Also, I think the mindset for a lot of people (not necessarily on here) has to change now in regards to disregarding a horse who is having their second (or more) attempt at winning the Melbourne Cup. One of the processes of elimination was to not back a horse who was having another attempt at winning the race if they didn't win the previous year. In recent times - it's changed...
Horses to win the Melbourne Cup at their second + attempt - Since 2000:
2000
1st: Brew (finished 10th in 1999)
2013
1st: Fiorente (finished 2nd in 2012)
2020
Twilight Payment (finished 11th in 2019)
2021
1st: Verry Elleegant (finished 7th in 2020)
2023
1st: Without A Fight (finished 13th in 2022)
She made Britt and Michelle Payne look like giants!

John Marshall was born in WA. His father Jack Marshall won a Bunbury Cup. Sadly for Jack he was killed in a race fall.
John moved east when he was around 15 years old I think? John also rode in Hong Kong and Japan too.
Just shows that our WA jockeys can more than hold thier own on the national stage and international stage too.
* John Marshall won 27
* John Miller won 7
* Damien Oliver won 4
