Since i am a Victorian, and love a long range roughie, and this topic has not been opened. I am having a stab at TE AKAU CALIBURN  at $126 .Hence its not guaranteed a start As 76th in entry, but as we know, things change quickly!  Gate is not helping this Saturday in Bart Cummings, but if dosnt get caught wide look out, may sneak into final field  *-:)

If this guy arrives in good shape, and preferably get some rain, with the sting out of the track Cross Counter is the biggest certainty to go back to back since the Brisbane Lions!

Ok so as this is a rolling and continuing Melbourne Cup thread, here are the races to be run today in regards to the Melbourne Cup:

    G1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m SWP):

Horses who are nominated for the Caulfield Cup - if they win the Turnbull then they are guaranteed a start in the Caulfield Cup (but not Melbourne Cup) and can not receive a weight penalty for the Caulfield Cup or Melbourne Cup.

Fact: The last horse to win the Turnbull Stakes and Melbourne Cup double was Makybe Diva in 2005.

G3 The Bart Cummings (2520m HCP):

The winner of this race....you are straight into the Melbourne Cup and are guaranteed a start in the big race. Also the winner of The Bart Cummings can be liable for a weight penalty for the Melbourne Cup (and Caulfield Cup), at the discretion of Racing Victoria Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter.

Fact: The last horse to win The Bart Cummings and Melbourne Cup double was Almandin in 2016. Before Almandin was Brew in 2000 when the race was known as the "Japan Trophy Race"

G1 Metropolitan (2400m HCP): The winner of this race can be liable for a weight penalty for both the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup.

Fact: The last horse to do the Metropolitan and Melbourne Cup double was McDougal in 1959.

I had two bets on Surprise Baby:

    1st bet in May: 81-1

    2nd bet in July: 26-1

So glad. Now he needs to win

So a horse I have been following since March this year - Surprise Baby...has won the Group 3 Bart Cummings at 2520m at Flemington. The winner of this race is guaranteed a start in the Melbourne Cup. He carried 57kg today and won by 1.5 lengths. Now we all wait and see what sort of weight penalty (if any) Racing Victoria Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter will decide Surprise Baby gets if necessary. As a comparison, Almandin won by the same margin (1.5 lengths) in the 2016 Bart Cummings (55kg) and did not receive a weight penalty for the Melbourne Cup..So he stayed on 52kg. Surprise Baby currently has 52.5kg in the Melbourne Cup.

Interesting race on Saturday in terms of the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. The Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes - a race that has been a handy guide for the two Cups.

The winner can't receive a weight penalty for the Caulfield Cup, plus is guaranteed a start in the Caulfield Cup and is exempt from the Caulfield Cup order of entry/ballot.

However the winner can be liable for a penalty for the Melbourne Cup at the handicappers discretion.

Horses that have been nominated and their weight:

    Yucatan (59kg)

    Raheen House (57.5kg)

    Prince Of Arran (57.5kg)

    Steel Prince (57kg)

    Glory Days (56.5kg)

    Haky (56.5kg)

    True Self (56kg)

    Ventura Storm (56kg)

    Sweet Thomas (55kg)

    The Chosen One (54kg)

    Sully (54kg)

    Super Titus (54kg)

    Self Sense (54kg)

    Qafila (54kg)

    Wall Of Fire (53kg)

    Hang Man (53kg)

    Lord Fandango (53kg)

    Exemplar (53kg)

Today, Racing Victoria Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter advised that The Chosen One has been penalised 0.5kg for the Melbourne Cup for his win in the Herbert Power Stakes on Saturday, thus taking his Melbourne Cup weight to 52kg. He could not receive a penalty for the Caulfield Cup and will carry 52kg. The last horse to do the Herbert Power/Caulfield Cup double was Master O'Reilly in 2007. Before that was Beer Street in 1970. Boom Time ran 4th in the 2017 Herbert Power and won the Caulfield Cup.

The last horse to do the Herbert Power/Melbourne Cup double was Rogan Josh in 1999 and before that was Arwon in 1978. Prince Of Penzance ran 8th in the Herbert Power in 2015 and won the Melbourne Cup whilst in 2014 Protectionist ran 4th in the Herbert Power and went on to win the Melbourne Cup.

@PC Master O'Reilly was a 10-1 shot in the HP before even money fav Maldivian was scratched at the start after rearing in the stalls and cutting his head on a piece of tv equipment....who could ever forget that drama!?!

Maldivian then went on to win the cox plate the year after. And i think the barber up at belmont Sam may have been a part owner wit J.Ricciardo

Master O'Reilly upon winning the Caulfield Cup, had become the new sub in the Quaddie - however not on all totes, was very little between the two faves....huge quaddie pool's too.

On one tote, either Supertab or NSW Master O'Reilly ran favourite, so if had the late scratchings of Maldivian and Eskiomo Queen, then still alive, but the other tote, if on them then not so good.

Just can't think of the other horse's name that was vying for favouritism with Master O'Reilly.

Riders ran a check it would've been maybe better or douro valley, it was roughly 10/1 the field with Maldivian out he was 2.40----eskimo queen was 10s when she was scratched. the other three master o'reilly was 9/1 .-10/1 maybe better 10/1 douro valley 12/1

Just been trying to locate it stg, was quite a story, and the difference in quaddie dividends was massive - the successful one with Maldivian hot fave and EskimoQueen/ paid bugger all with all that money going onto Master OReilly and in comparison to the quaddie where Master O Reilly wasn't fave.

Some punters very heated about it.

Did see that Master O' Reilly paid $5.20 on Supertab for the win, and Froggy Newitt was on Eskimo Queen.

It was Eskimo Queen. I was All In market at a big price and she was $4. Maldivian scratched I was jumping for joy, then karma kicked in a minite later when they said she was also out

But Bomber what we are trying to work out, who was the horse that ran fave on the tote in either NSW or Victoria that caused the lopsided quaddie dividends.

Hot fave Maldivian scratched and Eskimo Queen, but winner Master O Reilly only runs favourite on one of the big totes....on either Supertab or NSW did not run fave - so all tickets with Maldivian and Eskimo Queen were successful on one quaddie, but in the other state were all losers because O'Reilly didn't run fave on their tote.

A hunch tells me in NSW Master O'Reilly ran fave on the tote, but surprisingly on Supertab ( Victoria WA etc ) he didn't, and yet pretty sure he ran bookmakers fave on track too.

The difference in quaddie dividends was astronomical - Master O Reilly had good support but add the Madivian and Eskimo Queen money he was running odds on in the Quaddie.

Whereas the other one had either Duoro Valley or Maybe Better favourite, and that divvy was big.

Could've been Spinking...one thing might be able to find is Supertab and NSW Quaddie dividends 2007 Caulfield Cup day, it's a striking difference because one sub successful and on the other unsuccessful.

Maldivian was about a 6/4 fave - that's one hell of a lot of quaddie investment either going onto Master O Reilly or not.
  • savethegamesavethegame    1,368 posts
eskimo queen when she came out, there would have been another quaddie sub?, see gatting out of cox plate
  • Ridersonthestorm33Ridersonthestorm33    9,420 posts
Yes of course stg, but Maldivian being scratched was the big one and on one tote Master O Reilly did NOT run fave.

Buggered if can find it yet, but did see two WA horse's ran in the 2007 Caulfield Cup - Scenic Shot and Black Tom.

David Hayes had Black Tom for a time, had forgotten that!

Cinque Cento ran last for Peter Moody and Scott Seamer, their was a period around the time Ethereal won both Cups that Seamer rode winner after winner.

Princess Coup 3rd. Not the strongest Caulfied Cup ever, but as they say..."ever tried to win one?"

What also surprised was Danny O'Brien trained the quinella. Definitely his day.
