WA Racing Hall Of Fame Awards Night

Harness & Greyhounds
JayJayJayJay    7,916 posts
With the awards evening slated for August 17th at the Westin Hotel (as per the RWWA Press release advising of the 4 thoroughbred nominees), still no word on who the Harness or Greyhound nominees are......with the event only 3 weeks away.

The newly revamped RWWA/Racing WA website appears have to dropped it's previous tab to the Hall Of Fame (or at least I can't find it).....and Warren and I need to order our dinner suits, bow ties and top hats and prepare our acceptance speeches so as not to disappoint our throng of fans.

Hi Rocket, what makes you think they dont have a sense of humour. They are in the Trot Game... Thats having a sense of humour..

A once great industry destroyed by poor leadership, poor integrity, poor handicapping and to many grifters.

Haha Sonny, you are so right, you certainly do need a sense of humour nowadays, probably always needed one..

Sadly, those that ridicule us old blokes have absolutely no idea.... none, zero, zilch.....of how great the Industry once was, totally clueless. It got its hooks into me pretty early in the 1960's and it has never let go.

And we, despite it being an extremely feint shadow of what it once was, a minuscule slither of the past, we don't want it to let go.

It is like those of us fortunate enough to have experienced WAFL footy when it was a way of life.....ride your shabby old bike to the Welshpool station, catch a train to Claisebrooke, run to the Lord Street Entrance, pay your sixpence for entry and a budget, and run up the hill to get a good spot to watch Polly Farmer take on Jack Clarke, autograph book in the back pocket. You couldn't wait for next Saturday to come around. And save  all your flannel about progress and things changing. You reckon we are not aware of that? That is just trotted out as a feeble put down  and a justification of massive industry mismanagement. Does anyone seriously think the AFL is a superior product to what it once was? If so, go whistle dixie and wait for the echo.

And that was what going to the trots was all about. You couldn't wait to squeeze in on the lawns or the betting ring, or the stabling area,  it was THE main event, it was what we lived for. And now it isn't. And we have to put up with all these pastel suited grifters and imposters telling us "what a great nights racing it was" or whatever other cliches they trot out. They wouldn't know a great nights racing if it slapped them in the face.

And now it isn't, by comparison it is awful, a soulless, patronless, snoozefest, abandoned by punters and not within a light year
if what it once was. And it is in it's death throes. I hear old Tom
Groves will not be renewing his license this year, and in all
seriousness, who is going to replace him? No one, that is the answer and
management could not give a toss as the industry continues to shrink
into oblivion. What a contribution Tom and his family have made over the
years, unbelievable but there will be no recognition, he will just ride
off into the sunset, like all of us.

Anyway, they can keep chucking their pies, denigrate our horses, question our sanity, serve up ageist comments, keep doing their worst because it makes absolutely no difference to us or the current reality. The industry is nose diving, we know it, everybody knows it...but we had a good time, we enjoyed the very best of it all, they will never ever know how good it was, so all of their commentary is water off a ducks back. We'll keep doing what we do until boot hill beckons and if it aggravates some of the toffs allegedly running the sport, even better.

The fiasco surrounding the Hall Of Fame Awards night, with no sign of the Harness or Greyhound nominees, if in fact there are going to be any, with the event just 3 weeks away says everything about the failed organisation that RWAA has become in a nutshell. The thoroughbred nominations were announced 6 weeks ago.....so all three codes are being promoted and treated equally as per the Boards Charter? I think not. Still, nothing for Minister Papalia to see here, sail on Captain.

You would think Tom Groves for his contribution to the harness industry ,would be a special presentation race in his name at G.P.

Tom Groves ---- W T Groves write up's in sixties had him as Bill, The freak Mount Eden's first win Sept 69. Tom Groves won a double with horse called Good Friday on that night, he used to be a rocker like Lyle Lindau. Remember handy horse called Farmer Elect head going up& down every stride, Tommy rocking thought they were attached by strings

Funny thing can't remember Mount Edens win but remember trophy presentation.of Mabouhay that night
    has stuck forever.

Just out of interest re The WA Trotting Hall of Fame ( got no interest in the other 2 codes ) , but who is/are allready been admitted to that Hall of Fame

FWIW , on the car radio driving home , listened to that show on ABC Radio , Conversations , its on each day at 11am  , runs for an hour , 1st half of an hour is worth a listen , Bruce McAveney , got quite a Trotting background , when calling the Trots he use to have a card for each horse , and write down its finishing position etc , Said he was  a big punter too big a punter in relation to his salary up until his mid 30s , and affected his family situation whether he won or lost

2nd half hour , all about the Olympics etc which i didnt have much interest in to be honest

    This link should work Marko.

I always though Bruce was an excellent race caller, precise and clear and a good listen. I have always thought his infatuation with mindless guff and statistics about how many times player "X" had been shopping at Big W ruined his footy calling.

That link , its a very good write up about Trevor Warwick who i rated the best ever

Lincoln Storm 37 wins , i would have guessed high 20s , one of my real favourite horses , so honest and strong , it just didnt know what the words give up meant

He won the drivers and trainers WA Premiership a few times each , but he was runners up in both a hell of alot more times , and that would be definitely to FRK

It said they moved to Fremantle , i allways thought Warwick in his heyday when he had his big stable  that he was based at Forrestdale

Yes,  Merredin to Fremantle to Forrestdale to Byford via the USA.

Old Bill worked in the Railways at Merredin, neighbors were the McAulay boys, Ken "Noddy" McAulay a champ with East Perth. Then to Fremantle next door to Gil Starkie.

The big stable was in Forrestdale (Nicholson Road) with Tindale supplying a conga line of dozens of "Lombo" two year olds.

Has recently given up on the Driving Master Duties.

Still absolutely nothing from RWWA on the Hall Of Fame nominations with just 17 days to go.

Just to be on the safe side, I have booked my dinner suit and limousine and have requested a spot on the top table to provide interesting topics of conversation for the GPHRC entourage.

There are quite a few that I could pick on the way up .....and none of them would be administrators who get gigs purely for doing the job they get paid to do. As a general rule of thumb with a select few notable exceptions (James Brennan for example), my view is that the Hall Of Fame is for Horses and Participants (Breeders, Trainers, Jockeys/Drivers).

With just 17 days until award night, it would seem the only nominees this year are from the Racing Code. If that is the case, it is a disgrace and if it isn't and there are to be some last minute announcements on both Harness and Greyhound nominations, it is a management debacle worthy of Ministerial Intervention.

As mention previously a Parliamentary Inquiry a must into Harness Racing surely the Racing Minister with his finger on the pulse would be all over it.

Morning JayJay, Just a update on seating availability for the Hall of Fame sorry to inform you the GP Owners Association haven't anything available plus your not a member. The grifters tables are full( three of them) so at this stage don't hire a suit.

I have done some research on this and RWWA no longer conducts a three code combined Hall of Fame event.

The inductees are now presented at the Annual Awards Night for each code. Hence to Thoroughbred inductees have been announced for presentation on August 17th.

I understand that the Harness Awards night will be held in March and the inductees for the Hall of Fame will be announced prior to that function.

Thank you for the clarification, I must have missed the  release that informed us about the change. They did call for nominations for all 3 codes simultaneously, so it was probably not outrageous to think they would have the Awards at the same time, or at least the same year.

Damn, may have to arrange another fitting for the monkey suit..
