Interdominion 2021

Harness & Greyhounds
Being an ardent traditionalist, time to try and crank up interest in the Inters which start next week at Menangle. Obvious suspects King Of Swing and Max delight ranked 1 and 2. When old San Carlo (foaled in 2010) is ranked 14th on the latest list after just 2 starts in the last 16 months for an 11th, and a last start 2nd earning $1500 at Kilmore rating 2.00.9, then I think you get the idea that it isn't the series it once was.

TAB Touch on the pace with their market...as usual.....why they have bothered to put up a market is a mystery. They still have Self Assured as 3rd favourite....it was scratched ages ago. Max delight ranked 2 is at $21, The Black Prince ranked 4 is at $41 and Father Bob ranked 5 is at $81 along with San Carlo. Total joke, actually an insult to Harness Racing.
Expensive Ego is second favourite at 4.20....seems very short even though he won a 4 horse McArthy  trial at Menangle over 2300m (beating King Of Swing). Final is over 3000m which might sort a few out.

I backed King of Swing back on 2 October. Still feeling quite comfortable.

TABtouch have finally up dated their market, Self Assured removed but fellow scratching Amazing Dream still in the market at $21. Rumoured that someone has actually bought this outfit?
  • freodockersfreodockers    2,667 posts
Well if they have JayJay there would be plenty of room for improvement. A good buy even if they paid overs.

Tabtouch have updated again.....the entire market has disappeared now, nothing.

Don’t ask me why but NSW of late seems to lack Energy / Enthusiasm in regards to last
couple of Inters held there .
Gives a feeling of manufactured interest .
  • JayJayJayJay    7,628 posts
The last ones held there were from 2013 to 2015 and they were the "non traditional" format (heat held in each state) and just the final at Menangle, a format that went down about as well as a bad curry.

Its a far cry from the heady days of Inters (and Miracle Mile's) held at Sydney's Harold Park 30+ years ago.
I still cannot for the life of me see one positive to have come for the sport from the move to Menangle from Harold Park, other than a few did very well out of the real estate side of it!

The market is back up minus Amazing Dream. Getting there, getting there, can't rush these things on a day when we lose a test captain. Where's Bob Simpson when you need him?

One can’t deny it 800m tracks forcing the issue in the high grade races .
G.P Inters H.P Inters probably the most entertaining as a spectacle.

Excuse my ignorance but where the heck did that crowd come from? Was there a special promotion? Free tickets from a liquor outlet?

Italian Fireworks Night. Always attracts  a huge crowd with Italian food stalls and fireworks after the last race when the horses have safely departed.

Great shame they can't attract that type of crowd normally. I recall there more attendees at Tuesday Trial Nights in the good old days rather than attend normal nights these days.
  • JayJayJayJay    7,628 posts
Fold up the picnic blankets, stack up the garden furniture and take away the esky's and kids prams and it is a very modest crowd. Kids with adults free entry, so it is more of a carnival crowd on the lawns that a race meeting. Number of paying customers at $20? Who knows? Maybe 500? Restaurants are apparently all fully booked, don't know the numbers, maybe 800 at a guess?
Do the attendees bet or buy food or drink? Only internal on course figures would show that and I doubt they will see the light of day.
But for all that, it gets people on course, it creates atmosphere, it may get some return business, it certainly creates a good "look" for management to hang their hat on and maybe having the Minister present on course has a benefit or two. Or maybe not, maybe he leaves thinking wow, what a great night, the industry is in good shape, no need for me to do anything, the joint is running like clockwork? So yes, keep having those promo's for sure but start promoting the racing as well. There were some excellent contests Friday night, the paid 5 horse trial aside......try getting a 5 horse field of non 2 year olds to stand up at an outer country track? So promote the racing and the stars. I think the alignment of the Pacing Cup to fit in with Chinese New Year is a terrible call.

Jay Jay I don’t know how it corresponds to traditional date/s and how it would affect both the
horse & the trainers programme for his / her steed .
But I think the date has been continuously changed over the last decade ?
Having a big crowd is a winner even if tickets are free the community in general including
Chinese heritage Australians will enjoy & appreciate the venue & the spectacle of Harness
and from my own observations love a bet get the Casino going again $100 max bets get 4
Bookies up running better odds than fixed TAB Odds hell have the horses names in Chinese
Adjacent to the English Spelling make an effort it would be appreciated by them .
A Good Time & Good Experience make an impression even if GP will have there
attendance once a year it’ll be a good revenue raiser and better still just a good night
for a Family on Friday .
Nov - Feb should have 1 theme night a Month Families would love it with Free Entry.

Next event is New years Eve....book tickets online for $35 plus a booking fee ($40 at the gate), kids 12 -17 $20 plus fee or $25 at the gate, under 12's free. So Free entry probably not on for Chinese New Year I would imagine. I think the fireworks are very expensive and not sure it is a bottom line profit certainty even though they are popular for families. My point on the Cup was that it should stand alone as a feature event properly promoted on January 1, return the Freo Cup to a standing start 2900m race in mid February as it used to be, and put some Freo back into the Freo Cup. It is a lazy option to just bung on a cracker night and make it all look good.

I totally agree that both cups should be stand alone on their own merit.
Unfortunately the last 2-3 years Both Cups have been Lame Excuses for Crowd Numbers.
It’s Sad to see the Codes 2 biggest races have crowds only slightly bigger than a normal
    Friday Summer programme..
I just think anything is better than what’s been happening the last couple of years.

Freo cup back to a stand and bring back the pacing cup heats leading up to the final,a lot of my friends that don’t real follow racing wouldn’t know about these two races unless I invite them for a beer the advertising needs to step up a notch and I can tell you right now as soon as you make families pay at the gate they won’t be going.

Disappointing that Emergencies are drawn in the field which can lead to horses drawn inside back line being forced to outside front line. Much better system when emergencies are not included in draw and take the place of scratched horses without disrupting the make up of the field.

Re read the conditions and horses will move down the track but back line horses will remain on back line.

Nice pipe opener by the King, must admit i'm a massive fan of this fantastic pacer haven't had a series bet(had him in some multis tonite for a near certain booster leg).i have just a little query on him at the 3000m of the final?
  • ThunderstruckThunderstruck    7,676 posts
Not much interest to date? 2 of the 3 heats tonite were crackers(they dawdled by comparison in the middle heat not worth more mention).

Heat 1 Expensive Ego maybe gained a slight advantage as in he smashed the track record and zoomed home his last quarter mile in 26.3 won easily, whilst in heat 3 the King would not be denied getting up in the last stride also in slick time but 0.8 slower than EE.
Cracking race the last heat, Boncel Benjamin the leader and runner up was handle bars down and stuck on like the proverbial beaten just a head, must be tracking the right way to make the final

Haven't checked an up to date market or the points table as at the end of round 2 but Max Delight might want to be winning his next heat or finishing top 2 though a 4th and 3rd placing is probably still ok..

Looking forward to Round 3 at Newcastle Saturday night.

Both Expensive Ego and King went ridiculous. Three wide the first 400 in crazy splits, both of them, EE kept out there for longer and jogged in......King breezes and grinds it out but they are on a different cloud those two. Expensive Ego looks like the best pacer in the world.

Bloody good to watch wasn't it JJ, do you think KOS is a little better when he leads? Not so easy over the shorter trip and gate 8 tonight.

I got the feeling advantage Ego too he was arrogant and though I don't follow closely I'm just a little suss of the King at the 3000m of the final? what about EE?

Great watching it was.....The first round of heats raised a flag for me on the King.....his ears were laid back in the run to the line (albeit in blistering time) whereas Ego cruised in. Bit the same tonight but gee, a brave thought go against the champ. Ego is a 4yo but on the old dates is actually a 5 year old and may be at his peak, looks the faster of the two but the King is a proven warrior. I think the 3000m will suit King Of Swing. I was not terribly interested in the series early days but it is shaping as "heavyweight contest for the ages. Don't think anything else can beat them but another round of heats and the barrier draw for the final may add a few spanners. Certainly combative racing tonight at Bathurst and good camera angles.

No clash between King Of Swing and Expensive Ego in the heats, they kept them apart. Tonight, well probably the King more impressive (on times alone) but he didn't pull any gear on Ego in the run home. Barrier draw to determine favourite but the King very seasoned horse. 2 horse race one would think.
