Late scratchings and deductions

West Australian Racing
Campese ran 28 lengths last at Northam on Thursday, pulled up sore and is required to trial before racing again. The horse is also nommed for Saturday and is $4 everywhere. None of the corps have turned it out, no doubt so they can claim the maximum deduction when the horse is scratched on Friday.

There were several horses dual nommed this week who were left in the markets for some time after they had run including She's A Sweet Deal - left in a Northam maiden for 7 hours after winning at Belmont on Wednesday, eventually resulting in a 36c deduction, and Convalesce who raced on Wednesday but wasn't scratched from its  Northam race until Thursday morning.

Surely the stewards can step in to require horses to be scratched as soon as possible.  Fair enough waiting until they have raced, just in case their first nommed race is washed out, but they should be scratched or withdrawn by the stewards immediately after that.

I'm not referring to hoses who have a legitimate chance of backing up, but once it's clear a horse cannot run in the subsequent race it should be scratched.

If you bet before scratching time, you are betting in to big percentages with the threat of deductions as well.
I don't see any need to have a horse scratched early. As long as it is before the official deadline, it should be fine.
The exception being She's A Sweet Deel who should have been scratched (by stewards if necessary) as soon as correct weight went through after it won at Belmont which of course made it ineligible for the maiden at Northam the next day.

No thanks. I'd like to get rid of early fixed odds betting though. Lazy bookmakers lay things early for a pittance and the market gets sorted for them with very little liability. By the time the race comes around most of the overs have disappeared  :(
It also ruins quaddies as everyone knows the prices beforehand. It used to be fun trying to predict where the value would be in the later legs of the quaddy. Now those later legs have already been punted on for days :(
