    The Howard Porter hey

Might have been the late Curmudgeons old boss , and the owner of San Simeon

Testing my memory here a bit but it was along time ago , but his race colours might have been not dissimilar to Trevor Warwicks colours , in the brown/white combination perhaps

Early 80s , Lou Austin might have left the camp , and H Porters private trainer was viewed as a plum job ( might not have turned out that way because he might have scaled back a fair bit ) and i was their on a Monday night meeting pro punting , those twilight meetings , and the new private trainer for Porter drove a winner , was it Colin Brown , Colin Olsen or Colin someone . And the other thing i can remember about that meeting , sitting in that stand not far from the winning post , and there was a youngish/tallish bookmaker , very polite and well spoken , and he was picking my brain , because the dual licenses had just come in , and he was trying to get up to speed on the Trots

Think Howard Porter long out of it by the time San Simeon came along and Milson Lodge was established. Brothers Ron and Lyle Porter.

Colours were brown with a blue star. Sequence of trainers (I'm pretty sure were Teddy Breese for a while in the late 60's (around the time of Fortress, think that was the last horse Ron drove), then Rod Starkie took over for a long time, then Lou Austin and Ian Grieg after him but only for a shortish period of time. After that, I would have to look it up.

I think the trots ring was over subscribed, so any budding pencillers had to start out at Cannington....I think that was the case.

At that time it was almost impossible to get a license at the trots so I gained one of the initial Greyhound licenses and transitioned to the trots three months later. No dual licenses in thse days.

Thought that was the case Chariots. I think Brownie took over from Ian Grieg but I think it was winding down at that stage? Milson Lodge was sold off for housing.

November 14th, 1974 for horses handicapped 2.28 and better at Pinjarra. Winning driver E.T Breeze. Official flucs 20/1 into 5/2

Headstrong but fast chestnut horse by Playbill from Baruch. Bred by the legendary Buick Car Dealer of Ashburton, Clarrie Rhodes.

The events of that day, and beyond, are well documented in my filing cabinet. Haven't heard him referred to as "The Prince" for a while. Was indeed a "Golden Time".

Quiz night question: Who was his registered trainer for his last race win at GP?

No, lost the $494, then had just the one start in the next year, a 2.28 fr and better at Northam on July 24, 1976, some 20 months later for FRK. No 20/1 on offer that night but first prize just $430.

Then at Cunderdin September 22 starting a run of 6 more wins in a row,  before a change of trainer on December 10th 1976 winning a 2.20 metro stake at GP for Phillip Charles, beating Hands Turn and Ash Duke. Won just the on race at Northam the next year and then had his last win as an 8 year old  in a GP Metro November 15 1978, for trainer Gordon Plewright, PC did the steering to advance him to a 2.18 front and that was all she wrote. Goodbye to one on the prettiest daisy cutter pacers I ever saw.
