When a footy player is getting older, is not as good as he was and starts making big mistakes, it seems that it's ok to suggest they should hang up the boots. We've all done that.
Why should it be different for racecallers?
  • DamienWyerDamienWyer    7,767 posts
Anyone would think this is his first mistake. It's laughable.

The race got more publicity from the call than the result.

Twilight of his career hey Alan ? Total **** blackout more likely.

his workload has to be addressed. i recall a few months ago, he called sat. then kal. on sunday THEN gerro on mon.
that is unfair and they do not seem to be grooming a takeover in 5 years time.

Workload he is asked to do, or requests ?   Being an old Kal resident, I know the local callers were always moved aside at round time & think they still are. Is it necessary ?

Overall & I am a critic at times (with accuracy of placings) but he is and has been a great asset to WA racing. If Stewie had not hit a brick wall, probably would have been lost to WA to the East or overseas many years ago.

yeah i was good mates with stewie, i think i bought him one of his last packs of rothmans...
his daughter is very happily married to steve parnham.

Not sure if responding to my post, but to clarify, what I was saying if Stewie had kept calling, then DM would have been in waiting as No. 2, and probably would have headed to the East or overseas.

exactly muldoon, i think stewie was maybe better than my old man...... :-\"

Ok the reality is Darren is still lengths in front of the other callers here so until one jumps out as a real good caller he has the job as long as he likes.

I think Matty Young should be approached to do more Race calling on the gallops. Richie Bell is not the answer. Matt has called races in the north and IMO hasn't missed a beat.
And listening to him call the trots is very entertaining.
He is the future and should be given more opportunities. Dmac has had an outstanding career. and will go down as one of the greats. But he has struggled in the last few years, and it is time to start looking for his replacement.
Im not trying to bag him here. But when was the last caller to call a Group 1 winner wrong in Australia.
    :-??

Racecallers have rarely called the wrong horse winning in any event let alone a Group One. I recall the hardest race for callers in Oz was those international jockey races when jockeys wore the colours of their country. I also recall a Victorian caller stuffing up a race at Bunbury as guest caller and he was near on crying behind the grandstand after the race.

Jum I don't mind Richie Bell.

You talk about Daz Mac's workload but I thought he had a business (racecallers) who he contracted to the TAB and if that is the case he would dictate the hours for the week to various callers.

Daz could retire with the money he has made promoting Amelia Park during and after races and anytime he can.  ;))

But my beef .---Especially if Peter Walsh & Amelia Park,--- Frank & Joise Fiori, ---,-Bob &Sandra Peters----- Ello &Jackie Galante are his favourite owners , if they win a race after the sugar-coat at the line ,& your listening to the radio for
who has ran 3rd& 4th sure does get a few of them wrong .

Racing Radio had a phone in competition yesterday asking for Darren's greatest calls.

Just a touch of 'Dear Leader' growing about this.

Racing Radio only likes to hear good news from committed party members. Members of it's Politburo receive unflinching support. Try ringing in with critical appraisal and see if you get a look in. 1000/1 and drifting.

I thought it was just people doing work at the stables or out on the farm that listened to Racing Radio. I haven't tuned in an eternity

Dazza, made sure he wasnt going to call the wrong horse this time.only called the winner Overpass and mentioned 2 horses Lady Laguna and Hot Zed once each for entire length of the straight and until a 100 metres after the line..
    Best to be safe.

Hard job can’t blame him for small mistakes. But in a momentary lapse of reason did call Wind and the lion . Wind and the storm just before the corner

No not at all. Two entirely different words shizzle and chisel and the error has been repeated more than once.

yes indeed. you try running thru a field of gallopers and thinking "pharque i must say shizzle or that blue boy will be on my tail".
doesn't happen...btw what is a "shizzle" we all know what a chisel is.....
  • thefalconthefalcon    20,230 posts
^^ just checked with mr. google...shizzle is an euphemism for the word "****". only came about in 1997 in the writings of a s. jaffe..good old irish name :)

now we know why darren uses chisel....they could have called it "hot shizzle"...
    :))

Just declare him the greatest ever and if you say it enough, people will believe you.

Can I ask a question that keeps coming up from certain sections of the Industry. Who controls which race caller goes where? Do some Clubs actually have to pay for a race caller?

If either or both are correct, why is this not a function of RWWA as for instance the supply of Stewards to meetings?

Is there a career path in WA for next generation race callers? Does RWWA have any forward planning in this regard?
