THEY ONCE RACED HERE

West Australian Racing
To be aired on Racing.Com on Sky this week. A terrific topic.

Thinking locally I would say Helena Vale, Goodwood and Canning Park which were all before my time. Any info on them would be appreciated.

Beverley racetrack is one that I do recall (Muros). Toodyay not quite as one meeting a year. There are probably a few tracks up North that have gone by the wayside. Wyndham?

On the subject of racetracks why did Lark Hill never become a recognised race meeting track. Wasn't that the plan moons ago?

I was holidaying on the Gold Coast as a young fella around 1980 when I saw a race meeting on tv called "farewell to The Creek". It was the last gallop meeting at Albion Park, nicknamed "The Creek".
That's purely from memory. Apologies if it's off the mark.

Helena Vale was track work &  trials till 1981 , Beverly Racecourse was approx. 1990 .
Work boy won the Beverly cup, it was the last race of the last meeting.

My two great memories from Beverley and I attended plenty of meetings there were Muros a future great Perth and Adelaide Cup runner and Belinda's Star who was deliberately hoisted off the track on the corner (would have won by lengths)..I won't name the jockey...Finished second and then three days later won a major race at Ascot at long odds.

Since Rodent brought up Trots I attended a meeting at Harold Park during the death throes of the track

I didn't bring up trots. Albion Park had a thoroughbred gallops track nicknamed The Creek. Nothing to do with Albion Park trots.
It was sad to lose Harold Park greyhounds and even sadder to lose Harold Park trots. I would go to HP occasionally but once they moved to Menangle, I never went to the trots again.

I just looked it up. Albion Park racecourse was a sand track and the last meeting was December 30th 1981 and was broadcast on tv. That fits with me being on school holidays.
It made way for construction of the trot and greyhound track of today.

I didn't start following WA racing until 1988. Exmouth I'm sure was still in the recent form of some horses so I'm guessing it must have still been going in the late 80s.
edit: Racing and Sports shows the last meeting at Exmouth being 11/9/1999
Also shows Adam Durrant rode 8 winners there.

Well worth watching the series. First two tracks in episode 1 are Woodend and Newstead which closed in 1968.

There is also a series of books.

It was 50 years ago but as I recall Belinda's Star ran in a maiden or graduation in town after the Beverley run. She won that at 50/1 then won the Prince of Wales (wfa) at her next start, also at 50/1.

Not quite how I recall it but I am not going to say you are incorrect Ngawyni

Maidens on a Saturday back then I doubt it but grad a possibility. I just thought it went straight from Beverley to the major race win. Also starting to wonder if it finished second or unplaced at Bev. Second I still think.

The one thing that's always stuck in my mind is that she won at 50/1 2 runs (possibly even 2 weeks) in a row with the second win being the POW. I also don't recall there being Saturday maidens then and probably wouldn't have started 50/1 in a maiden, so more likely a grad.

Won a Graduation after Peter Nelson had a shocker at Beverly ( 3rd or 4th)....come out and blew them away the following week in the Prince Of Wales I think....Trained by Peter Watson .

You are on the right track so to speak.

Jockey did not have a shocker but rather an intention. As I explained earlier it was dragged off the course on the turn otherwise it would have won by many lengths. Wins at Ascot 3 days later.

Yes the trainer was Peter Watson and the jockey was not Peter but John Nelson

I was at the track that day.

Throwing up Belinda's Star name there's a chance someone may remember a mare early eighties that had top of small bone removed from both back legs rather then pin it, I seem to think it may been Every Ready, Bryan Hilbert vet done the work, it never stopped her, My Vet mate says wrong horse, any clues it was a mare and a good one.
