unless I'm thinking of Speedy Cheval who Annear and Kersley had. Gold Rowan was another favourite.

Al Pacino was the Boof Anderson horse that he bought in NZ on the same trip that he found Village Kid. Went okay but no Village Kid, might have been a bit erratic as I recall or was that Rundales Crown?  Chevy Chase was definitely a Roy Annear owned/Jack Retzlaff trained and driven horse, I have a photo of him on my wall .....he engaged in a 2 horse war with Lady Be Cool at Richmond Raceway one night and he ran 2nd. Only a little fella, was a very good 2 year old but never really went on with it.Scott Glen was a Ray Sweetman bred horse out of a Tiara Court mare called Heather Court. She was a sister to Miss T Adios who was the dam of Scotlyn Ray. Bill Horn won quite a few races with Scott Glen around the time Village Kid was at his peak, with Hayden Fisher doing the driving.

Oh, and Speedy Cheval was mostly trained by Ross Olivieri...won the last ever race at Richmond Raceway with Phil Coulson driving but Peter Schrader was the primary driver in a lot of his wins.

Riders do remember the tote left open only can remember bits and pieces think it was a terminal that was only in operation on friday as a rule but a operator opened it for mon.or Tues and a patron was having afield day having a monkey on every runner until he started having a grand back in them days aphone call was made from tab to verify bets a grand and over that's what sunk him

Scott Glen was owned by Ted Greig...La Trice and Cardigan Bay fame. Ted moved back to his hometown Kalgoorlie later in life and put his nephew Wayne ( Chubby) Walker on Scott Glen to gift him his first win....in a stand and it was only a matter of him stepping. Somehow about 10 metres after the jump Chubby got involved in a squeeze and down he went. Chub decided he wasn't suited to driving and gave it away  L-)
Ted also got tipped out jogging Scott Glen out in the Kalgoorlie bush and got pretty badly hurt ......he sent him to Bill Horn while he recuperated and the rest is history. Pretty decent horse.
Castle Prince was trained at Byford by the then neighbour of Craig Murphy and all round nice guy and train driver John Trouchet. Many a good time held at the Trouchet residence with young harness racing nutcases of the time. Castle Prince ran a heap of metro placing but I think he never got over the line first in a Qualifying Stakes as they were at the time.

Yes that's what recall reading about the bandit tote operator - he upped the bets to over $500 and that was the threshold whereby the tab needed verification - so greed got him, as if kept below $500 could have got away with it a lot longer. It did make the daily newspapers at the time.

It was an unusual name Paura Del Mar'e wondered what it meant - can recall Lyle Lindau driving - he must have retired in the 1990's. Can recall another night Lindau drove it a treat and bolted in.
Castle Prince this night ran in the very last race - it was the last leg of the all up.
Had to get my dad to collect the ticket - thought how easy is this caper - wroooooong.
