i happened on an interview with the mrc ceo, john kanga about caulfield. the question of lights came up, the ceo said no way and mentioned it would cost 3 million.
now in the big picture 3mio seems a reasonable amount. with our sunshine solar panels could keep costs down.
another thought, drop $500,000 from those 4 $1.5m races....most of it goes over east anyway. there's 2 mio to start with.
thoughts?

I agree with Kanga. Never going to happen. Unless u are in NSW, racing administrators couldnt organise a root in a brothel with a suitcase full of cash

I've said it before but in Perth we cannot get a crowd on a perfect autumn or spring day, so why on earth would people head to Ascot/Belmont at 5.00-5.30pm for 8 races. It sounds like a good idea and I'd turn up but who else would ? Would tote turnover help ? I'd doubt it as in the E/S its already 8pm or later. Some Asian countries bet with us yeah sure but is it worth it ? Number one reason racing has been killed off is TECHNOLOGY as it's just too easy to sit at home bet on the computer and watch the races on your TV or PC, it's just a change we don't want to accept. Back to the thought of night racing what will happen is we'll get 5k on the first night and 3k on the 2nd night and then we'll be struggling to get 1000 on any other night as the novelty will have worn off

For summer and at Belmont only and I reckon there would be more people at night than daytime.

It would be cooler in temperature at night and also a lot of people work during the day on Saturday now so it would allow them to go. Also Perth nightlife is pretty lame so it would go hand in hand with the casino and Optus stadium close by.

I remember going to Wednesday races at Canterbury and it was packed. Fast forward 30 years and Friday night racing at Canterbury draws bugger all people in comparison.
Back in the day you had to attend in order to get betting flucs. Once that became available off course, the writing was on the wall.

Pretty much what I said before, once the novelty wears OFF after about 3 or 4 meetings there be nobody going. I also went to canterbury probably around 2005 and crowd was OK went again last year and lucky to have a few hundred there. A lot of people calling for night meetings don't even go in the daytime (once who carry on to me) and think it solves all of racings problems. Geez last week we couldn't even decide where to put the rail, if we have night racing will anybody know where the power switch is to turn on the lights ?

ATA meeting yesterday, got sent a photo of the winner and connections, Grantham, CJP etc. There would not have been 10 people on the background in either the stands or the lawn, pretty much deserted, much like GP (at night) on a Tuesday midweek. Take away a few connections and no body to talk to.

The members and level 1 had slightly more than a normal midweek, but it's the way of the world with small crowds at average race meetings

In summer with a three hour time difference, the turnover from the Eastern States would be very little.

Night racing is for the east coast only.

It’ll never be a WA thing. We could race to 6:30 between December and March every year, to get the after work crowd in for the last 2-3 races on the way home.

On the east coast it opens up the Hong Kong/Asian punters. If WA goes to full under lights racing we open up ???? What markets??

It was a good idea 10-15 years ago. Maybe even 20 years ago. But i struggle to see why we’d do it now. Betting habits have changed, as has our revenue streams. On track punting is now a novelty activity for the events crowd.

Exactly as I said above, times have changed and night racing may work for a month or two for on course patrons then it's goodnight 100% correct RIO
