At least Labuschagne and Smith will be tucked up in their beds tonight comfortable in the knowledge that they do not have to endure a spray from Justin Langer for their inept batting displays in both innings of the first test.

JL will be too busy on the phone congratulating Khawaja on his brilliant batting thus far. Or not.

The last time i followed Test Cricket - The Ashes - was way back - mid 70s

Deciding Test  at Leeds - Headingly - Aust were 4 down at Stumps - needed about  another 200 on final day - Walters who was an absolute total failure in England was about 25 not out (  dropped twice already )

So it was set up for a great finish - but vandals overnight poured oil into the pitch and the game was abandoned - then the World Series circus came in - and i gave it away -

Well tonight should be a good time to pick it up again.

Was bloody outstanding indeed.Thought they were goneski after Carey who was bog average anyway got out.
Pat Cummins to the rescue you bloody beauty.

Special mention to "Gary" Nathan Lyon who held up the other end and also for an extraordinary lofted drive for 4 over mid on, fairly smoked it under huge pressure.

This sums up the last day quite well. Looking forward to the British press tearing into the team now and questioning the captain and coach (although Bairstow is already in the crosshairs). No doubt wheel out some former players to bang on about having a "hard edge" and "fundamentals of cricket". Just like our press did when we were 2 nil down in India and the "bring back JL" garbage ramped up.

Poetic Justice that the winning runs were scored by Cummins off "Ollie the Wally".

Thought Aussies were very lucky to win.
Dug themselves into a hole trying to play safe cricket then Carey gets out and Cummins has no option but to take them on with Aust 50 runs short.
Cummins made the runs but if it wasn’t for some true Aussie grit by Lyon to hang around England win.

It's strikes me as odd to requestest a road when your opposition love a flat deck as opposed to normal swing friendly England conditions, your two premium fast bowlers require zimmer frames, your spin Bowler has been retired for 2, your alrounder is a cripple yet you want conditions that are going to see them bowl more than they normally would just so you can score quickly easily???

I thought "Bazz ball" would have wanted somewhat difficult conditions to bat yet you still score quickly as opposed to hanging around for one with your name on it.

Just seems a tough way to start out a 5 game series over a short time frame.

I hope the Aussies can win 5-0 to shut some of these Cult like figures from the UK up a bit and I like Bazz! Just the way this has been spoken about has gone bananas.

Game 2 and we're ticking over nicely again, second dig and at 2/220 effectively with hopefully 2 full days to go.
Also think their around 50 overs behind with time lost so this match will have a result if the weather holds up.

2 zip would be outstanding after 2 tests, the pommies will turn it up when their chances look forlorn.
Lyon a big loss but Head chipped in with 2 and Starc whilst expensive is a wicker taker, he played a big part in rolling them for 325 yesty.

Cricket - what an absolute Cheats game

What happened to Bairstow - that is Kindergarten stuff - and to be fair Bairstow has tried the same tactic

This is where Kerry Packer is badly missed - when he had the World Series Cricket - if anyone tried that childish nonsense - hed read the riot act to them - and hed knock it instantly on the head

Seriously Marko I cannot cop your post.
Bairstow clearly walks out of his crease. Why you would do that is beyond belief!! Has any other player done this before? What about when they bowled 98% short balls to us in the second innings instead of at the stumps.
With reference to the Starc catch, the replay shows the ball hitting the ground therefore it is not out.

    Utter bulldust

Ian Chappel used to do that all the time - a little bit of gardening - tap his bat on the pitch - also alter his gloves etc - and the reason he said he did that was to relax between deliveries

Both teams are like the 4-5 year old kids up at the local kindertgarten playing marbels

If you can justify getting someone out in that fashion - and both teams are doing it - what a pathetic  game

Warner does the same thing but he doesn't waltz down the wicket out of his crease.
  • spinkingspinking    3,874 posts
Exactly Cisco. My comment was in regards to you saying what about 98% short balls as if there was something about that not being in the spirit of the game. I think i actually heard Ponting saying something about there being the most hits to the glove forearm and shoulder than any test so far . May be mistaken though it was getting late for a Sunday

From someone who watches 0 cricket these days but

Regarding the run out. The ball is bowled and goes through to the keeper. While it isnt a dead ball once this happens, I thought the act of the batsman lining his crease across the stumps before he leaves indicated "safe" and now leaving to do a bit of pitch repair. I thought this was a thing?

I just don't like constant short pitch bowling to tail enders. Surely on a good length and at the stumps is the place to bowl. I always got more satisfaction knocking the pegs over than getting someone caught in the deep. We certainly missed Lyon!!!

With reference to the Starc catch the rule below describes a catch.

    ICC – June 2023
33.2.2.1 the ball is held in the hand or hands of a fielder, even if the hand holding the ball is touching the ground, or is hugged to the body, or lodges in the external protective equipment worn by a fielder, or lodges accidentally in a fielder’s clothing.

Thanks Chariots. I have seen wickets where keepers have caught the ball in their pad!! No argument from me but the Starc replay shows the ball hitting the ground.

So, change the rule. Rules are rules. It's out and I have absolutely no issue with it. From someone who has played a lot of cricket. I know what "In the spirit of the game" is.
If Carey had held the ball up and waited and then done that. Then I would have had a problem with it. But he didnt, he did it all in one motion from collecting the ball from the delivery to having the shot at the stumps. It was just arrogance from Bairstow
You are correct Bomber; it is a thing that you can walk out of your crease and "Do some gardening" but you should always look back at the keeper, acknowledge he has thrown the ball to slip or point and then move forward out of your crease.

With the catch, England can't get on their high horse about in the "Spirit of the game" and then not walk on that catch. That was as clean a catch as you will ever see. he had total control of the ball and then braced for impact. There would have been hundreds of catches taken over the years just like that. But the rules state that it was grounded so he was given not out.

What you just  posted their - sums up why Cricket - once a great game - has become a shocking game - win at all cost

As i kid i played under 12s cricket Sat morning - and if the w/keeper kid did that ( which he wouldnt)  and appealed - there is no way  known  the umpire ( one of the parents ) would  give the batsmen out - where here to  play a proper game - in the right spirit

You and Cisco seem like absolute parochial one eyed Aust supporters - so what ever is to their benefit - however it happens - then all good

As the point re short pitch bowling - i can remember the late Bob Willis - and he hadnt bowled those type of deliveries at tailenders - he got a barrage of short pitch balls when he was batting - and one hit him - and in disgust he tossed his bat to cover point

I try to look at it fairly - not this one eyed fanatical nonsense

Maybe the Aust Cricket Board should send Darrell Hair over their to sort things out - oh i forgot hes in jail for stealing offences
