ZIPPING GOING FOR FOUR STRAIGHT
The Lloyd Williams-owned warhorse Zipping will be in familiar territory on Saturday at Betfair Park if he takes his place in the 2010 Sandown Classic over 2400 metres.
When nominations closed at 12 noon today, Zipping was one of 15 nominations for the $351,000 feature race at Group 2 level which concludes the metropolitan component of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Zipping, who finished fourth in last Tuesday's Melbourne Cup at his most recent outing, has won the past three editions of the Sandown Classic.
Now a nine-year-old, Zipping continues to perform admirably at the highest level. This campaign, the tough stayer by Danehill has won the Turnbull Stakes (2000m), run second in the Cox Plate (2040m) behind champion horse So You Think and then finished fourth in the Melbourne Cup (3200m), five lengths behind winner Americain.
Among his 15 career wins, Zipping has also won the Australian Cup (2000m) in March this year and the Moonee Valley Cup in October 2006.
Zipping won his first Sandown Classic in 2007 with Steven Arnold in the saddle. He returned a year later following a third placing in the Turnbull Stakes and a second placing in the Cox Plate of 2008. On this occasion, he was ridden by Michael Rodd.
Then, without another win to his name in the next 12 months, Zipping conquered Betfair Park's showpiece race for the third consecutive year, again partnered by Rodd.
Only one other horse has won the race on consecutive occasions - Second Wind in 1930-31.
Among the list of nominations for the Spring finale are 2010 Mornington and Adelaide Cups winner Capecover, 2009 VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume, last year's Sandown Guineas victor Kidnapped and international contenders such as Illustrious Blue, Eastern Aria and Manighar who finished 7th in Tuesday's Melbourne Cup.
Once known as the Sandown Cup, the Sandown Classic is a weight-for-age event over 2400 metres. The name and conditions of the race were changed in 1999 and Aerosmith, trained by Peter Hurdle won the first running of the
re-vamped race.
In 2010, the Sandown Cup name returns to the programme for Betfair Park's biggest race day but with a different identity.
The Rokk Ebony Sandown Cup, a handicap over 3200m and carrying prize money of $125,000 has attracted 26 nominations and among them are Zipping's stable-mates Mourayan (also nominated for the Sandown Classic) and Muir.
Importantly, whilst not guaranteeing a start, the winner of Saturday's reincarnation of the Sandown Cup will pass the first elimination clause for the 2011 BMW Caulfield Cup and the 2011 Melbourne Cup.
Peter Snowden and Lee Freedman will be aiming to achieve a perfect score for leviathan owner Darley and Sheikh Mohammed in the Group 2 Betfair Sandown Guineas with nominations Chasse and Territory respectively.
The powerful operation has won the past two editions of the Betfair Sandown Guineas with two short-priced favourites in Caymans ($3.20) in 2008 and Kidnapped ($1.80) in 2009 both with Darley's number one Australian rider aboard, Kerrin McEvoy.
Caymans was the first runner for Darley in the Sandown Guineas following their purchase of the Ingham racing empire in March 2008.
Saturday's nine-race programme features eight at black-type level.
