I have not been a buyer for five years. It's difficult to buy a single horse for a single race, absurd idea actually. You can target particular breeds and sires known for middle distance in the hope that you get a strong miler but it is not that straight forward.

In respect to this race, it has turned into a visiting horse target for those that are not good enough to win a Gr 1 over here.

Of course. Why would you travel all that way to run in a handicap when there are plenty of richer races at home?
There is a risk in travelling to a hot place with firm tracks especially for a backmarker. The Railway is a massive target for the locals but not so much for visitors. There's nothing wrong with that. The WFA and set weight races are the ones where you can get a decent horse across. Usually the ones sick of getting beaten by the champions. Still top horses but not elite.

Hopefully this is just a part of the eb and flow of racing and it kicks back up a year in the future.

It is also a bit of the way of the G1 handicap at the moment-Sir Rupert Clarke G1 at Caulfield last week did not contain a previous G1 winner, at least we have Tuvalu who has won a Toorak.

Probably not relevant but perhaps it is also a sign of Bob's drop off locally. In the past, he has always had one or two promising types heading into the mix, especially targeting the Kingston Town / Northerly.

As Gilga may have implied, there are plenty of group 1 races in name only.

Far too many G1s in NSW and VIC now. The fact that we now use terms like "genuine Group 1" tells you that it has gone to pot. It either is a G1 or it is not.

From my understanding racing administrators will be happy if the Railway loses its Group 1 status. They want the Group 1 to be the Goldrush.
Very hard to swallow from traditionalists.

A couple more amendments to tomorrows program if temperatures stay the same as forecasted.
Did the Railway used to be run on Boxing Day? Or was it always later November?

As I recall Boxing Day was the Derby and Karrakatta while the Railway was generally on the Saturday between Christmas and New Year

What was the Goldrush as a race formerly named ?

For there to be talk of The Railway losing it's Gr 1 status is essentially an endorsement of my comment that it is becoming downgraded by the entries of Gr 3 and Gr 2 horses from the East being the profile of horse considered capable of winning.

tony, you're spot on. boxing day was traditionally the biggest day of the year. now n.y. day is spent at some track in the wheatbelt, effing idiots. i think what it came down to is the refusal to pay extra public holiday wages to bar staff etc. if you notice a few public holiday fixtures previously at a metro track are now consigned to the bush.

i think the goldrush is a newey..i stand corrected.

What a dumb comment.  That is because it is a handicap.  Look at the last few years fields for the Epsom, Toorak or Doncaster.  They are always full of group 2 and 3 horses that are capable of winning it.  Very rare a genuine group 1 horse wins these with say 59kg.  Genuine group 1 horse often win them but usually before they are established as genuine group 1 horses.

Do You expect Alligator Blood to come here and run in the railway with 62kg?

Are we not missing a trick by having some night racing? Obviously not currently set up for it but during these hot summer months could have the potential for a twilight or night meeting.

Accuweather has Ascot forecast top 36deg at 11.00am. Down to 33deg by 2pm. Is that where we are at these days?

It was 35 about ten minutes ago at the airport (close to track) I guess now it depends when the "doctor" comes in to see if it goes up further into the afternoon or drops fast around lunchtime

Currently 36.8 but with low humidity the apparent temp is only 33.4
