VK 1980 First Semi Final East Perth went in as big underdogs against a classy Claremont side.
Steven Curtis think tagged Phil Krakouer and someone else ( either Wayne Otway or Greg Walsh possibly ) went to Jim Krakouer. Those two as we know could be dynamite and from 1982 went on to star at North Melbourne.

Royals got the job done and knocked the Tigers out of the race. Amazing win. Now in the Preliminary Final we took on the might of your Swan Districts team and East Perth did very well kicking 15 goals, only problem being that Swans kicked 28.

VK The Tigers were a team East Perth would often upset in the 80s. The grit and toughness of the Royals seemed to put the college boys off their game.( Was a college boy myself haha ).

Recall in possibly 1983 a game at Claremont Oval and East Perth had plenty of players out with injury ( already just an average team at there best ) and in today's odds Claremont would have been $1.02. The Royals were super desperate and put Claremont to the sword.

Stan Magro was at his vigorous best and recall one of the Royals players afterwards hinting, that some of the Claremont boys played the game over at the railway track. Meaning trying to get as far away as possible from Stan and a few others. The Irishman John Hayes one day kept outstanding full forward Warren Ralph goalless and definitely let Ralph know it! Yes loved beating those college boys. Peter Thorne was outstanding around that time for East Perth and finished up going to Claremont. Another top shelf player that left when EP were in dire financial trouble.

The likes of Thorne CL, Spencer SU & CL, Michalczyk WP, Kickett CL, McGuire PE, Hayes SF, Campbell SU, Allen SD, Quick SF & SU, Edwards SF, Arnold SF, Scott CL, Cocker SU, Nolan EF, Carpenter SU, Hawkins SU, Papotto PE, Delborello WP, R.Solin EF & SF, all left EP off the top of my head to go to other WAFL clubs in the 80s Riders, Curtis went to play for PA in the SAFL as well. Some did eventually come back to EP to finish their footy careers like Spencer, Allen, R.Solin & Scott.
Throw in those to the VFL such as Ironmonger, Bryant, Otway, Turner, Christian, Starcevich, Bartlett, Dennis, DaRui, Stephens etc and it was no surprise EP fell away from the mid 80s to early 90s.

Forgot John Scott went to Claremont VK, now he was one of the most improved footballers can remember, think he started off as a backman and finished up a brilliant uncanny forward for East Perth, got a feeling he had such a good season that he may have finished up in a State team. A remarkable transformation. Think he was number 49 or something unusual like that.

We did pick up one player in about 1984 and he was from the Perth Demons, think he only played the one season for EP and was a bit past his best - but quite liked him - he was one of the best kicks I've seen -very rarely missed and was a sharpshooter- Mercurial Murray Couper.

Paul Papotto and Angelo Del Borello a couple of real triers. Remember Richard Dennis think made his debut about 16, he was fearless. In fact if possible, almost too fearless. Think later may have played in a Premiership team at Carlton.

A couple of others who jumped ship from EP in the 80s were 1978 Premiership players Craig Earnshaw to SA, Brad Smith to EF, Alex Hamilton to SU & Wayne Duke to CL.

Yes remember Spanner at Subiaco in 1985...there was a game at East Fremantle Oval and that bugger David Rankin for the Sharks, tackled him and threw his helmet way over the fence.

Even though Don Langsford played in three successive Swans premiership teams 82,83,84, met him in about 2010 at his Pharmacy and he was a little bitter that Subiaco over ran Swans in the 1985 Prelim!

He reckoned it was a game they should have won, but did a few things wrong. Showed the competitive nature of the guy - three flags in a row - but lamenting an opportunity they missed.

VK I don't reckon there would have been any WAFL, SANFL, VFL or AFL team lose the players that EP lost in the late 70s and early to mid 80s.

It came home to roost in 85,86 and 87 when last or second last. Guts 'n determination could only go so far.

VK there was another great EP player went to Geelong and was a terrific full back - Garry Malarkey. Now in about the mid 80s he was keen to come home and finish his career at EP, asked for just a reasonable x amount of dollars - but fair dinkum unbelievably East Perth went cold on him.

Perth Demons then may have signed him up, but in the end don't think he came back and saw out his career in Victoria. Another great kick of the football coming out from the backline. Money may have been tight but he was a favourite son and should have been welcomed back to EP with open arms.

Think Steven Curtis was a plumber, had a few tin lids in tow as well - possibly East Perths most popular player - ton of courage - took on and tagged blokes like Robert Wiley and the Krakouers - he finished up wearing a helmet too.

Think he just wanted a little bit more money - it's a no brainer - you just pay him. But not EP the well was dry ( apparently hmmm ).

Port Adelaide offered him bundles and he was gone. Premiership player at Port and by all accounts an outstanding career in SA and may still be living there to this day.

Remember that Prelim Final well and Donny was right it was a game we really should have won but made some bad blues during the match including Sidey losing his temper to that Willet flog from Subiaco and thus we were overrun in the end by a Subi side who had been down for years and once they got a sniff we’re had to stop.
Don did eventually play in a 4th Premiership with the Mighty Black & Whites in 1990.

Yes it was a Subiaco house too - Swans looking to go into 4 Grand Finals in a row and Subiaco apart from showing some improvement in 1984, they had been the easybeats of the WAFL, there were times they were deplorable ( like the early years of Peel Thunder ). But in 1985 and 1986 they were superb.

When as a kid started to follow in 74, Subi and Swans were both grounded down the bottom rung of the ladder and for several years. Subiaco though were shocking and if things couldn't get any worse, they remarkably for a little while changed there jumper to a canary yellow and yellow socks. Goodness gracious me.

They had some good coaches too Subi, one was Brian Doogue a premiership player at Hawthorn.

Amazing stat from 1974 - East Fremantle a great team won the Premiership. East Perth missed the four. They met three times during the year and the Royals won all three. Ya wouldn't credit that.

VK there was one other player can remember that East Perth recruited..he was from Claremont a good indigenous footballer that always gave 100% and thought he was a real goer - Clayton Lewis.

Outside of Murray Couper, Stan Magro and Lewis can't really recall anyone else. But did get extremely good value from blokes like Thorne, Sheldon, Roberston, Stephens, Duke etc coming over from Victoria.

Can remember a few more Riders but not many and none that were stars blokes like Kerr SF, Wilson SD, Doyle PE, McTaggart WP, McNeill CL via StK, Dimmer SU, Hall SU, R.Solin SF, Dawson SU, Warner SU, Kelly SU who were handy although Dimmer did Captain EP and played for WA.

EP did recruit a few out of the old VFA for a while guys like Jamieson who later went to CL as did Hindson, Scrimshaw, T.Smith, O'Hurley, Kavanagh, McCormack, Wright, Wing etc probably a bit cheaper than the VFL maybe?

I thought there was a little blonde headed rover that East Perth recruited in the late 70's that had played a bit of footy for Perth and North Melbourne.

Yes John Dimmer of course. Very good player from Subiaco. Remember John Doyle from Perth. Gerard McNeil from Claremont coached East Perth, definetly coach in 1987 but not sure now how many years he was at the helm.

That bloke they got from Victoria in 1984 Sheldon he had a great year. Was gone the next! Think his first name was Ken, the same as the Carlton player and coach but no relation.

Scrimshaw might have played a few league games for Richmond, Kavanagh too. Remember Jamieson he was ok. Think that was Frank Wilson he was a trier and of course Robert Solin - 100% team player.

VK we've recalled just what a picturesque ground Perth Oval was, but as a kid walking some blocks to get to the oval it was a wake up call that all was not quite right in the world.

There were pockets of East Perth that had poverty beyond belief, living conditions unacceptable in any decent society. Certainly was an eye opener.

Things did change by the early to mid eighties but by goodness they needed to.

Just back to this season proper it looks like $ubiaco are montys again to go through the h&a season unbeaten or at the very worst lose a game.
As much as I cannot stand the alignment teams that mob are just as bad in the destruction of the WAFL in the last few years buying success year after year!

Did say to mate earlier in the week ' the Black Ducks are morals at home to knock off Peel' . I'm guessing too late to be on now. Honestly forgot all about it. Am not even sure what price the Bombo Valley boys were ?

Can't see South Fremantle being a threat now, if anything there possibly a little weaker than last season and if possible Subiaco are a little better.

Not sure what price Peel were mate but assuming it would have been $1.10 which is a luxury compared to what $ubiaco will be paying this week and most after.

VK you'd remember very good indigenous footballer Michael Cockie played for South Fremantle 1981-1985 but only the 59 games, that's surprising. Must have had some injuries. He could hit pretty hard too.

Another very good player at the club in that time...they had many, hard to believe how they didn't do better after about 82.

Worked with royals legend John McGuire for a few years... what a top bloke!

Top cricketer too was John McGuire Skids....probably the most unluckiest cricketer of all time not to get a game for WA in the Sheffield Shield as he scored a poultice of runs for Mt Lawley in WACA premier grade cricket.

Certainly was. He was ripped off big time by the racists that were running the WACA.

Spoke at length with him about it (drove many hours to and from remote communities together) and if you google John you'll find his story.

Yes i do remember Michael Cockie Riders a very talented footballer who's career was cut all too short.
Is the father of current Subiaco player and ex Eagle Adam Cockie.
SF had some amazing indigenous boys mate names the likes of Rioli, Michael, Cockie, Winmar, Roe, Collard, Kickett, Campbell, Matera etc as did SD & CL.

Just vaguely recall the controversy with John McGuire not playing in the Shield team. So he didn't play any one dayers either ? Can remember him playing in some trial games they had.

There was a guy at South Perth cricket club Bob Buckland he took huge amounts of wickets in A grade and couldn't break in.

WA were very strong back then I think too. In the batting Bruce Laird would have been around then ? Robbie Langer ? Ric Charlesworth ? Plus several more, but can recall my parents saying he must be close to getting a game and should.

Think Claremont might come out this week and show a bit and knock the Sharks off. Big things expected of the Tigers last season and didn't deliver.

Good to see Jonathon Griffen back at his true club - East Fremantle. He's a Shark through and through. Taking a bloke like that away from EF to Peel a joke. One bloke at EF seen several times but he's had some bad injuries but is a real good footballer - Jamie McNamara.

Just back to this season proper it looks like $ubiaco are montys again to go through the h&a season unbeaten or at the very worst lose a game.

Yesterday, after trailing by 11 points at Q/T, they kicked 18 of the last 19 goals to beat Swan Districts by 96 points at Leederville Oval, to be the only undefeated side left after three rounds.

    LADDER
    1 Subiaco 3-0 254%
    2 Swan Districts 2-1 87%
3 Peel Dockers 1-1 100% (play Perth today)
    4 East Freo 1-2 95%
    5 Claremont 1-1 92%
6 West Perth 1-1 78% (play South Freo today)
    7 East Perth Eagles 1-1 75%
    8 Perth 0-2 73% (play Peel today)

It's pretty rare for only one side to have a percentage over 100%. Also, I can't remember the last time 7 sides (3rd thru to last) were on the same wins after three rounds (although three have had byes).

The % is the true indication of the WAFL at the moment Paul $ubiaco are head and shoulders above the pack the only chance of them being knocked off is if a Peel (Fremantle) or East Perth (West Coast) make the GF with a plethora of AFL listed players to take it up to them.
